Today’s Blog Post
Wooieee – a Long Census Form and no Threat of Jail Term

I am just a dumb Canadian! I know that better now. I do not understand. What is all the fluff about with the Census thing? They have had this intrusive questionnaire for years and we have always tried to answer it honestly.

Actually it was my wife that did the answering as she was home when the Census Takers came to the door and she answered on “our” behalf.

It was during one of those times when they asked my wife what she did for work… my wife answered “Domestic Engineer” – meaning housewife – stay at home mom – someone that does all the things that keeps the home and family together.

The kind lady doing the Long Census snapped, “We cannot put that down!”

So my wife had been under threat of three months in Jail if she refused to answer… and if she gave what she thought was good answer… she was not allowed to say it that way. Kind of stupid – don’t you think?

If you do not live in our marvelous land you will not know that the Government has ordered that the Long Census Questionnaire be scrapped and that a shorter less intrusive one be used possibly… and that the threat of 3 months of jail for not answering be removed.

The Liberal Part of course saw the opportunity and screamed all kinds of stuff to say the Government was not fit to Govern… and that the dirty rotten Conservatives should be gone for changing things!

I get tired of it all – don’t you?

I am tired of being threatened on every side. The G8 and G20 were not in my life, but with the actions and reactions and the Billions of Dollars spent on this two months ago… getting rid of a Long Census Form and taking away jail terms… seems… well… a little non-plus.

I work in jails and with men in prisons. It is crowded there. There is not enough room as it is… let alone making more room for more stupid Canadians that would have to housed and fed by the Government for three months. Maybe they will use the cells in Toronto to take care of the “bad Census people”.

But then the Conservative Government just passed some legislation that will potentially keep people in Prison longer.

The only right thing is to get rid of a silly rule that would potentially put more stupid people in jail. I think they finally realized that the last and most recent law that was acted upon… is going to fill up the jug… and they haven’t got room now.

Brenda and Winston, friends of ours, described their stay at a Bed and Breakfast recently. It was nice. All their needs were taken care of… and the only problem that I could see was that they would have liked to stay longer.

B & W – if you can, refuse the compulsory Census… and they will give you three months in a B&B – at the government’s expense.

The article I just read stated that the Government is willing to give in a little – by stopping the threat of jail… no words will be used that way… so people are not frightened and don’t react with a negative vote… but they still will be sent to jail if they do not cooperate. At least that appears to be what the compromise is about.

I am looking forward to cutting my costs a little. I figure Jail is a good idea. It will save us buckets of dollars when we are housed by the state.

But remember I am a stupid Canadian. And stupid Canadians elect people that make rules for them to follow… stupid rules that keep us stupider… I think that is a word.

So I pray for my leaders. I try to pray honestly and openly for each one… but there are days that nothing quite makes sense. And this just happens to be one of those days.

Now the weird question that pops into my head… what if I answer wrong on the questions? What if I give them a misleading answer? What if I say something completely off the wall? How will all that wrong answering affect the outcome?

This will be fun.

Today’s Blog Post
Three Cheers for Saskatchewan!

That’s right – Saskatchewan is Number One!

Just this week they announced that the Province is going to host and fund a study of the new method of treating symptoms of MS. Now people in BC are pushing on their Government to make sure they get in on the act!

The procedure now known as "liberation therapy", where a procedure is done on the veins leading from the brain to the return to the heart, is changing people’s lives all over the world.

From all the reports that I have read and seen on TV, this is working to help people find a better life.

The study I assume is going to look at how the procedure helps the person undergoing it.

It certainly may give hope to thousands of people that have just found a possible diagnosis to this problem. It may not completely reverse the condition for all people that have this terrible disease… but it may assist them to get some relief.

It is odd that there are people that have quickly risen to the microphone to declare this is political and this is wrong.

If you have some one you know (or maybe you) that have been diagnosed with possible MS – you will not be the protestor’s lineup. You will want help.

I imagine that large drug companies will object. Their method of course is expensive drugs and drug therapy. Cut off the possibilities that they won’t make money and they will make noise. Money is better than noise… but noise will come when the cash is cut off.

I can only imagine what Premier Brad Wall is walking through now. Lots of noise. Hang on Brad… don’t quit. The rest of Canada is behind your Government even though we can’t vote for you!

He is lucky he isn’t in Ontario. In Ontario the Big Drug Companies that make most of the drugs and do “research” would threaten to pull out as they have in the past. They are something else!

I write today to say thank you on behalf of all of us that are expecting a miracle. We believe in a Government and Leadership that will take a stand. Way to go Brad Wall and the Saskatchewan Government!

Pray for Leaders Today – almost 2 Years of Quiet Ministry

For two years now I have been doing something that I haven’t told enough people about. I have tried to tell folk about it – even shout it from the roof tops… but not a whole lot of my friends are listening yet… or better yet hearing what I am saying about this.

It is a kind of “special project” that I do on the side. It is “special” because everything that I do each day is revolving around this special something in my life.

And today I have further proof that this special project is working. The graph and stats tells me that it is working. See below…this past month July 29 to August 29, 2010
Each morning I pray for one of my Ontario Provincial Government elected leaders and their staff members. And each morning, before I do anything else, I post that person’s name and photo on a Blog for my friends and supporters to read (and pray along with me).

In a Minister’s world, it is what I do now. In the church world that I once was involved so heavily with – they see it as something that I do. It is their way of seeing me now. I have a “box” that I can be fit into as a retired minister.

When I introduce myself to other “church people” I will tell them of my “Ontario Provincial Chaplaincy” ministry. It helps them to see or know better about what I am… or do… or… kind of.

Some have joked that the Government certainly needs someone like me to pray for them – after all that they are doing now…and the way that they are doing it… “Ha Ha Ha…!” and they laugh on never really taking it too seriously. They don’t realize that what I have tried to explain to them is a very serious matter and something that I REALLY DO TAKE TO HEART and THAT I REALLY DO EACH DAY!

