Reddit and Imagur – sure fire help for long winter days
This Blog is read by many people. Some of them are little older. Many of them are in Canada and the colder parts of the USA.  The stats tell me all that.

So for those folk today I offer something special.

It is February 19 and Ontario is about to get another snow storm. To the west of Ontario they have just had another blizzard – for non-blizzard people means lots of snow and high winds.  In these cases Canadians and Northern US people stay inside.

And on these days they usually do things on their computers. Things like Facebook and email are popular more and more this winter.  You can also see as the storm hits an area there are way more posts than normal. BUT not all your emails and Facebook posts are answered – are they?

Having said all that I have something to offer these storm bound and storm stayed friends of mine.  It is called “Reddit” and also another one that is kind of connected “Imgur”.  These two sites will help anyone make it through a storm wherever it might be and for whatever time is needed to get through it.

BUT a fair warning, both are a ridiculously time wasting. Once into the sites and into what they do you will not come out for hours!  In fact my guess is… if you start today you may not come out until Springtime is half over!  Winter will have gone and you will not be able to even remember where it went!!!

I do not know how to explain “www.reddit.com” – other than it’s like the comment area on Facebook… only a gazillion times more – on almost any topic. And if the topic doesn’t exist you can start one… then sit back and watch how many people might think like you did at that moment.

“Imgur” is all about images.  People are allowed to comment on any image that appears and then you can Like or Dislike the photo… resulting in so many points for the image… and comments can be good or not so good – crude at times and without much editing… resulting in unkind comments at times. Instead of just your world of Friends seeing the photo and image… the entire world can see it.

My suggestion is that you may not want to contribute something that is too personal, something or someone that you love… because as sure as I type this there are real jerks that will cut it to pieces.

www.imgur.com is one of the strangest places I have visited on the Web – yet totally fascinating!

So, now as the storm approaches today for central Ontario… and those in Northern Ontario along with Manitoba blow snow… enjoy the Reddit and Imgur.

I do not know an antidote for these two sites yet… other than a good shovel and lots of snow!

Good luck!!

Way to go Martha Hall Findlay – sock it to Justin Trudeau – wahoo!
Ooops! Martha Hall Findlay goofed. In a debate that had some sizzle she attacked one of her fellow politicians, Justin Trudeau, for not understanding the middle class people he speaks about – because he is rich or from anything but middle class. That is my way to interpreting what she said against Justin.

The news media picked it up immediately.  Some of the crowd listening to the debate boo-ed her comment in the debate. Ooops – she stepped over the thin line of acceptable/not acceptable.

On Sunday she quickly published an apology on her Web Site to Justin Trudeau and other Liberals that she wants to have voting for her at the convention in April. (1. Apology report – 2. Apology Posted )

I have seen Martha Hall Findlay’s comments, Justin Trudeau’s life, and all the other politicians that are trying to push themselves forward for re-election/election. I have thought about all that they ALL say and do.  Then back again to Martha’s comments in that heated moment about Justin.

And with my mulling over these matters I have come to realize that none of them have a cotton pickin’ clue about where most Canadians live and struggle each week!

They have never clipped a coupon or followed newspaper flyers for the bargains that they need to make it possible to save a wee bit of money.

They do not know what it is like to be deeply affected by the local politicians raising taxes again and again – making new assessments on property that they have no idea about.

They do not have to drive an old car until it drops and then worry about where in the world they will be able to get another vehicle – or how to pay for repairs on the old car again.

When they retire they will never see their incomes go down – but rather up.

And that isn’t only Justin Trudeau’s situation it is also Martha Hall Findlay who is as of now not elected, but rather running a very good business and is paid very well. Both were and are well healed to say the least.

They have never seen the inside of the Food Bank or lined up with the others outside.

But whoa!  That isn’t the middle class that Martha was giving it to Justin about.  Most of the middle class do not get the chance to do the Food Bank – nor do they receive public assistance money for rent, dental, or whatever they need – like cigarettes.

I want to thank Martha for saying it like it is.  Most politicians have little or no idea what it is about. Oh yes they have handlers and helpers that supposedly tell them what the real world is about – but only tell them what they should say to get the vote.

I think Martha Hall Findlay is telling it like it is but she shouldn’t pick on poor Justin.  If Justin goes back to teaching he can be in one of the wealthiest pension plans and strongest unions going – the Teachers Unions that have more money that anyone and have a better pension plan than anyone can imagine.  In fact they are right up there with the Politicians.

It is Canada that I write from.  It is February and it is super cold – at Minus 22 C this AM when I got up.  And in Canada a good debate gets your blood flowing… keeping you warm.

Now if you don’t vote for Justin or Martha – you have all the Conservatives to vote for next time. That thought alone should melt all the Canadian snow – everywhere!  Global Warming at its best!!!!

Wahoo for Martha Hall Findlay – you go girl!

