Shake, Rattle and Roll – Does your Pastor carry a pistol and would he kill?
To say that I am blown away by what this posting is all about is putting it mildly.
First I must establish something for all my readers that are all over the world. I am Canadian. I was born Canadian and raised Canadian.  But I have American roots. It was my Grandparents on both sides of my family that came from the U.S.A. to become a part of the Canadian culture… and add their own flavour to what I know as being Canadian.  But whatever they brought with them as good (or as bad) as it was molded into the fabric of their lives… and as time went on the Canadian content became part of their lives in  a greater way.  They changed to what I knew them as, Canadians with a touch the good old U.S.A.
My family knew what guns were about.  They also knew what war was about with members of the family being killed in the wars that had surrounded them.
And at least two of the family in the two generations up to four generations back from me had died because of bullets.  Someone had aimed a gun at them and shot them dead on purpose.
One of the dead ones was the President of the U.S.A. Abe Lincoln and the other was a Great, Great Aunt that was shot by her husband… when he said he was shooting a weasel running loose in the house…ahem!
Now to set the story further I have served as a minister for almost 35 years and 5 years inactive now.  With this duty came the responsibility to stand in a pulpit and preach.  And guess what… not everyone liked what I said… or what I did. There were hundreds of great supporters over the years for what I did… but at times there were also many that didn’t like what I did one little bit! And as a Pastor you may think you are doing what you should do to show love but others don’t think you are doing what you should do… and oppose you in every way.
Well on September 29, 2013 CNN reported that a dude that had served as a Deacon in the church walked in at 8:20 PM and shot the pastor two times as he was preaching.  First apparently from a little ways away and then at close range laid another bullet into the old Pastor’s being.
Later the Deacon called the Police to turn himself in and also showed them where the two guns he had we discarded in the bush.
The Pastor’s wife and family were all there watching the happenings during that revival service.
My guess is the church closed shortly after that happening.
Whoa!
I didn’t catch the story on TV or in print until another Pastor alerted a group of pastors like myself to the story – AND asked a question if we all thought that perhaps we, as pastors and preachers, “Should we be carrying a gun under our Robes or Suits as we stand in the pulpit?”
I couldn’t believe the question when it was asked in the Pastors Discussion Forum that I belong to!  They talk about a lot of Doctrine, Church Politics and Churchy stuff on this Forum revealing what is happening in their area of the church world… and they come from all over the world but the prime group is from the U.S.A.
Right there out in the open the Pastors defended the idea that each of us as a Pastor should be carrying a gun ALL THE TIME… and specially in the Pulpit… to be able to defend the people that they care for as their Shepherd!!
I am still shaking my head as the discussion continues.  These guys are dead serious and actively do what needs to be done to be good shots when they need to shoot.
In the discussion one of the pastors revealed that the Louisiana story of the dead minister might have more behind yet.  Apparently the Pastor may have been involved with the former Deacon’s wife… oh boy!!!  If that is true the dude that shot the other guy may have thought he had provocation to do the dude in…. hmmmm?
No matter what happened near Lake Charles, Louisiana it was the attitude of the other ministers that love their guns.  They not only pack a pistol but also make sure that at least two other men in the church are also carrying as well to help where they need to help out in shooting someone – if needs be.
I am not sure how I should express my feelings or what should be said. These dudes will not listen to a lonely Canadian voice stammering his objections to the Big Bad Americans that loved to pack a pistol.
I cannot help think that the next time I am in the good old U.S.A. and attend church… I will be questioning myself… is that dude preaching… packing a pistol?  And if I say “Amen” too loudly or stand to give a “Word from the Lord” about the lack of love that I feel… would I be shot dead?
But then back in Canada some good ‘christian’ folk can be pretty nasty at times. And if they had a gun they just might plug me too.
I am glad that I am retired!

The Regrets of Getting Too Old Too Fast

In this past month I have been back in school again, taking classes each day.  I am almost paralleling my grandkids.  They are back at it with homework and so is their grandpa.

I am now in the process of study – doing the early stages of animation and character creation.  The hope is that I will be able to animate my own creations that I have developed over these years of drawing.  It is starting to become a possibility.