The general tone and feeling that a group of people I explain this to is… one of humor. Sadly this reaction is too often happening within the church as well as in the community. The feeling is that this “ministry” is kind of a joke to some folk… or worse yet not too important.. nearly kills me at times!

You would think that our churches out there would rush to come on side… but that doesn’t happen. Other than a few Ministers that have said they are supportive… and will tell others about this… there have been few.

I really don’t think that they do know… or in some cases actually listen to what I have explained to them. They already get so many calls from people that have great causes or ministries… that they can’t hear above the appeals that come daily… that is like a roar.

But my reward has been from the ones that I pray for. The people that I minister to make the difference.

Whether it be at the Queen’s Park (our Government Building in Ontario) or in the MPP’s office, by email – or by telephone... the thankfulness is amazing.

In our local hospital I also do the “On Call Chaplaincy” ministry. I do not go unless I am called. But when I am called the family is so thankful when I arrive and offer them encouragement. It is the same with the MPPs and their staff… they are so thankful. Knowing that someone has prayed for them in tough times, and will not broadcast it all over after what has happened, means a lot.

That perhaps is the key to the quiet success… I pray and have not broadcast what I pray about.

The Stats today show that 7,739 folk have come to visit this Blog(in 18 months time - 581 posts/prayers). The average length of the visit is 3:58 minutes (a good prayer)… and 13,666 pages have been read as of this hour.

If you are reading about “Pray for Leaders Today” for the first time… would you drop by for a visit too. I would love to have you come along.

Sideline…
Folk from the USA and other parts of Canada have contacted me to tell me that they are now beginning a similar ministry to their local leaders in their State or Province. In fact contact was also made from outside of Canada and in far away places that are now doing a similar ministry for their leaders.

Today I am thankful for all that has happened in this area. Stuff is happening that I never even knew about. It is amazing!

Wikileaks – a new problem to battle with

Our News today and yesterday is filled with reports about “Wikileaks” and the 95,000 or so leaked pages from the American Military. It seems that some American Military person sent these reports on to Iceland where the owner of the Web Site popped them up for the whole world to see.

Last night they reported that the site had crashed with way too many people hitting the site to take a look.

Today the reporting being done is all about what was in the “leaked pages”.

It seems to me that it should be about who leaked them. Wouldn’t you think that too? I mean the great tragedy is that someone is not playing for the team in this war. They have made a choice to let the whole world, including the enemy, know what the inner circle of the American Military has been thinking and doing.

That is a terrible in my mind.

While serving as a Minister I saw that happen in the church. Problematic Families had to be dealt with. Someone that didn’t agree then blew the whistle. Oooiee – talk about problems that followed! The person that had brought up the original problem wished to heaven that they would never had said anything.

When some one inside the leadership, that has access to the knowledge that the leadership has, makes a personal choice to leak info that can be damaging – that is so dangerous for the whole group!

Someone will be in a huge and troubled hot spot – very soon. The one thing that the Military does well is to find out who did what.

How does that affect Canadians?

Other than a good story to chew on a few days and a few more papers to buy… not much actually. BUT – then – it could have a demoralizing effect on our troops overseas to the point that they won’t trust others.

I saw that happen in our churches. One person made a choice that they felt was right – but knowing that it was contrary to everything the group stood for. That choice would not only hurt themselves but also their family… and their relationships with others. I have witnessed what happens to demoralized people. They tend to withdraw from everything.

Have you ever witnessed what happens to kids when adults make really stupid decisions that are suppose to make the adult feel better? The kids always lose. It sometimes happens right off the bat… but more often later when major decisions are required of the kids… they can’t make decisions at all… or if they do… the results are very wrong.

The situation with Wikileaks is serious. It points to something in our society that is just plain wrong. Now no one will trust anyone. But that is what war is all about isn’t it… a matter of trust. We don’t trust our enemies. But worse yet – when we stop trusting our comrades – the war is lost.

God help us all.

Today’s Blog Post
Experience isn't expensive... it's priceless

“I can do that!” was what I heard as the folk looked over my Wood Carving Display Table. I looked at the guy that had said it to his wife/gal friend… and just listened. He did know something about carving I could tell… but I couldn’t really tell if he was an expert or a novice/wanna be.

Another person asked me why I charge what I do for my carvings. “How do you arrive at that figure?”

It I hard to tell them why or how I come to what I do. Honestly… that is.

There are times when the price is very high for most people that stop by… other times the audience and the clientele that stop by could by the whole table’s worth in a heart beat!

It has taken a lifetime of carving to arrive at my Carved Canadian Goose Feather! To do it you must feel the wood at every stroke of the blade or chisel. You feel the sand paper bighting into the wood as it becomes thinner with each stroke. Then when you hold it up to the light source, you can see through it... almost. Only then do you know that no two Feathers are alike.

One person asked how much the carving in front of them was worth. It was detailed and had taken a long time to make. It is a show piece to help people stop and look… not intended for sale. The individual asked me “How much is this one?” I told this person, “If I was to sell it, it would be about $5000.”

She gasped, “Why so much? It is just a piece of wood!”

I shrugged and told her it wasn’t for sale. But she said, “I would really like to buy it… but that is too much money. Would you take $200 for the carving?”

“No thanks, if I was to sell it, and I am not likely going to do that now, it would be at least $5000. It took many, many hours to make this. In fact I lost track of the weeks or work that went into it…”

You see it is about the fact that “Experience isn't expensive... it's priceless”.

I am not blowing my own horn… but about 60 years of carving experience is worth more than $5.00 which people want to pay… and way more than the top dollar of $200 they suffer to pay… and the $5000 that they should pay but can’t because of their heart attack caused by my pricing!

So what are you worth?

“Priceless!” I would say. After all – what you have learned over these past years, the way that you handle things and the way that you can accomplish all that you – you are worth way more than what you are getting now. Wouldn’t you agree?