An amazing time at the Buckhorn Heritage Day – February 16, 2013 – thanks folks
The little girl with the Kitten Face was only three.  She kept coming back and back again to my display table.  But she was a cute little ‘imp’ to say the least. Daddy tried to keep up with her… but was not always successful.  She loved the ‘Dancing Dan’ and made him dance for all he was worth. And I loved having her there!!!

She danced a little jig when making Dan dance to the Quebec style fiddle music.

One of the first young fellows to come by my table display of the carvings and art work was about 10 years old. He stopped and tried to make Dan dance too.  Then as he stood there another one of him came again. Huh?  It was his twin brother.  Then as they stood there together another one of them came as well.  The third one was a spitting image of the first two – nope not a triplet but rather a one year younger brother.  Mom told us how she had enough when the third one arrived – she knew she would be too busy.

As the different people came by to look and touch, then take part in what we were doing at our table they would talk about life. That is what the table was all about – or rather that is what I am all about.

One old fellow started with some jokes… then he told stories about life. One after another he told me of the old days.  I hadn’t heard many of the stories before. But the stories were not as important as simply listening to a lonely old fellow that wanted to speak to someone.

Nope we didn’t sell a bundle of stuff or carvings. Together my wife and I sold ourselves.  We may have sold over $300 of one item that people will write to me about later.  We sold at least one or maybe two possible wedding ceremonies (I am a retired Minister)– which usually result in a few more after each one is over.

What I have described is the wonder of being part of the Buckhorn Heritage Day – held yesterday at the Buckhorn Community Centre – February 16, 2013.  It was all about connecting with people.  And at Buckhorn we do that over and over again!

I looked up one time and there stood four strapping young men. I say strapping because even below the maroon and white hockey shirts that they were wearing you could see the size of these dudes. They were big and they were tall.  I knew immediately if they were standing on their skates they would easily be head and shoulders above anyone else in the room.

Who were these young fellows?  They were the players from our Peterborough Petes – the local Ontario Hockey League team in our city. (read about them here)

These guys will very likely be drafted in a year or so to one of the National Hockey League teams.  Within in a short few months or years they could be the next “Gretzky” of the Hockey world.

They were kind of bashful when I asked them if they had every worked a lathe or wood before.  Two of them stepped up to try the Spring Pole Lathe that I was demonstrating.  You can see in the photo that I am standing beside a ‘man’ that is bigger than me – yet likely between 17 and 20 years old (not sure – I never asked how old they were).

With these guys was their Head Coach Jody Hull (read about him here).
Jody is a very personable and likable guy.  A dynamic community man – and a Head Coach who has recently brought the team from the very bottom of the league to become a possible contender for a playoff spot.  But whether they make it or not they have become “our team” and showing up at the Heritage Day goes a long ways toward being our community champions.

It was fun to see the young people and adults asking for their autographs. Nuts… I should have asked for one from each of them as well!

Here is my moment with these great guys… thanks Petes!

All in all I will be back again if I can move my old body into action next year. (It is getting harder to load and unload all my stuff… and I pay for the day after!!!)

But the day was successful only because so many people took part in the organizing and development of the day’s events.  These were the hidden people that so faithfully work behind the scenes.

Because of the amount of things that I bring to the shows, I am usually the last to leave when we get all the things packed up. And that is when you see the ‘special people’ cleaning up and making the place look like brand new again… it is also the moment that you see some of the husbands that come to lift all the heavy equipment back to its storage area.

It was at that very end as I was leaving the building, one of the ‘lead actresses’ in the community theatre events held at “Buckhorn Dinner Theatre”, was sweeping the floor and cleaning the area that she was working on.  Now that is commitment and I thanked her for all that they had done for us.

Impressed is not a good enough word for me to use to tell you what I feel about this event. All these people put WOW in the WOW Factor of a community event!  Thank you Buckhorn Heritage Day – you folk are amazing!!!!

Come to the Buckhorn Heritage Day show today – at the Buckhorn Community Centre – 8:30 am to 4:00 pm
Today is our first Show of 2013. I will be demonstrating my Spring Pole Lathe and showing my wood carving.  You might like to take a look at this short video that we made two years ago at the same show at the Buckhorn Community Centre – Murray Lincoln and his Spring Pole Lathe

Here are some photos from last few year’s shows.

The best part is the kids and the personal involvement with them.  Gotta run now – it is 5:30 am and it takes time to get there and set up.

I think I will stay home forever – forget the flying, cruise boats or driving on roads
Most of the people that I know and associate with are not world travelers.  They are not flyers or airline travelers.  They are car drivers or bus riders that go south and go slow.

They are also not business class people that fly a lot. That time in their life is gone a while ago.

So this group of friends never experience the airport security that everyone nowadays goes through.

Full body scans are the norm now in most places.  And if there is any possible strange reading on the security screen the individual should be taken aside and patted down.  That is what we all think – right?

