A Comedian – A Lesbian – and a Minister

No one had a clue as to who Guy Earle was prior to his infamous one night rant back in 2007 at or towards Lorna Pardy.

No one knew who Ms. Pardy was either.

Yet the night the two met was fateful and both would go down as Canada’s history notables. These names are now engrained as a strategic point of Canada’s turning yet again.

Now most of my readers will not know what the dickens I am talking about at this point. They do not go to places that Guy Earle is featured. Ms. Pardy is also someone that most would not get to know either.

Because of what happened on one evening’s party scene they have both found themselves in court and very much in the media.

It seems that Ms. Pardy was very much offended by Mr. Earle’s come back at a Comedy Club one evening.

The come back was called for in that this is what fast thinking, fast talking comedians do for living. They snap back to the audience that is participating with them in the show. The audience is kind of expected to shout out their feelings about comedy act… and in return the comedian is expected to offer rapid fire come backs to the audience. If the comedian does this well enough the audience reacts in a positive way – wanting more and offering more.

Now again most of my audience is a conservative, careful and ordinary group of people. Very few of them attend clubs that have comedians offering this fare. So they will not know what is going on.

Ms. Pardy found out what happens in this kind of setting the hard way. I am supposing that she wanted to be part of the crowd as she began to heckle Guy Earle. As she yelled out her thoughts about Mr. Earle, he then turned his quick wit to her and responded in true Comedian Fashion with a come back to her.

This began an interaction that lasted for a bit more than the normal exchange. In fact when Mr. Earle became a little bit over the top with the taunts back to Ms. Pardy, she grabbed her water glass and threw it at Mr. Earle to cool him down.

At first reports I had not read the water throwing act on Ms. Pardy’s part. If it is true and she did this… is that not a form of insult or maybe even worse – assault?

Yet Mr. Earle did not drag Ms. Pardy into public court – it was the other way around.

Whatever did he do to deserve this?

Well it seems that his quick witted attack back to Ms. Pardy’s insult to his comedy act was offensive. He somehow noted her possible Lesbianism. She was with a gal friend making the table a same sex outing. Somehow Mr. Earle was able to detect the two gals possible sexual preference… and then use it in his words… to which she took offence… and filed a complaint at the British Columbia Human Rights Tribunal, alleging that “she and her same-sex partner were subjected to a tirade of homophobic and sexist comments.”

Now I am an ordinary citizen that looks on. And when there is something like this going down I need to know more. The journalist Tabatha Southey helped me to see it a little better… yet caused me even more consternation with what was penned.

Back in the Comedy club act/scene…
When did Ms. Pardy and her friend decide to word this attack back on their part? Did she, as a cool cucumber, sit there, settle down and then discuss this with her partner what they would do next? And if they did was that before or after throwing a glass of water on him? But wait a minute, Ms. Pardy confessed to throwing two glasses of water on Ms. Earle during that time.

Tabatha reported “Ms. Pardy, who claims to suffer from post-traumatic stress from the incident, has admitted that she twice threw water at Mr. Earle “in order to snap him out of whatever rage he was in.”

As I have been following this classic Canadian turning point in culture I am not sure what to think.

Probably not a lot of Comedy Act people are going to stop and consider what they say from now on – because of Ms. Pardy or Mr. Earle. But many of them will pick up on the possibilities I am sure. I mean if you were the comedian how would you throw out any comment when the next participants in the audience yelled out their objection or statement to you…?

Maybe they could say, “Excuse me Madam, are you a Lesbian? If you are, I am forced by Law and the British Columbia Human Rights Tribunal to not answer that comment.”

That would be the politically correct thing to say… wouldn’t it? And it might bring on a huge laugh…

Poof… another trip to the BCHRT.

“And Madam I am doing the Guy Earle protect my butt thing… and don’t want any hassle! And moving right along… have you heard the one about the goat that walked into the bar…?”

Oh boy… as a Minister I have touched on two areas that I should never go towards… Night Clubs and comments about Same Sex Preference People. To avoid any possible search engine hassle I avoid Homosexual, Gay, Lesbian words… but oops I did it.

I have nothing against anyone – comedians or people that listen to them – whatever they dress like, or do, or seem to be like… they are people like me.

I can offer Guy Earle some tips though. In fact this may be a Business Opportunity here.

As a Minister and a Preacher for 35 years some of my audiences have been way more than tough. In some situations I have had people yell out objections, stamp out the church in disapproval, and flat out call me down for being such an idiot for what I said or did.

I have had a list for 35 years of come backs to these Dear Christian brothers and sister… BUT have never once used them.

On my list is one that I can use easily. It doesn’t refer to sexual preference of any kind… are you ready for it?

“Why don’t you pull your lip up over your face and swallow real hard?”

In fact with very little effort I could assemble a classic list of unused comments that Ministers have placed aside.

Instead for 35 years, it has been far easier to keep quiet and move on, take your wife’s advice and just love them. Quick come backs don’t work well in Church. Offerings tend to drop when you offer them and you then sputter to say what you really meant.

Okay, Okay…enough of this. I just think it is kind of funny. And definitely Canada has turned another corner.

Tabatha Southey offers these words which I find most comforting…
Quote…
I can't say whether Mr. Earle was funny that night. That shouldn't have any bearing on this case. I'll just quote author Philip Pullman's answer this week to a question about offensive content in his latest book, The Good Man Jesus and the Scoundrel Christ: “No one has the right to live without being shocked. No one has the right to live their life without being offended. Nobody has to read this book. Nobody has to pick it up. Nobody has to open it and if they open it and read it, they don't have to like it, and if you read it and dislike it, you don't have to remain silent about it. You can write to me to complain about it. You can write to the publisher. You can write to the papers. You can write your own book. You can do all those things, but there your rights stop. No one has the right to stop me writing this book. No one has the right to stop it being published or sold. Or bought or read.”
End quote…