You are priceless!

This is Our Cottage

Alida looked at me and said, “This is our cottage!” and we laughed together. We sat beside each other with our feet in the water and a curious duck only a foot away. I took a few pictures of her – what a beauty.

We live in Cottage Country – at least on the edge of Cottage Country in Peterborough. In the middle of our city is the beautiful Little Lake with it huge fountain. We are sitting on the doc across from the Art Gallery. Our bikes are parked behind us and our bare feet and legs are in the water.

Behind us on the dock is a family from Hong Kong. I came to know that when I introduced myself and began speaking Cantonese with them. The dad was fishing with two younger boys while mom was watching and reading her newspaper.

I tried to get the Chinese man to go into the graveyard to fish with his kids – but he would have nothing to do with that! I told him the best fishing is near the graves the three ministers… but he said “No. People would look at me funny!” Then we laughed togther.

It was a very hot day. We have a very hot house when the humidity is so high so we escape.

We headed back to the house to fetch great grandma and off we went to some cool stores. I love their air conditioners!

The ladies went to Winners and I went to Chapters. Two hours later they picked me up.

A quiet place to read… for nothing… air conditioned and quiet.

Then we topped it off with a easy dinner at A&W… gotta love Papa Burgers or Uncle Burgers or Mama Burgers… and cold Root Beer!

I don’t have to go along the Cottager’s Route as they truck to Cottage Country… I simply watch them go by.

You gotta love when you are blessed… and when you realize that you are blessed! Mmm Mm Mm Mm MMMMM!

BTW – only about 149 shopping days – 5 months until Christmas!

Today’s Blog Post
Wobblies and Weirdos of Peterborough Coffee Shops

Meet Mr. Bob Bowers. He has been the local potential candidate for the possible MPP and MP jobs for Peterborough area in previous election season. If he would have got one of the jobs… his fame would have been greater than it is now. Now he has another kind of fame.

I have come to know Bob casually – from across the way – from where I was sitting. Never really came to speak with him but rather come to “know him” in a coffee shop sort of way.

After you are in these establishments enough you now who will be there in that particular setting. A few of us move around so we are known in many places.

Now before I say more about Bob I should explain a few things that will help you understand the stetting and the subculture that exists in our city.

Coffee shops all are different. There very situation in the city will produce different clients as well as the stuff they offer in the coffee shop. Different treats in different places bring different people.

For example the Silver Bean on Peterborough’s waterfront, just down from the Centennial Park, is a great one that we enjoy on our bike rides. The coffee is great and the great big cookie is enough for two people to share. The cookie is the size of a normal saucer.

Tim Horton’s coffee shops are easy to get to and fun to stop at. Each Tim Horton shop has a different clientele. Some are oldies, some are younger and on welfare(Ontario Works), and some are just not like everyone else. And almost all of them have someone that is really different.

That last statement is where I introduce the kind of “wobbly and weird” people that come into the places of business. Some of the wobbly people have different disabilities – and well… they wobble when they walk. That is not derogatory in classification… just a fact that helps you visualize what happens.

Weird on the other hand is not so easily understood until they do or say something that is weird. Not putting down weird people – just letting you know what they look like – or act like.

One dude appears in a number of settings – like I do. For that reason I see and hear what he does and what he says rather loudly to people he knows. He never seems to sit with anyone or have any friends that he comes in with… he just seems to know everyone. I call him Albert – “weird Al” for short – or W.A.

I think W.A. attends the “over the top church” cause that is what he talks about as he stands over some unexpected twosome to talk loudly about what happens in church last Sunday.

When W.A. sits by himself I walk up to him and talk over his table – at him. He gets uncomfortable when I do that because he can’t remember who I am. I change settings too often to let him get a reading and he hasn’t yet caught on to that fact.

W.A. is a misfit that maybe has some sort of mental handicap. Not sure what – just know that it is there making his social interaction a little weird.

Another thing that is quite noticeable is the Biker Types that congregate at a Coffee shop of their liking. These guys particularly like(d) the Tim Horton shop on George Street across from the Holiday Inn. They gather to sip their one coffee for a half hour or an hour or so. They want people to see them and their motorcycles. They don’t sit inside but must be outside to show off. Hardly ever there on a raining day… but always there taking up the parking spots for other customers.

They never bother my wife and I as we also come on our Bikes that we lock up to the fence… but we pedal these Bikes. Their Bikes are the Varroom Kind.

The owner of that Tim Horton Shop has had the police on these guys to move out and away... in that they hang around longer than the 20 minute coffee drinking time that is allotted to the patron.

Now back to Bob Bower.

Bob loves “The Only Cafe”. He likes the coffee and likes the prices. He likes his friends that gather there and the ones that he knows so well.

Now he sits across the street at the “Black Honey” coffee shop yearning to get back into “The Only Café”.

Get back in? What does that mean?

Well Bob has been banned from The Only Café for inappropriate activities that have caused others to avoid it when he is there.

It seems that Bob was having a bad lung day… and after some rather nasty deep coughing he spat out the contents of his lower lungs on the floor. If it had been once only it might not matter… but he did it more than once and while he sat in that one spot… gathered a rather significant lower lung collection on the floor.

Not only did Bob let the lower lung empty on The Only Caf̩ floor Рhe also urinated where he sat Рso I was told. Likely after coughing that hard he peed his pants too and then just sat there.

The waitresses and staff had a hard time dealing with this and so did other customers. So Bobby was told to leave and not come back!

That is not fair to treat some one like that – is it? If you sit next to him – you might think that it is fair. That is how I met him… by listening to him hack and hack away that foul inner, lower lung crapola… thinking that I might step in it when he let go.

Now think back to the top of this article – Bob Bowers is a potential candidate for the MPP and MP position of Peterborough.

Bob has now launched a Human Rights Commission complaint and expects to get satisfaction from winning his taking on The Only Café.

