Today’s Blog Post
Joey’s Only and Counting the Fish

Talk about a useless “make work project”! Can you believe it?

I think whoever thought up this idea is either the World’s Biggest Con… or knows something about being able to access money the rest of us have never heard of!!!

I am thunder struck as I read the reports and hear what is being suggested.

Are you ready for this?

They have paid scientists to count the number of Fish in the World’s Oceans. Not kidding… really… absolutely for real.

One, two, three, four…. Sheesh where did they go? Under a rock again!? Ooops there they come again… One, Two, Three, Four…. WHAT the stupid fish has gone into those weeds…!?! No there they are again. ONE, TWO, THREE, FOUR… then there is FIVE…

But they all look the same… and move quickly… and there are BILLIONS UPON BILLIONS of them.

Wait a minute… Number eight just ate One, Two, Three and Four is swimming for his life. Now should I record 5 in that 8 ate 1,2 and 3?

Can you fathom how silly this is? Apparently the ones that have done the funding have some really deep pockets to spread the good will around.

I went to “Joey’s Only” fish and chip place not long ago – on a Tuesday night when it is all you can eat. I think I consumed 4, 5, 6 and most of 7. Did they get counted?

In the Guardian “Alok Jha” reports… that it took 10 years to do the count… quote…
“Published today, a 10-year study of the diversity, distribution and abundance of life in the world's oceans attempts just that. The Census of Marine Life, which hopes to paint a baseline of marine life, estimates there are more than 230,000 species in our oceans.

"From coast to the open ocean, from the shallows to the deep, from little things like microbes to large things such as fish and whales," said Patricia Miloslavich of Universidad Simón Bolívar, Venezuela and co-senior scientist of the COML. The study also covers crabs, plankton, birds, sponges, worms, squids, sharks and slugs.

A team of more than 360 scientists around the world have spent the past decade surveying 25 regions, from the Antarctic through the temperate and tropical seas to the Arctic to count the different types of plants and animals.”
End quote

Note it is an estimate of 230,000 species that they have listed so far. But then last week they discovered some possible new species off Newfoundland in Canada that they still did not know about.

Let’s assume that the average Scientist gets paid about $50,000 per year X 360 X 10 years = $180,000,000, But I doubt that they get paid so little…

This is the kind of story that makes me giggle. It is a good one to tell around the water cooler/Coffee Shop table to unsuspecting friends.

And as far as Joey’s Only is concerned… it is a great place for Fish Eating! I love it.

It is one of those kind of days. Thanks Alok for a great report.