The joy that springs up with each class is hard to describe.  I love study and I love learning something new. It has been that way for a long time and never seems to stop. I hope it is there until the very end.

But there is a problem… I have aged and there may not be enough time to get it all done.  I am quickly scurrying toward the last days.

No. No. I am not sick and I don’t have a serious disease – other than entering my 7th decade soon – I am doing just fine.

But with the new computer program designs that have been developed in just the short few years of this past decade… new things are possible that were never possible before.  There is so much coming and so little time left to grab all of it and make it mine.

How do I explain it?  I have never, ever regretted my aging… and have always celebrated what and who I am.  But now the new is galloping ahead of me – or just in front of me… and I can’t quite catch it.  I am understanding it easily… but realized quickly that what is happening and the growth that is taking place is soon to be so great that I will not be there to see it all happen.

My grandkids will begin doing what I am doing and then continue to leave Gramps behind… Gramps can still do it… but he will be gone.  Dang it!

That idea being “gone” and not able to see the newest things that are happening is starting to make me shake my head.  I don’t want to go. I want to start all over. I don’t want to stop I want to keep going – Forever!

Now I see the deep desire that some oldies have for the need to discover the “fountain of youth” – finding it and then drinking from it or swimming in it might just make it possible to live on into the most exciting times that I will ever know – tomorrow!

But quickly and realistically you realize that it isn't going to happen that way. BUT I can do something now. I can start classes and begin study alongside the young ones.

In one class that I attended last week, the prof was just a wee bit older than my oldest grandson. He is so good at what he does and the way that he explains it… I can’t wait to get back to each class.

Better yet when I do what the young fella tells me to do I am blown away by what I can make or do or create. I am young again… and nothing can stop me now!

Today I am young again. Hey – maybe I have found the fountain of youth after all!!!?

Political Shell Games – yuk!

Political Shell Games – yuk!

Maybe it is my age. Maybe it is something I ate or stopped eating.  Maybe it is the weather.  Maybe it is something outside of my world that caused it. Maybe….

Whatever is happening around me is making me more distant and isolated from the things that matter.  The distance and isolation are hard to deal with.  I want to scream and in fact I have… but no one is listening.

Why?

I think it is the political games that people play that make me feel this way. When you know they are playing with you and with the things that you love… isolation and withdrawal are a safety valve response I guess.

Who is playing the game you ask?

Well the prime example in Canada is one Senator Mike Duffy, the stubby little dude that used to be a political analyst and a broadcaster about all things political in our Federal Government.  The Prime Minister of Canada liked his tenacity so much that he gave him a real job as a Top Political person – namely be was made a Senator.  No not a Hockey Player but a nonelected politician that has a good salary and super benefits.

But Mr. Duffy has been caught dipping deeper into the big pot of funding that he should never have been closed to.  Read the latest revelations here, “5 surprising things in the latest court documents”

A dude that used to be a TV technician (repaired TVs), by the name of Gerald Donohue, was on disability insurance so he couldn’t receive any income.  But yet he was able to set up a media company that Mr. Duffy paid good money into.  The media company however morphed into a ‘concrete form’ company that was owned and operated by Donohue’s wife and son.

How a media company can be transformed into a concrete business is enough to make anyone with half a brain say, “HUH? What the…???”.

Does Duffy and Donohue think people are that stupid?  DO they think that other Senators are that stupid?  DO THEY think that the Prime Minister and his cronies are that …?? Well… I guess so…!

But maybe it is because they all are doing that kind of thing. Maybe the whole darn works are crooked as a dog’s hind leg. Maybe you cannot believe anything anyone in that Government says or does.

Our local Member of Parliament, tough Dean Delmastro, has his own troubles. He has charges laid against him for breaking the rules in an election. He spent a lot of money they say, but only revealed part of what he spent.  And now he is complaining what these “false allegations” are doing to his family locally. People are turning on his family members to show their displeasure… using dog manure, threats and acting kind of nasty towards his clan.

Apparently Dean is innocent – so he says – and he will prove it in court. So let’s wait.

In the meantime the crapola that is coming from Ottawa with Mr. Duffy is not helping Dean and the rest of the Conservative crowd.  They all are slipping.