He is expecting to get $1700 to cover his move to Terrace Bay(where his daughter lives) Рwhere he went when he was expelled from The Only Caf̩. Then he wants $2370 dollars that he has spent extra in buying the 50 Cent Extra coffees at the Black Honey. And I almost forgot, he wants $20,000 for general damages that he has experienced to his self-respect and dignity.

Bob Bowers is able to do this because his claim will be heard as a Schizophrenic – a mental health condition that the Manager of The Only Cafe didn’t know about.

If you come to the City of Peterborough we not only have the Lift Locks and the Canadian Canoe Museum to visit – we have hundreds of Coffee Shops that you can tour while you are here. Think of them as the equivalent to the English Pub in Britain – only no Brew is served.

My wife and I are conducting tours of the different coffee shops if you want to come along. Discreetly we point out the different “Wobblies and Weirdos” that we know. And if you would like we can introduce you to Bob Bowers too.

That is easy… you just have to follow the sound of the deep, deep, deep lower lung calling.

Anyone for a Coffee now?

Today’s Blog Post
I want you to know – I AM NOT GOD!

Meet two different ideas of Christianity. Both are women that believe in what they are doing as the right thing to do. But they are miles apart in their thinking.

Both are “Christian” in the way that the word is used. Both believe in God the way that Christians do. But you need to form your own idea of what that words means to each.

I will call them Mrs. ?? and Mrs. ????

Mrs. ?? lives in North Korea. She did something really stupid. She shared with some one… that at one moment in her life she prayed and asked God for help. She told the other person that she had become a Christian. She was arrested and is in prison – and will be there for the next 15 years.

Imagine 15 years for doing something so stupid! Sharing your faith – how stupid can that be!?!? Mrs. ?? needs her head read. She has lost it all for a stupid decision that perhaps was done in a split second… feeling an urge to help some one with their difficult life… she shared her faith.

On the other hand…
Mrs. ???? lives in Canada. She was – or should I say “still” married. She is in a massive struggle to “find herself”. She believes she is one of the better Christians in that she can talk about God openly, pray really good prayers, write about God openly – as if she knows Him intimately.

She has children and a husband. She basically has it all… BUT… and there is a BIG BUT… she needs to find herself desperately…!!!

So what did she do? She did something that makes perfect sense… she found herself another man to stimulate her… help her find herself… you know – get in touch with God better.

The really funny part is that Mrs. ???? and this new man in her life have prayed about this new developing relationship and have got the Green Light from God Himself – go ahead in this new relationship.

She is willing to walk away from everything… but demanding the rights she has as a person and a woman… a Christian Woman at that… in order to find herself.

How silly of the whole world not to know that she is right… and has that right to have a happy life!!!

Now you be the judge. Which one is Christian – you know – the way that the word is really used to have real meaning? Which way would you call it?

Let’s do a little play acting… you be God for about 30 minutes… listen to the stories of both Mrs. ?? and Mrs. ???? Now make a decision about what should be done.

Tough one eh?

And people get down on God for not doing stuff the way they want it done.

YES – Mrs. ?? is real. My friend that is trying to help her just sent an email today.

YEP – and Mrs. ???? is real too. She hasn’t found herself yet. Still looking and trying desperately to convince God, her real husband and her kids that the “new way” is God’s way.

Her “new man” is all for it. Yippee – adultery under a Christian Umbrella – I mean how good can it get!!!?

I am glad that I am not God. I am glad that God is the only one that can be God!

If I was God… I might just do something really silly like tell the whole world how silly some people are.

Imagine – sharing your faith with someone – even though you know you could lose everything! How silly… how very silly!

Imagine – losing yourself, and not able to find yourself… how silly… how very silly!

I want you to know – I AM NOT GOD!

Thank God for that!

Finding Happiness – or Funding Happiness

“Happiness can be thought, taught or caught – but never bought.”

This simple truism is so important… but will never be understood by many. The bought part will always destroy people with the "happy" results lasting for a very short time. The other three will pass under their nose without them ever understanding.

The best examples that have come my way are from people that have suddenly received huge amounts of money. For the most part they are extremely unhappy people at this time.

Maybe it is just the millionaires that I have in my life and world.

Two were pastors. Both lost their marriages and their families when the suddenly wealth came their way. Both are multi millionaires and can buy just about anything… and have done so but now have few people they can share it with. These guys both started very poor and very down to earth… but now have it all with nothing.

My wife and I get confused when they are in our life. We have lived a life with the better part of nothing, often wondering where the next dollar will come from. “Tight” is a good word to describe the way that we have had to live. Then at times the word that is Tighter than Tight is actually how we live.

But through Tight and Tighter we have lived happy. We can still giggle and find happiness in each other. We are still married and have enjoyed life together.

I know another millionaire that the moment that he received his money he lost contact with all his family… brothers and sister, nieces and nephews and all the rest. They began to hound him for a piece of the wonderful windfall that he just received… until he had to run from reality and hide behind a financial planner and personal secretary that no one could get through.

This weekend I think that some one will possibly win $50,000,000. There are also 26 or so individual $1,000,000 prizes that are available for folk to win. WOW!

That is potentially 27 families that will turn upside down and never be the same again.

Okay I know you are saying, “Just try me… that would never happen to me! I can be trusted and I WILL BE DIFFERENT!”

Maybe you would be. But I somehow know that I wouldn’t be. I treasure what I have… and in order to maintain what I have I would have to give it all away.

That would be hard to do… just like it is for my brother ministers… who are now powerful men in their worlds and people treat them different… and they treat people different too.

Pause for moment…
Hey… Jesus was never rich.

Jesus is my Foreman… kind of… and his Father is the CEO and COO of my operation – corporation that I belong to. The Father owns it all… yet his son came to the poorest place and lived with the simplest people. He walked in among the worst of his society… and reached out to the lowest of low.

Jesus’ followers were all poor and got very excited when they found a coin in the mouth of a fish… to be able to pay a Tax that was due.

