Mr. Lincoln, we have a problem, your meter is in backwards…
The person on the telephone kind of blew me away. I asked her to tell me what she was saying three times and then questioned her more yet.

We get calls from folk wanting to give us free estimates for new or better windows. There are calls about our driveway and house siding. Even more calls about sales and offers of the latest and best cruise to the Caribbean.

But this call was very different.

“Mr. Lincoln it appears that when they replaced your water meter last year, it was installed backwards.  As we have been testing it remotely it appears that it is subtracting rather than adding the amount of water that you are using.  The account is in the negative” said the young lady on the telephone.

My mouth kind of dropped open, “You’re kidding right?” I replied.  To which she assured me that she was not.

We arranged for a water meter reversal to take place on Thursday morning.  Sometime between 10 AM and 12 PM a technician/plumber will come and do surgery on our water meter.

For those that don’t live in our area – the new water meters here have an electronic feature that the city is able to read the meter remotely.

Peterborough has never had water meters and it is a new adventure for us to billed for our water usage.  All the places that we have lived in have all had water meters.  This is going back to the old way for us. And it is a new revenue source for this city.

So having a meter that takes back the amount of water that we use – or doesn’t read correctly… the poor city would not be able to pay for our large Mayor’s salary.  Or is that our Mayor’s salary?

It is a first.  I post it today to let other folk in our city know what has happened as well. I would love to hear from you if the City of Peterborough is not getting enough money from you – and your meter is in backwards.

I am still scratching my head on this one.
