The 43 Year Honeymoon and Anniversary

I am not sure which place or event was the most memorable. The Honeymoon was 43 years ago. Way back then as we camped along the St. Lawrence River, on the small hillock leading down to the river, the wind blew all night long making the tent shake and the plastic sheeting that covered it rattle incessantly.

Or maybe it was the time we were going to share one of our first meals together. Alida was getting the dinner ready on our three burner camp stove and I was blowing up mattress for the tent. Just as I blew harder the mattress suddenly caught a new life as it filled and straightened itself out with a pop. That action hit the handle of the pot boiling the corn on the cob and it all went rolling down the hill. Steaming hot cobs are hard to catch let alone pick up. Brushing the cobs off of the sand and grass was hard, as we laughed so hard.

Or maybe it was the delight of skipping down to the beach and setting my feet in the Atlantic Ocean for the very first time. We had never seen the Ocean before and knew nothing about it really. It was so cold that I nearly lost all feeling in my feet and legs for at least 15 minutes! The site of beautiful new bride in her bathing suit, sitting on the warm towel and laughing hysterically – warmed me up quickly! Ahem!

For the last three days we repeated the Honeymoon over again… but a much shorter version. It was three full days filled with laughter and giggling and fun stuff from the minute we woke up until we went to sleep at night. Today it feels like at least two weeks since I left home.

I shot 186 photos of this recent Honeymoon. I will publish most on a Photo Album on my Facebook… and some below.

This time around no corn on the ground… just Antique shops filled with the glory of the Old Days… with a visit to the Southworks Antique and Outlet Mall in Cambridge.

This time around it included a dream car photo op… with me and my new Lamborghini… way too cool. It is a car that I always have wanted to be the owner of… but tight money as a Minister hasn’t not allowed that freedom in spending. The cool part was the dude that let me stand beside his super car was shopping for Antiques in the same stores!

The time included a wonderful experience to the St. Jacobs Market and a stroll through St. Jacobs as well. You cannot really describe the amount of people that attend this market on a beautiful fall day! It is like the largest Fall Fair/Summer Fair in the country – every Saturday and Thursday!

There were many Chinese People at the Market. Alida mentioned that they were all smiling and must have felt like they had gone back home… a full and busy market is like home for them!

Our first 43 Honeymoon Dinner together was not over a hot camp stove. Instead we settled into a delightful Chinese Restaurant and ate an unbelievable meal. The waiters and waitress were very excited to take part in our Anniversary celebrations! The Chinese couple at the next table got involved too… he took our photo as we sat under the Calendar telling the world the special date.

I am still smiling – what a WONDERFUL DATE – Honeymoon Date it has been! I really didn’t’ want to come back to the real world. Sheesh! That is what it was like 43 years ago! But now there are Grand Kids to come home to… people that we love living near by and a wonderful group of OLD friends.

Gotta run… life is waiting for us… a Grandson has to get to his Baseball Game and we are off running again!

43 Years or 15,695 Days or 376,680 Hours Together – WAHOOO!

It was a warm and sunny day when I awoke on that special day so long ago. When it was ended I was 2200 Miles to the east and fit snugly into my car. The car was filled with Camping equipment and we were headed further east still – to places we have never been before. In fact from that minute on, for the next 43 years, we have constantly been on the go to places that we have never been before.

The journey started in Regina, Saskatchewan that morning and ended that night in Trois Rivieres, Quebec. Then the next night was near Rivieres de Loup and a breezy hillside near the St. Lawrence River. Then it was somewhere in New Brunswick after leaving Gaspe Bay. Next we stopped for a while on Prince Edward Island and then on to the beautiful Cape Breton Island, the furthest East you can go on Nova Scotia.

Neither of us had ever been there before and had no idea of what was around every corner on the highway. We were true tourists in every sense.

Our last night on that journey we stayed in motel, tired of camping and it was raining. The next day we snuggled into our new apartment together with a few precious things we had dragged along with us. One was Alida’s sewing machine that I had carried on to the airplane and lugged through the Montreal Airport all that way.

That special day… the journey started on was 43 years ago today.