Yet they were happy. They had no church building to pay for. No pastor’s salary to pay either. They walked everywhere they went – excepting when going by boat across water.

Never once did they have to protect themselves from bad people that might have robbed them. They looked like they had nothing. They acted like they had nothing. They simply lived like they had no money – because they didn’t.

When a rich young man of great importance came along… he was told by Jesus to give everything that he had to the poorest – sell all that he owned and give the proceeds away as well.

Can you imagine? This weekend I will win the $50,000,000. Then on Tuesday next week as my wife and I discuss the way that we will handle it all… Jesus knocks on the door and when we open it… there is a long silence… before he says quietly… “Murray, I want you to give it all away… ever cent to someone that has nothing.”

Do you see how hard it has been for my Pastor Friends? They couldn’t do it either. They now are powerful men. Both are filthy rich – have lost their families and can buy anything… but are alone.

THUD! The reality of being unable to Buy Happiness is so real. It is not possible to buy it!

Both of my Pastor Friends once attended Sunday School Picnics and Church functions watching their kids laugh and play with other kids. Their kids were able to run down the street to visit other kids on the block.

They moved from the block when they became stinking rich. The kids lost their friends. Their wives left for various reasons. Now they are alone… terribly alone.

“Happiness can be thought, taught or caught – but never bought.”

Nope I haven’t bought a ticket for this weekend’s Gazillion Dollar Lottery Prize. I couldn’t trust myself with what I would definitely win. I am so blessed today in so many ways… that I would simply win it all. For that reason I will not buy the ticket. I don’t need the hassle that comes with it.

Today’s Blog Post
Defeating Selfishness

About the time you think you have it together… life becomes unglued… and it all seems to fall apart.

I am watching that happen to some good people at this moment. They have so much… but because of personal issues they will possibly lose it all soon. It is so sad.

I know that is a downer for today… but it is a reality. Personal choices have been very bad. Decisions have made a problem grow to proportions that even the strongest army would not be able to stop them. At least that is the way that the parties involved feel at this time.

Is there hope? I mean can we ever expect that things might change and maybe even go back to what they were before?

I am afraid the answer is likely “No” on that question. BUT it could be better. In fact it could be much better.

I have witnessed that part at every wedding. Stuff has happened in the past that almost made the wedding impossible to come about. Then attitudes change and the things fall into order. Providing selfishness doesn’t come back into the picture again… things could be okay.

There is that word again… selfishness. It comes at the worst times. It rears its ugly head over and over again… until it destroys all that are involved… and in fact it can come back generations later to bite who ever is in its way.

I am out to crusade against selfishness. Strike up a parade and declare selfish people to be outlawed and not allowed out of their homes… and possibly even ship them out of the country to Selfish Land – a country far, far away.

Wouldn’t that be something? A world without selfishness!

How could that be? Could it ever happen?

Maybe if it started with me… by being unselfish… and being ready to help anyone, anytime… maybe then it would be better?

Hey – you know that just might help. I think I will do something today! I will start now and give away what ever I can… my time… my knowledge… my love and my concern. Yah, that is it! Someone might get the idea.

Wahoo – the world is changing already… right before my eyes.

Today’s Blog Post
Old Rockers and Old Ministers – just never die!

Jerry is an old turkey that has been famous in days gone by. His long, stringy, gray hair. He has lived a full and rather famous life in the Rock and Roll bands of yesteryear. He was once famous and did gigs all over the world – in famous places before absolutely packed out venues. One such place he said there were about 10,000 jammed into the place they played that one night.

Oh the glory and the fame that he achieved. People pressed in around the guys as they exited the theaters and pushed to get autographs. What a rush… that fame and fortune way of living! And their group did make a name and make bundles of cash that they rolled in and rolled away.

Jerry lives not far from us and walks his dog from time to time. He is in the grocery store sometimes buying the bargains that I buy as well. His attempts at Marriage failed – a couple of them actually… and he has no one.

I told a young Rocker about my knowing Jerry… the famous Rocker and Guitar player. The young guy gave a disgusted, “Hummph… that old guy is nothing. Most guys I know could play circles around him today. He is a has been!”

The young rocker makes a lot of noise in his apartment and hopes one day that he will make a CD of the noise he creates.

Jerry is maybe a “has been” – but is now being rated by a “wanna be”.

It is a life moment that is too good to be true.

I sat in a church service not long ago. The folk didn’t know us – right off. We were kind of incognito – under cover of sorts.

At the end of the service a person shook my hand and asked my name. I told him it is Murray Lincoln.

He replied, “Murray Lincoln, Lincoln, Lincoln… I know that name… you used to be…” Then his words stopped in mid sentence… waiting for me to tell him – how he might know me.

I started to form the words and tell him that I once pastored a number of churches, with the one in our city being the most recent… in fact that covered 35 years of work and ministry… raising all kinds of money, starting dozens of community programs… and appearing in the newspapers many times over. I wondered if he would know me from my intense days of serving our country and the Church Denomination in South East Asia, learning to speak Cantonese and read/write Mandarin? I thought maybe he would have seen my on TV one day in the past… one of the programs that had featured what I do so well…? Maybe he knew me as an editor of three magazine and a cartoonist… Maybe?

Then he chirped in… “I know now… you are that old guy that my friend saw climbing that tree to cut it down. She was so concerned about what you were doing and suggested that we call some one to get you out of the tree before you fell! She said your name was Murray Lincoln!”

My Executive Brothers in our District Office of our Church Organization did remember me lately. They haven’t called or stopped by for a long time…(two years in fact) and suddenly the letter arrived informing me that I have not given enough money to a fund that they collect from all ministers in our District. It seems that someone in their great wisdom… made a rule and demanded that ministers (working or retired) are to be sending 5% of their income to the Church’s head office… and they had not seen any come in from me.

When you retire you cannot send as much as you had to(or were able to) when you were famous!