Now remember before you say, “That isn’t going to happen to me!” – that it might and it might happen in front of everyone around you if you want to catch your flight.

The security folk, known as ‘blue shirts’ in the USA, are the lower paid staff that are hired by the companies getting the contracts to do this security stuff. At least that is what is reported by some that I have read.  In other areas they are airport staff that are still not the highest paid people in the industry.

These security folks also are aware what fight you will be travelling on… time etc.  And if you make a noise or object you might just miss your flight.

The story mentioned in the posting tells of a woman that was patted down/felt up in front of everyone!  And another man in a wheel chair that was also felt up as well.

“Felt up” – that is a sex term – how dare you use that in your blog!”  Well I dare write that because it is happening in broad daylight in front of others – and it is legal to do that. If they tried it in a bar or restaurant there would be an arrest, charges laid and they would lose their jobs. But do it in the open where everyone can see… it is okay?!?

I would like you to read this posting to get a better picture of what might take place on your next trip by airlines.

On our trip to Africa a few years back it was the first time that we had to remove our shoes… but never “felt up” – body scanners were not yet perfected or in use.

Now I know all my ‘old friends’ will be yet again confirming a bus ride south… and never fly again.

How do you react to the reports that are coming by way of these articles?

Well flying somewhere, say to San Francisco from Ontario, Canada, is less dangerous than driving through all the big cities on the way and past or near the transport trucks, or whacky car drivers on the highway.

It is a lot better than taking a cruise ship that may have a fire in the engine room and leave you bouncing on an endless ocean with no toilets, no power, no cooked food, no running water, no elevator from floor to floor – any way to get off the boat!

Staying home is looking real good now.

Word Discoveries for February – Increasing your Scrabble-ability

Word Discoveries for February – Increasing your Scrabble-ability
What is the antonym to break down, break up, separate, and unmix?

What is the synonym to amalgamate, combine, comingle, commingle, commix, composite. Concrete, conflate, fuse, homogenize, immingle, blend, incorporate, integrate, interfuse, intermingle, intermix, meld, mingle and mix?

The word’s scrabble value is 16 points.  Is that a good hint as well?

I am sure that I have messed with your mind already when asking the first question ‘What is the antonym…?’ let alone ‘synonym’.  In fact if I had stopped with the first sentence about ‘antonyms’ most of my friends would be shaking their heads at this point in my post.

The words search definition is a great mid-winter exercise for me. Taking time to think back into the musty old areas of the mind, the part that rarely gets disturbed is good for me.

Oh I know when you did that in your own mind you felt uneasy… and you could see the dust settling after you sued the words that I listed above.

How did this word every get into my thoughts today?

Well I re-discovered another word when reading the news this morning.  The word described a Tibetan Monk that walked out in the street and then began shouting some words of protest.  He continued in this way as he reached for a can of gasoline, dosed himself and his robes, then he lit a match.  Immediately he was engulfed in flames and was in terrible pain.

He immolated himself.  Imagine having enough nerve or guts to immolate!

It has been a while since I had read of anyone immolating… because people just don’t do that often. In fact they only do it once… which is usually enough.  And in 2013 China could really care less a Tibetan Monk immolated at all. It is one less person to think about.

But going back to my synonym list… I did not know that you could spell comingle as commingle as well.  And I didn’t realise that commingle, being a 9 letter word, would be worth 16 points as well.  That is the same value as the other word! Hmmm?

So have you had enough of waiting for the 16 point word that is now messing your thoughts for today.  You mind is totally messed up at this moment and you definitely need the word and the action that comes with it.  You need to immix, slow down and take it easy.  Now does that feel better – or at least starting to feel better?

“What will your last 10 years look like?” – Thanks Heart and Stroke Foundation
It may be the most powerful advertisement yet – specially for people past 40 years old. I know that it has my attention at 68 years old.

The question the TV Ad asks is very simple – “What will your last 10 years look like?”

Given the death rate of some of my friends I could well be into my last 10.  I could be living out the last 3650 days.  Now if I haven’t reached that 10 year period yet and maybe it is my last 20 years… how will I live?

I visit the hospital a lot – at the end of people’s lives. I am an On Call Chaplain at our local hospital. One 24 hours period a month I am designated to answer the phone call at any time during the day or night and go be there … for the end.

I see the results of years of living outside the safety zone. I see what happens to the victims of personal abuse of their health.  I hear the last breath many times.  I see the end.

The Heart and Stroke people have my attention now with their fantastic TV Ad. Way to go folks!  Wonderful – simple wonderful!

If you want to see what they are saying – and remind yourself of your last 10 years – take a look at http://blogs.montrealgazette.com/2013/02/10/what-will-your-last-10-years-look-like/ or other links that show you the video!

This is the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s Web Site http://makehealthlast.ca/

Thanks folks – great message!