But I found out at an early stage in my life that walking through a barnyard full of cow crap, you will step in some and it is slippery.  If you are around enough crap long enough you will get it on your ‘Sunday going to meeting shoes’.

And politicians seem to take a long time to realize that little bit of farm knowledge.

But classically the way to handle the cover up is to use the “shell game”.

I first saw the “shell game” at a local Country Fair.  The dude that was playing it for money was standing behind a small table.  There was three cups upside down and under one of the cups he placed a pea.  Shuffling the cups left and right past each other quickly, so quickly that you had a very difficult time remembering which cup the pea was under.  Very few times the person that stepped forward with their money placed on the table – could guess where the ‘pea’ was.  The guy was good.

Money on the table?  Yep, it was kind of a gambling game. You laid down your money and he moved the cups quickly. If you guess the place where the ‘pea’ was, he paid you the amount you laid down. If you missed the ‘pea’ he kept your money. Touch luck sucker – bad guess, no ‘pea’, no winner!  Mind the “shell game” guy won almost every time.

A favorite way to win was for the dude running the cups back and forth, swirling in circles round and round… was to get rid of the ‘pea’ – hide it so not matter which cup you guessed you would lose.

Duffy and Dean’s Ottawa Country Fair “shell game” is a popular.

Do I sound like I am down on Dean and Duffy?  Sorry that is not the case… not at all.  But I am a little like the people that they interviewed on the streets in Peterborough over the last few days… I am not really sure what to believe. One guy outright stated his obvious, “He’s guilty!” referring to Dean. Others believed he should have his right to be heard in court.

On the side… if I understand it correctly… Dean’s political war team paid out $20,000+ to another company that returned the check.  I think that is right.  No… why given or how come… just that part of the story. It is getting better for the Media folks.

Talking with my grandsons age group is interesting. Asking how they might vote and for who… produces funny answers… and startling answers. “Nope… I am not voting. It is a waste of time. They all are crooked and I don’t like crooked people.”

Some don’t use the word crooked – but something more barnyard like.

Political Shell Games are played by many… all over our country. And when and IF they are caught being guilty of not guilty – no one will believe what they say anyway.

That is my “Maybe” answer for the way that I feel and many others feel as well.

Yuk!

The Opportunity to attend the OHS Conference 2013 at the Canoe Museum

This past Saturday I had the wonderful opportunity to join with whole bunch of ladies and one man as I attended the OHS annual conference (Ontario Hand-weavers Spinners – I think that is the correct name) held at the year at the Canadian Canoe Museum.

What an interesting bunch!  They came from all the different local Guilds in many different parts of Ontario.  I was an outsider but warmly welcomed as I displayed my Tatting – that is Lace making.

I have to be careful to make sure that I explain that it is Lace Making – not Tattooing!  Tattooing would fit into this particular group of folk.

My small booth was demonstrating the Past, Present and Future of Lace Making with Tatting.

I have developed new methods of using and displaying Tatting – hopefully to engage the next generation.

It was a delight to meet and speak with so many different ladies with so many different interests.

The photos seen here show the variety that I have presented.  My Tea Pots were a hit along with the Button Angels.

Thank you to Dee Jones, one of the local organizers and my contact person, for inviting me to meet with these amazing and talented people from across our Province.  You ladies Rock!

Beside Little Lake – the warm afternoon of retirement and early morning rain drops

This morning early the rain drops were falling on our deck outside our bedroom.  The door was open and the coolness of the night had flooded our room. The very cool air mixed with the sound of the rain pattering on the deck… made the warm blankets pulled up around my nose – just simply the most wonderful sensation ever!

I am retired and life is much slower than it used to be. And with this mode of ‘do almost nothing kind of days’ it is my reward for getting up early for more than 40 years. Bounding out of bed and being ready for the next big crisis was the modus operandi.

Now it doesn’t happen nearly as often – in fact never.  The only crisis now is maybe missing a doctor’s appointment or something like that.  Double booking doesn’t happen nearly as often as missed bookings.

Hey I am now retired just over 5 years – and I love it.