This letter arrived at about the same time that the Ontario Government has laid on to us the 13% HST tax… dinging me for my haircuts and my funeral expenses… and then the Ontario Government also nailed another fee that was hidden and never announced – to the things like light bulbs that they say they need to get rid of the light bulb!!!!

Jerry told me the hardest part is that he has to keep paying into a Musician’s Union of some sort(I think that is what he called it).

You know… I have come to realize that Old Ministers are a lot like Old Rockers… they are “has beens”.. something from another era and another dinosaur age.

Sheesh!

I have decided that I will send my reply to the Church Organization in Chinese… well written and corrected for errors… and when they can read it I might send them the $5.00 that they deserve.

Jerry and I will meet for coffee sometime soon. He needs a friend too.

In a recent article – written in Oct 19, 2006 – Pete Townshend was 61 years old then. His comments are funny to read… about Old Rockers…
Quote…
The 61-year-old rocker says he wouldn't pay money to go and see Dylan or any of his other contemporise from the decade play live, and insists he wouldn't even go and watch his own band if he was a fan because they are past it.

Townshend - who has just completed a world tour with his original The Who bandmate Roger Daltrey - fumed to Britain's Daily Express newspaper: "I don't think the big bands are going to be able to do this much longer, I really don't. I don't want to go out and see Bob Dylan. I don't want to go and see The Stones. I wouldn't pay money to go and see The Who, not even with new songs. It all makes me sick and I mean that in an ageist way.'

Townshend claims he very rarely sees many teenagers at Who concerts and insists the band only still manage to sell out stadiums because of their loyal older fans who grew up with them.

He explained: "People say, 'Oh I went to see The Rolling Stones concert there were lots of young people there.' But it's not young kids. Once. They come once. There are a lot of people who come and see bands like The Who once just for the experience.'
End Quote (reference below)

Granted there are some old ministers and old sermons that I don’t want either… yikes – we are alike!

Special Note From Our Government - and in particular "Grahame" who kindly provided the following information about the HST - that I referred to in the article above.  Thanks Grahame.

From an Email... July 21, 2010
Hello Murray
My name is Grahame from the Minister’s Office at the Ontario Ministry of Revenue and I read your blog post referencing the Harmonized Sales Tax. With the recent implementation of the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) it is important to learn about how the HST will affect people in Ontario. Based on the focus of your blog, I thought this might be helpful information to provide your readers.

This is about creating jobs and putting people back to work. Within 10 years our comprehensive tax package will create nearly 600,000 new jobs, attract $47 billion in new business investment and increase wages.

The HST is part of this comprehensive tax package that will see 93 per cent of Ontarians receive personal income tax cut. With these cuts Ontario now has the lowest provincial tax rate in Canada on the first $37,106 of taxable income. In fact, 90,000 low-income Ontarians will no longer have to pay Personal Income Tax.

To help families we have introduced a permanent $260 Sales Tax Credit for low- and middle-income adults, children and seniors. In total $4.2 billion in transition payments will be delivered to help Ontarians adjust to the Harmonized Sales Tax. It is important to remember that every $100 in tax relief is equivalent to the 8% tax on $1250 in newly taxed items.

We are exempting children’s clothing and footwear, infant and child care seats, diapers, books, food under $4, newspapers, and feminine hygiene products, from the provincial portion of the HST.

Please find more information on the tax breaks for people here: http://www.rev.gov.on.ca/en/taxchange/families.html

Another helpful document is a list of what's taxable under the HST and what's not: http://www.rev.gov.on.ca/en/taxchange/pdf/taxable.pdf.

For more information about the HST please visit www.ontario.ca/taxchange.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions regarding the HST or the government’s tax reforms.

Thank you,
Grahame

Today’s Blog Post
The Prayers of a Grandmother are Answered

Dear Yudell,
Wow! Your prayers have been answered. I can report that the things that you prayed for have come about. Your granddaughter Katie is now married to a wonderful young man. It happened yesterday. He loves her and she loves him. It is amazing to witness. Together they make a wonderful couple. You certainly can be proud of them and delighted with the way that Katie has grown and matured.

It has been a long time since we last saw you on that fateful day in the hospital. As Alida and I stood beside your bed and waited for your time to leave us… it was very hard for you and us. I gulp now even thinking back to that day 7 years ago. You left such a big impact on our lives and the lives of your friends!

I remember you asking if we would keep in touch with your grand kids and pray for them before you left us. It wasn’t long after that when you slipped away to be with the Lord.

We have tried to keep the promises that we made that day. Most of all I have kept the one big one – to pray for the kids now that you are gone.

It was one year ago that Katie asked me if I still did wedding ceremonies and if I would marry her and Tyler. Her dad and mom were excited about it and told me the wedding would be right there in their yard.

Well it happened July 17, 2010! Jim and you would have been so proud. And I know you would have loved to be there. I told the kids that you were there in your Spirit – even though you weren’t there in person. The girls both cried… because they miss you so much.

Oh I forgot to tell you… Brittany stood with her sister in the wedding party. She is now in Grade 11 and doing very well. I promised her that I would do her wedding some day too… and she cried again. This little girl has a soft heart and is something special. You know that better than I do. Yudell, you can be proud of them both – they are doing well.

And – the boys… your two grandsons… Jeremiah and Zach… they are two very handsome young men with beautiful girls friends. They pitched in at the wedding and each helped to make it a wonderful day for Katie. You would be proud of them as well.

I wish I could know that you will get this letter… but somehow I think you are reading it over my shoulder from your special place with God today. And I think there is a big smile on your face.

Oh one thing that I should explain about the photos that I have attached. The following shot is one of the Gift that I prepared for Katie and Tyler.
Remember those thick wool socks you knit that last year of your work at the church. You and your friends were knitting these for people in Europe that were struggling with the very hard winters. I kept the last pair that you had knit before you went to the hospital… to remember you.