In the last 43 years we have lived in Trois Rivieres, Quebec; Fredericton, New Brunswick; Oakville, Ontario; Walkerton, Ontario; Oakville, Ontario; Hong Kong; Oakville, Ontario; Scarborough, Ontario; Yorkton, Saskatchewan; Regina, Saskatchewan; and finally Peterborough, Ontario.

Every one of the 15,695 days we have had together has been an adventure! What a wonderful trip it has been!

Sure we have had some ups and some downs. No couple is ever perfect. We moved from making tons of money and a wonderful future with early retirement to a lesser income and a normal retirement – when I switched from a Business World to the Ministry.

But we are rich beyond all imagination today – 43 years later. We have two wonderful daughters, two wonderful son-in-laws, and six unbelievable Grand Kids! Wahoo!

Today we will celebrate as never before! And we have promised ourselves that each day will be a celebration of our lives together.

Gotta run… I have a celebration to plan for!

Alida Lincoln I LOVE YOU! WAHOOO!  Happy Anniversary!

Pastor Terry Jones – Whacko of the Week

Burn the Koran! How stupid can one so called Minister be?

What is terribly tragic… is the name of his little flock. The Dove World Outreach Centre is such a joke.

Pastor Terry Jones may be the most alone man in the world. But he certainly has the centre stage of the world for a short few minutes in his life.

A cartoonist in Denmark had the ire of the Islamic world in that they put out a hit on his life. A writer a few years back also achieved the same. Pastor Terry has likely done the same and perhaps even his congregation that may participate in this nonsense.

So you hate some one… what are you to do Pastor Terry… burn their scared book? Nope… Jesus said something radical about turning the other cheek. You better get a grip my dear fundamentalist pastor… get a grip and a new handle on reality!

I noticed today that the general news announcements have not placed him on their ratings.

Now Pastor Terry is not alone in his revulsion of the Islamic Faith. I have received more emails lately about Prayer in the Streets of the USA by large groups of Muslims (which were false)… trying to get a rise out of the reader and encouraging people to pass it on.

I have read the ruckus near the Old World Trade Centre… and the horrible attitudes of those that are involved. I have watched the Canadians take up a cause that is American… and start thinking that it is theirs. It is not.

There are issues that are very close to home – if we want to take up and cause. How about the way that our Canadians treat the Aboriginal People and the way that we allow stuff to go down around them?

Thank God for stuff in the USA – then no one can see what happens here!

I think Terry Jones is a whacko that wants his 10 minutes of fame. He is thinking that what he is about to do is about God… is God’s way for himself the people that he will place in harms way because a real bad decision… how the action he takes will cause hundreds of Christians to be killed and missionaries to be burned alive.

Whackos never care.

I am watching some other whackos now that are doing whacko stuff to cause their family all kinds of pain – just because God said it is okay.

God isn’t talking to any of these dear folk.

Terry… I wish you a good head start in running. Just don’t think of coming to Canada. We have enough whackos here already

The Giant Destroyer! Oh Yah!

“Aaarrrgh! Alida… that stupid thing came back or has told some friends about his old hang out!”

The Ground Hog hole I filled in so neatly and covered so well was wide open and the new resident had moved in.

And we were so kind… so humane… so hospitable taking him to his new residence near Costco!

Well today… I took the next step. Introducing “The Giant Killer” – it is about four inches long and one inch in diameter. It has a fuse that is lit and then the bomb comes alive. Just as this is happening it is necessary to get it into the hole and then cover the hole with dirt as the things burns rapidly.

The instructions give clear warning on NOT BREATHING the gas that is emitted.

The Giant Killer - Active ingredients include…
Sodium Nitrate.....46.2%
Sulfur.............34.8%
Charcoal............ 8.7%
Other Ingredients...10.3%
Total..............100%

Well… a few minutes ago, with my heart beating rapidly I lit the fuse of the bomb. I had the bomb tapped to the end of the old mop handle. As I stuck the mop handle into the hole with the bomb going crazy… it went away down and then down some more. There is only 12 inches sticking out now.

Covering the hole was easy… the smoke seeping up rapidly as I shovelled the dirt into the hole.

It is now about noon time… no sign of the critter. BUT the package said I should do it at night as that is the time that they are in the burrow. The warning was clear… “Have some one hold and flash light… and don’t breathe in the fumes.”