Yesterday My wife and I sat for a long time on a park bench… just looking at the lake, having the beautiful breeze blow into our faces while lapping up the sunshine.  It was maybe the most peaceful moment we have had in our lives… and that was after a wonderful quiet coffee time at the small Silver Bean coffee shop down near the water.

Some of my younger friends struggle with 48+ weeks of the year to get one week or so of doing what I do all the time now.

I am blessed beyond any possible way to describe it.

But we have to purpose to take time away from the normal stuff that has to happen.  Normal is also there. Shopping, appointments, meetings, and everyday stuff that can clog a calendar.  But in between the words of the stuff is a comma that shows a break where I can capture the unforgettable moments.

These pictures show a little of what happened beside the lake on October 3, 2013.  BTW – we were the only ones in the park – completely alone.

The George Parros and Colton Orr fight – no one was the winner – we all lose

The George Parros and Colton Orr fight – no one was the winner – we all lose

As I looked through the news this morning me eyes fell on a sad story about Hockey.  Some of you that actually are being convinced by the CBC that you should watch Hockey – may have seen it happen.

George Parros was knocked unconscious by Colton Orr.  See the story here. George had to be carried from the ice on a stretcher.  They are guessing now that there may be a concussion or other damage.  George may be done for the season.  And that game was the season opener. How sad.

There is no doubt in my mind that fans of hockey love a good fight… a rockum, sockum, knock down brawl on the ice.  Fans seem to love it… and pay big bucks to buy the tickets to see it happen.

What would ever happen if fighting was not allowed?

Now I should mention here that Colton and George already had an opportunity to fight in January 2011. At that time George had knocked out Colton. Colton couldn’t play again after he suffered a concussion… and was demoted down to the minor leagues again until he got better.

Fighting – why!!?

Well George and Colton are known to be the brawling guys for their teams.  They are there to take the other team on. They do things on the ice and in the game to get under the skin of the other team.  They do stuff to get at the other player – provoking a fight.  And in some cases that I personally know about… were told by their coaches to do what they did – take the other player out.

Teams and team plays are built of well-disciplined strategies.  Each of these strategies involved certain good players… and if you can take out a good player – so be it. That disrupts the strategy employed by the other team… and they will lose.

For me it is like playing live Chess on Ice. Take away as many players as you can to make your opponent unable to defend themselves.

I have five grandsons and one granddaughter that all play sports. Some play Hockey… which I hope they will fail at… because of the potential to get hurt badly. Others play football and have got hurt as well.

One is on crutches at this moment after another football player purposely speared his thigh with the helmet.  The ref never saw it… but it happened.

What happens to George Parros in say 50 years from now and his memory is completely screwed up… and in fact maybe it is not working at all?  Who will care then?  His wife – or future family will. But they will have the knowledge from his photos, from the newspaper articles and from maybe a winning ring… that he was a tough guy.  But tough guys without a memory are not so tough anymore.

I am sickened by what happened – and hope that someone will step in and say this is enough.  Come on Betman – wakeup. Come on owners of the teams – look into the eyes of the young wives and the children of the players… do they need this kind of pain?

Not at all – let’s change together!

I don’t Hate Brockville – now that I know more

I feel a little better about Brockville after hearing more of the story. Yikes!  It was not Brockville’s problem – but rather a dummy that drove his tractor trailer the wrong way on the 401 Highway on that Friday… crashing into another tractor trailer… which caused a massive fire and ruined the highway surface.

Then to make things worse in the city a train track runs through… and at about 3 PM a tractor trailer stopped on the very busy track, broke the guarding arm off that protects cars from being hit by trains passing through. Then near the same time a Via Rail train was forced to stop with that truck sitting across the tracks. Exactly when our lane of traffic died!

To say that people were mad was understating it.

A friend of mine that drove the same way, left Kingston at 6:30 PM and arrived in Ottawa at 12:30 AM – 6 hours to do a normal 1 hour and a half drive!

Sorry Brockvillians – I don’t hate you any longer… my huge mistake.

But it does point to some police that seriously needed to force people off the 401 at Kingston before things escalated to the near tragedy on train tracks.  Oh boy!
