Somatization Disorder– I am sure I have it!!!!
Over the years I have been more or less healthy for which I am delighted. But something is changing … stuff is happening that isn’t so cool anymore. What makes it even more confusing is that many of my friends have similar problems. We are much the same.

Here I am referring to the new Disorder that I learned about in this past week…. “Somatization Disorder”.

What the dickens is that – you ask?

Well when I tell you I am sure that you will realize that you have it too.

Here is a quote to help us…
Quote..
“Symptoms include: Pain - Including headache, back ache, stomach ache, joint pain and chest pain.- Gastrointestinal symptoms - Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea. -Sexual symptoms - Erectile dysfunction. - Menstrual problems - ' Irregular periods. - Neurological symptoms - Problems with coordination or balance, paralysis, numbness, weakness, vision problems or seizures”
End Quote

Note also that this doesn’t happen all at once… but rather has been displayed or endured over the years and it seems to move around from one area to the next in the body.

Now when your doctor suggests this possible diagnosis, he of she will be sending you to a Psychiatrists! Whoa! That means something is wrong with my head doesn’t it?!?

I am not a nut case – I am just old… and this old stuff happens when you get old. Doesn’t it?

Medline Plus states…
Quote…
“Somatization disorder is a long-term (chronic) condition in which a person has physical symptoms that are caused by psychological problems, and no physical problem can be found.”

And…
“People with this disorder have many physical complaints that last for years and can involve any body system. Most often, the complaints involve chronic pain and problems with the digestive system, nervous system, and reproductive system.

The symptoms are generally severe enough to interfere with work and relationships, and lead the person to visit the doctor and take medication. The person often has a lifelong history of "sickliness." However, even after a thorough evaluation, no physical cause is ever found to explain the symptoms. Stress often worsens the symptoms.”
End Quote..

Now I am not making light of this. This is truly a problem for some people. They suffer beyond what they can describe. It is real.

My problem is that I am now feeling the symptoms more all the time.

When I exercise a little or a do some yard work and I nearly die the next day! Sheesh! I have muscles that I did not know about. In fact I think that they must have grown in these late years of my life. They never hurt before.

But then the great advantage I have now, over what my mother has at 89, is the Internet. I can read this stuff and self diagnose over and over again.

My mom can do this easily in a matter of a morning or afternoon and be convinced that she is not well.

(Sorry – not making light of that either… she is off to see her doctor today – just in case. And she has been right many times before. Yesterday we walked 8 Blocks together and she strutted right along with no apparent impediment.)

But if there is something wrong in my head… I need help.

But then again there is nothing wrong at all. I am just 65 years old and soon to be 66.

In my case at 66 years old the “headaches, back aches, stomach aches, joint pains and chest pains.- Gastrointestinal symptoms - Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea. -Sexual symptoms - Erectile dysfunction. - Neurological symptoms - Problems with coordination or balance, paralysis, numbness, weakness, vision problems or seizures” – could all be solved with one simple addition to my life…!!!!

Are you ready for this?

It is a Small, Red, Hot, Pontiac Solstice GXP Sports Car! I am sure of it. And if I totally want to get rid of all possibilities of having to sit in a Psychiatrists’ Office – I will add a Big, Strong, Motorcycle to that small order.

For about $80,000 I can self medicate and feel much better.

Now I know that it seems pretty much self centered thinking. It isn’t. I plan to sell our home, buy a Fifth Wheel Truck and Trailer Combo… which has a storage place for the Motorcycle at the back and the Red Pontiac Solstice GXP Sports Car can be towed behind. My wife and I can travel the roads together… and Arizona looks good in January, Victoria in the summer, and Ontario in the Fall and Spring.

Most of the symptoms are vanishing even as I type these words. Oooh Yah!

Doctor House, from TV, would be so impressed with me!

But then maybe I have Macroglossia, Macroamylase, Macroglobulinemia of Waldenstrom, Macrosomia, Macula Lutea…????

I found these all under the “M” category when I looked up “Mid Life Crisis”.

My wife had muttered something about that and suggested that I take up Golf… to which I stated that Tiger Woods made me mad… and that I hated Golf. She giggled and went back to her grocery list.

Sheesh! Here I am experiencing a major melt down and she is laughing at me!

I think that I will just head off to the Gym now. Most of the men in the Morning Sessions starting in the AM are older than me… fatter than me and have a hard time walking without a limp of some kind. The dressing room is a riot. I feel skinny.

This will be a better day. The aches and pains have almost gone.