Well… I decided it was the time to give the socks back… to Katie at least. I have given Katie one sock and told Brittany that I am saving the other one for her when she gets married. She cried again… my that gal is tender hearted!

I placed the heavy grey sock in a shadow box along with a Celtic Love Spoon that I carved for them. It has the Scottish Trinity Knot carved into it. The Knot is a reminder that the Father, Son and Holy Spirit will always be with them. The actual spoon part reminds them that God will always provide for them too.
Yudell, I am keeping my promise to stay in touch with the kids, Jamie (and Wayne) and Norma Lee… Katie and Brittany… Jeremiah and Zach. They miss you and Jim more than I can tell you.

Before I go Yudell… you have to know how much you meant to Alida and myself. Your cheer and happiness was infectious. Your love was spread in so many places to so many people… who all miss you so much.

If all goes as planned, some of us will be there with you shortly. We are looking forward to seeing you again… oh what a party it will be! Something like your 60th Birthday Party… the look on your face was something else!... but that is another story.

Yudell… as a Grandmother… thank you for your prayers. It appears now that each one is being answered in God’s time… his perfect, grace filled time schedule.

See you soon…

Part Two - Hints and Helps for Wii Kids Adventure – Sky Captain

The true test of a game that claims to be good for the family is “watch a family play the game”.

I can testify to the fact that Wii’s Kids Adventure - Sky Captain will be enjoyed by all.

First my granddaughter Emma tried it with me. She is 12 years old. She loved it and found the challenge exciting enough to tell her 15 year brother Clifford.

Last night Clifford completed about three hours playing the game… LOVED IT… and found it hared enough that he asked, “Grandpa, is there some place that we can get some “Cheats” or “hints” to play this game….!???”

He did unlock a whole bunch more stuff – opened another World while earning more Aircraft. Pretty Cool.

Yes – it is worth the price and a great game for the family that isn’t too hard and isn’t too easy. It is just right.

When we went to bed Clifford was beaming up cows off the ground from the flying saucer that he was now flying.

Great games Folks! Well worth the price… and great entertainment!

Second stage Hints and Helps for Wii’s Kids Adventure – Sky Captain
(First set of Hints we offered at http://murraylincoln.blogspot.com/2010/07/hints-and-helps-for-wii-kids-adventure.html  )
1. The Red Rings of Captain’s Cove are hard to find… much harder than the Red Rings of Gloster Island. We are stuck at 99 out of 100 and have no idea where the last one is!!! I suspect that it has something to do with the Skull in the Volcano – but am not sure!!!
2. By pressing the “+” button you are able to open the screen that shows the list of information that you may want to look over.
3. In “Achievements” there is an overall list of all the World Results of what you have accomplished so far. Some are collected from other levels – some are unique to the level you are in.
4. By moving down the list and then stopping on the one you are inquiring about – there is the answer or hint that you will need. It appears as a white Ticker Tape running across your screen.
5. One of the hardest ones that we tried to figure out was the flying Under the Sea!!!??? The Ticker Tape gave the answer. Down low to the water are Flying Fish… you need to be low enough to let the Flying Fish Fly Over you!!!! Tada. We found the fish near the Whale Bone structure sticking out of the water. They may be in the first level as well… just didn’t clue in until the Captain’ Cove Level.
6. Flying in the Stream didn’t make sense either… until the ticker tape told us to fly close behind and in the jet stream of the big ugly flying birds that will crash your plane when you get to close!

The Cow Thing is really funny!

And when it captures the interest of a Teenager – you know that it must be good!

We have completed Gloster Island, most of Captain's Cove and now Nimbus.

Love to hear how your family plays this one through!

Today’s Blog Post
“Come on you BOOGers let’s Parteeee….!!!”
I have told my wife a dozen times to not carry her purse in her hand! If I was a thief – her purse would be gone in a heart beat. I told her to put it over her shoulder.

The fact is that we now live in the most dangerous society ever. It is more and more dangerous to walk around and “think” that you are okay. Normally safe places in our city are now very dangerous to walk alone.

This is Peterborough… not New York City… or even Toronto or Montreal or Vancouver. We are a city of 75,000 people… not big at all.

But we are a city that is located just a 60 minute drive up from heavy population south of us. And it appears that the flow of drugs coming our way – makes Peterborough a little bit like Niagara Falls in the Drug Trade – it all comes here easily – whether we as citizens want it or not… and a lot comes when it does.

It is assumed that is the Drug Use in our city that has caused some of the rise in crime in our area.

Another couple we know well from our church have been deeply affected this past week. She had parked her car at a parking lot a little ways away from the Hospital and then walked to work. A thief stopped her and took what he could. In the process he broke her jaw in two places. She has undergone surgery and is recovering… but the mental anguish and the nightmares will be a long time coming.

It is not safe to walk to work at 7:30 in the Morning – that is very much after daylight has arrived in July!

Another man walking a public trail in East City, young and vibrant, was accosted for cigarette. He refused or didn’t have one… so the young man and two girls beat him up.

Another young man out behind Costco store for his break was also beaten and robbed by two young men… who then fled into the bush.

Along that same area another lady was robbed by two young men and hurt badly has she was punched and knocked to the ground.

That all has happened in a two month period of time… close to the population of our city and in daylight hours. Many of the situations were involved stolen jewelry and IPods – etc… things that are easy to transport and easy to sell later.

It also happened near wooded areas.

I used to be able to put a person my size to the ground quickly – in wrestling or a good skirmish. I have thought, what would I do if come upon by another person like one of these young guys… demanding money or smokes from me???

Hit them and then run?

Give them money?

Fight them?

It all would be easy to do but my ego would likely kick in when I tell them, “I will promise you guys that I am “on call chaplain” at the Hospital tonight… after I break both your legs and an arm… I will visit you! Let’s do it!!! Come one Dude one more step!”

The Robin Hood in me wants to do something. I want to organize a Band of Old Guys – that is BOOG – to walk these areas and catch us some bad dudes.

