Today’s Blog Post

The Coffee Crowd and Timmy’s

It is that time to year again in Canada and now parts of the USA. It is time to “Roll Up The Rim” to find what prize I have won from my Tim Horton’s paper Coffee Cup. The coffee is not paper – the cup is. And you must have a paper cup in order to Roll Up the Rim – China cups won’t work the same.

“What are you talking about Lincoln?!? Every one in Canada knows that!”

Well the host of people that live in a huge part of the rest of the world and read this Blog – don’t. Roll Up the Rim is very Canadian. The only Foreign Country that is doing this now is the USA and that is only in 11 States.

Once a year beginning in about the first of March Tim Horton’s Coffee Shop does this huge promotion that gives away Vehicles, $10,000 cash gifts, Lap Top Computers, $100 Gift Cards and a Gazillion free coffees and donuts.

But you have to BUY a Hot beverage to get the chance to win.

Last night I tried again and all I got was “Pay Again” – oops I mean “Play Again”.

Why do I do this Canadian thing? Sheesh.

I read the fine print last night in the Tim Hortons restaurant we were at.

There it was – the number of coffee cups that they will sell during this advertisement campaign, published for all to see.

Now you have to realize that each time you “Pay Again” the chances of you winning are ONE in whatever the total number of cups that will be sold.

Here is the list…
British Columbia – 17,364,000 cups
Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba – 41,084,000 cups
Ontario – 142,652,000 cups
Quebec – 26,437,000 cups
Atlantic Canada including Newfoundland, Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and New Brunswick – 38,437.000 cups
The USA – with eleven states listed – 11,860,000 cups

Total 277,834,000 cups

Now consider that your one cup could have a prize under the Rim… and you win one… WOW!

Last year my daughter did win a $100 dollar Tim Card to buy whatever she wanted at Tim Hortons.

Tim Horton web site states that..
“As of January 3rd, 2010, Tim Hortons had 3,578 systemwide restaurants, including 3,015 in Canada and 563 in the United States.”

Way back in my life I remember installing the first three Cash Registers and servicing them in the first three Tim Hortons coffee shops. I met Tim and his partners at that time. Sheesh that was a long time ago… and a huge number of coffees ago.

Come to think of it… I just about own one of the Franchises today… but have no paper to show for it… only a lot of unrolled rims.

But I am not like everyone else. I have a Rim Roller… and last evening it again caused a stir as I zipped open my cup’s rim. Tada… “Pay Again”.

Wait, you actually did some work in the original Tim Horton's and you met the guy himself? That's, like, legendary! Cool...

Yep... when you are this old - you have pretty much met everyone. I spoke to him a few times, he signed for the work I did.. wish I would have kept the signatures... and when he was killed in the car accident it kind of was a tough day for everyone. My favorite Tim Hortons was on Tafalgar at the end of Rebecca in Oakville - it had the old house attached to it - and their board meetings we in the dinning room - that was where I met with the boys.