There was a certain feeling of power as that bomb descended into the blackness below. Oh yah! Super killer was now in charge! I did it!

Sorry I have to run… gotta make sure… wanna watch if he comes again. Right now there is a log jammed into the hole… but he maybe coming back out soon.

“Aaarrrgh!”

The 2010 Kinmount Fair – and Misty Hollow Carving wood demonstrations with the Spring Pole and Treadle Lathe
I wasn’t quite sure how it would work out. Alida and I were booked to take part in the Kinmount Fair working with the old tools and also working with the Spring Pole and Treadle Lathes. To my delight our daughter called and asked if two of our their sons could come for the Long Weekend in September. That meant mixing one Teen and one almost Teen into our presentations at a very busy Fair Ground.

I couldn’t be chasing the kids all over the Fair Ground.

Well I just happen to be one of the most blessed Grandpas in the world. These guys just want to help. They saw what I was doing and loved every moment.

“Grandpa what can I do?” – are magic words to me. I absolutely think I have gone to heaven! These guys are amazing!

Now the setting…
The part of the Kinmount Fair we are involved in is the Pioneer Exhibits. This consists of two wooden buildings with permanent collections in them. These two buildings are separated with a gravel pad between them where they place a giant, two mast, tent over the area and pioneer demonstrations of all sorts take place under the tent.

In one corner of the one wooden building is a great selection of ancient tools... that have been assembled and presented as part of their museum presentation.

Then just a few steps away from that area is the tent entrance where they have situated my two Lathes that I have been demonstrating.

I hope the photos will help you see some of this.

As I began my presentations to the folk walking by, a crowd would gather of maybe 10 to 20 people each time. Then over and over again I would tell the story of the old days and wood working.

Think of the Guy that sells the potato peeler or onion chopper and then put Pioneer Clothing on him… then wind him up and let him go… THAT IS WHAT I AM LIKE at these shows!

Now have grandsons watch you and they can do the same thing! These kids are naturals! They listened to what I said and then said the same thing over and over and over and over again.

I fact we all talked from 9:30 AM until 6:00 PM – NON STOP! Eating lunch was one bite and then talk…one bite and watch… and 30 minutes later I ate the last bite.
One man came by and asked me about the old tools. It was a great conversation. He was from Toronto and loved this old stuff, the country fair and the whole idea of what we were doing.

He pointed over to the tool area and said how much had learned from that amazing young man. He said, “I can’t believe it. I learned so much from that young man over there. He is just a teenager and he knew way more about tools than I have ever heard before… and he was so good in the way that he talked to me!”

I grinned from ear to ear and said, “That’s my Grandson!”

The man responded by saying, “Well it is amazing how well you have taught him! Congratulations!”
I beamed form ear to ear.

I looked over and watched my amazing wife. She had a huge number of people around her all the time. She welcomed them as they came by her table and talked to everyone. She explained the carvings that we had displayed and how her husband had carved all of it… then she gave out cards and pamphlets by the hundreds.

I saw Alida step back and take a breath and then Jonathan, the teenager, stepped up and began to speak to every one coming by. “MY grandpa carved all these. If you would like have someone special in your family done… he can take a photo that you give him and carve them in wood.”

Alida said it was amazing to see Jonathan take over. He was loving what he was doing and never stopped or missed a beat to promote Misty Hollow Carving.

Thomas is his younger brother. He is solid and quiet… most of the time. I stepped away from the Lathes to get a drink and a potty break. I came back and there he was talking steadily to a group of people all about the Lathe. He had someone about his age at the Spring Pole Lathe and they were trying it out. Thomas told them exactly what to do, showed them how to be safe and kept the show going. If Grandpa had disappeared for an hour or so he had it all under control.

I beamed from ear to ear again. These guys are amazing!

I gotta run. It is 7:30 AM. The guys are ready to go again. McDonalds is waiting for us… for a Big Breakfast… and then off to the fair again.

It is something else keeping up to teenagers that are excited.

BTW – the Kinmount Fair has a very large Midway… a place with lots of rides and fun. The guys were so involved with out demonstration they never asked to go outside at all.

Today I think there is a tractor pull… and some real noisy machines to see … so maybe Grandpa will take a look see… with his boys…

Quick Finger Willy in Seattle! The man that shot John T. Williams

What a tragedy! John T. Williams was shot to death on Monday. The circumstances around this shooting are both sad and mixed with some humour.

