Sunrise over Ohsweken and the Bear's Inn

The Hospitality of The Bear’s Inn and the Six Nations of the Grand River First Nation Indian reserve

As we drove on to the Six Nations of the Grand River First Nation Indian reserve the sincere changed. The service stations all were advertising gas prices at $1.03 a litre for the Native folk… and a little higher at $1.20 for us other folk. Considering that is 13 cents less than the service stations just off the reserve – wow!

We were headed to the Bear’s Inn to stay the night. The advertisement on the Internet and their Web Site sounded very friendly. It states, “Experience Iroquois Culture and Hospitality at this Gracious Country Inn”. What do you expect with that kind offer?

The Bear’s Inn was everything and more than the Web Site told us. This is a beautiful place. See http://thebearsinn.com/main/about

Last evening at the “Burger Barn” we met the happiest waitress ever! This wonderful Aboriginal gal served us with a smile that burst out from her. What a treasure she was. Then a younger waitress stopped our table just to see if we were okay. This group of folk are amazing! No wonder it was said that it is always busy. We will be back!

How did we find ourselves on the Six Nations of the Grand River First Nation Indian reserve? “Retired and have always wanted to travel these parts” is my best answer. We have always had to hurry and get somewhere… but not so much anymore…. Except maybe the “Burger Barn”!

We have taken a much needed break away from the fray of everyday living.

My sister arrived from the Yukon and is able to stay with our Mom. She was looking forward to seeing Mom after quite a few months. This is a blessing to all of us.

Today we will hit antique shops or gift shops and/or coffee shops in between the next Burger places or gourmet eating places that are possible.

Why bother? Because we can… and being together is just too much fun!!

Watching the sunset over Ohsweken and then rise again this morning was a great blessing. So much happened between the two times yesterday… and what a joy it was!

For centuries before this time my Aboriginal friends were watching this same sun do its marvelous things each day… and some days hiding behind clouds. Oh – there is so much to write. This is the place that in the fur trade era, warrior and diplomat Joseph Brant and internationally acclaimed Mohawk poet E. Pauline Johnson came from.

This is like reliving history again.

Gotta run. My co-pilot of 45 years is ready to get going.

BTW - Thank you to the Bear's Inn - you are everything that was promised!  We will be back!