I have the perfect plan actually. It will involve my friends Terry and Winston. Terry needs a walker and Winston is an electric wheel chair.

With six other Old Guys we will wait in the bush near the area that the Bad Dudes frequent. Winston and Terry, taking turns, will come down through that area. The Bad Dudes will pop out confronting our friends. We then swoop out of the bush surrounding the Bad Dudes and catch them in the act… beat on them a little for the fun of it… our hearts beating faster than usual… and nail the suckers to the wall. It will be the BOOG STING.

I am sure that the Cops will love it – getting the help this way.

We have one paramedic type in the group and some of us have taken St. John’s Ambulance First Aide courses. We are covered that way… I am sure.

But I know that it is no laughing matter… we do need to be very careful where we go and when we go. The BOOG will not likely happen too soon. We need the batteries for our Pace Makers rather than the walkie talkies needed in the Great BOOG adventure!

But I can be more vigilant and more careful where and how I go. And we need to be!

Today I am off for my great BOOG Adventure… at the Wellness Center… for some weight training and exercise.

Oh… I forgot the best part… as we sweep out of the trees… we scream… “Come on you BOOGers let’s Parteeee….!!!” That scream alone will likely make the bad guys drop and run!

Hints and Helps for Wii Kids Adventure – Sky Captain
Oh Boy! We bought the Wii Game “Kids Adventure – Sky Captain” at Costco for the low price of $18.99. Then together with my Granddaughter, began to play it.

(WARNING – if you don’t play Wii or have the game – no need to read further!!!)

Emma and I love the flying games. She particularly loves the Wii Resort and the flying involved there. Now I have to admit that I love it too… and play it more than the grandkids – when I have a free time or so… okay… okay… lots of free time.

Well here is the problem with Kids Adventure – Sky Captain… it is new to Wii from what I have found out and was announced not long ago that it was to arrive this summer (2010)… which is now.

If you are reading this in 2011 or beyond – it will be old news. I am writing this short Hint and Help article for the 2010 people… and other grandpas later on that want to look like heroes to their grandkids!

As there is not a lot of Hints and Helps yet for this game produced I intend to publish some of my own discoveries here… and will do so in days to come… as we play more and more of the game.

Most things published simply state that it is a good game… not only for kids but adults too. It is also like “other” games. But if you have not played the “other” game and are more like me… DUH… what do you do next?

Here is what I didn’t know and know now…

20 Hints and Helps for Kid’s Adventure Sky Captain
1. Closter Island is your starting point – once you accomplish all that is required at this level a new one will open up.

2. The first level for me unlocked three planes for a total of four – a low wing (starter), a biplane, a tri-plane and a flying boat.

3. Accomplishing the different tasks and earning more points give you more Skins and also a higher level.

4. The problem I had was trying to figure out how to know the Tasks and find out what the Tasks were.

5. By pushing the “–” button you are able to pause the game and also see where you are on a Map.

6. By pushing the “+” button you are able to see the menu – that allows you access to the lists of things – missions – that you need to accomplish.

7. There are 100 Red Rings all over the island and objects such as boats and mountains. Some are easy to get – some are hard and some are difficult to find. I had problems with the one on top of sail boat and also finding the one on a mountain.

8. The Rolling maneuver is accomplished by holding the “B” button(trigger underneath the controlled) and turning left or right. It appears that you are getting points each time you do it – wahoo – but it is only ONE point for each Roll… and you will need to do 300 before you leave this level. Best to do a roll each time you have an opportunity when flying anywhere.. that way they get done early.

9. Fly Through all the Barns and Sheds. The ones near the freighter and also near the farm will have to be tackled with a Fly Through… carefully lining up at one end and then flying all the way through. Why – would you want to do that? There are Red Rings inside some of them and also you get points to move on by doing so.

10. Fly through the Train tunnels and the Highway tunnels. Try to do this in one sequence. Lots of fun. Some airplanes will do this easier than others… but by pushing the “1” button you can cut the speed down to turn in the tunnel… and “2” speeds up… just before you crash inside.

11. Flying under All the Bridges is required too… same idea slow to do some of them fast for others.
The Ranching thing is herding sheep with an airplane… this one is a little stupid for me… but you may love it.
The Water Balloon bombs are a ball… for putting out fires and also blasting obstructions that appear at the entrance to train tunnels.

12. The Speed Trials are great fun and will be the first that you will need to master. That is the Golden Ring.

13. Every once in a while a Gold Star floats across your flight path… you can chase it by increasing your speed using “+” – but in doing so you will have to go off course the Speed Trails.

14. The Camera tasks are fairly easy – good for kids – boring for Grandpas… but hey it is a Kid’s Adventure!!!

15. One of the hardest tasks is the Rival Race against a nasty Red Barron type plane… and pilot. He will always be ahead of you… until you learn that the “+” key will make it possible for you to out fly him… pass him and beat him. I have found that flying a Tri-plane just like his red one will keep up and pass him easily.

16. The Rival Race will possibly involve the two planes locking up into each other… in other words the wings will entangle with each other. Doing a Roll Over will dump him off but also likely throw you off course.

17. There are two Rival Races that are necessary at the first level.

18. The Balloon Busting is neat practice.. but you do not need to follow their suggested route… do your own thing is sometimes faster as you approach the balloons.

19. The Hermits Supply is a little difficult for the kids… as the supplies fall off if you turn too sharply.
The language spoken by the “person advising” you is not anything understandable… so the child and grandpa must be able to read what is written on the screen.

20. Turning on the Ferris Wheel is the harder task. Something like the Wind Mills and flying between their Blades. You have to turn on each section of the Ferris Wheel lights by flying through that section. So back and forth, etc… and lots of crashes.

I hope that helps a little. I needed all that… but couldn’t find it. Now grandpa looks like he knows everything!

Wahoo! On to the next level sometime soon – with more reports to follow!