John T. was a wood carver… and a very good one at that. He was also aboriginal and specialized in aboriginal carvings.

With this background and the fact that he was living in Seattle, Washington at the time, made for some very bad circumstances that eventually led to his suddenly death at the hands of a reported “rookie” cop.

As John T. walked across the street… or stumbled as one report stated… he had a knife in his hand. The copper yelled at him to drop the knife – the deadly weapon. When John T. refused, didn’t hear with his deaf ear, or maybe just didn’t understand… the copper filled him with four bullets.

It seems to me that one bullet would likely be enough – placed in John T.’s leg or somewhere repairable. But nope… the copper didn’t like what he saw so… BLAM… BLAM… BLAM… and BLAM (just for good measure.

“That’ll teach you… you silly Wood Carver! Take that and that and that and just for good measure THAT TOO!”

How could someone blow another person away… and specially when he is carrying a knife???? This is so stupid.

Now John T. had some problems in the past… granted. Maybe he drank too much… and maybe even was using some of the substance that fateful Monday.

One report the other cops are now saying… that John T. lunged at the policeman. DUH – I guess so… that is why the man in Grey or Blue – let him have three more generous bullets! People lunge when they are allergic to lead bullets!

John T. is likely looking on right now and trying to tell everyone about his bad knees… when he stood up he kind of staggers when the old legs would support him. My imagination tells me that part of the story.

Today I was at the Kinmount Fair to demonstrate sharp tools and what sharp tools can do on wood. I am a wood carver like John T. When I stand up I stagger too. When I stood too long today…in one spot… I had trouble getting going… and I was holding a very sharp tool.

Thank God there were no cops around.

One cop did walk by and then went out the back door of the building we were in… and almost fell down with his foot caught on the rope… to which I quickly rescued him by holding the rope steady for him. Come to think of it, I had a knife in my hand at that moment too.

Thank God that Canadian cops stop and thank you when you help them. Not like Quick Finger Willy in Seattle!

This is sad… but John T. needs to know that there will not be a wood carver in the world that will not remember him… shot down while carving a piece of wood!

John T. Williams we will not forget you!

Today’s Blog Post

The Truth will set you free… except if you are in the political worlds

There are “Blog Life” lessons in Politics. Take for instance what is taking place in British Columbia right now.

You shouldn’t really speak your mind in Blogging – because you can thoroughly tick some one off! Even if it is the Truth. A reporter can speak the “truth” but not someone that is in the know. When you are in the know and in the family – you better keep your mouth shut!

Background…
The province of BC has been battling the HST being instituted recently… similar to Ontario’s battle. But the battle in BC is a little different in that through reporters have been digging deeply into Government Documents and found that the present Gov knew about the possible problems before the election… and chose to leave it alone… because some perceived the potential political nightmare because of it. And their perception was correct.

Now at the present time an insider, Jordan Bateman, last week Blogged about his feelings and that is a no-no! Yikes.

He works in the Langley BC area… from the Vancouver Sun’s article it states the following… quote…
“Bateman is in his second term as president of Housing and Social Development Minister Rich Coleman's Fort Langley-Aldergrove riding association. His term ends on Sept. 11, and on Thursday he said he will not be continuing in the role after that.

Bateman is also a local wedding chaplain and a councillor in the Township of Langley.” End quote (reference below)

Oh boy… he is a Chaplain that has spoken his mind. That is another clue… he is being too darn honest. And people that are in Power don’t want people to know too much honesty… or another way to say that is the Truth.

Too much Truth can hurt the party.

I read one of the posts (listed below) and see that Jordan was simply giving his honest opinion about the Premiere of the Province of BC. Reporters have been doing this all along. Now Jordan did it too and is he ever in hot water! Woooiee!

The issue is simple… the question is simple… once you are part of an organization… can you tell the Truth? Once you are in leadership – dare you tell what really is happening?

The answer is simply – NO! People expect it – but they know too that you cannot say anything.

Last evening I was visiting with someone. In the course the evening I spilled my guts… ooops… telling a few truthful accounts of the “sin” some members of the local church had experienced over the last 25 years.

It was a nightmare to live through for me… but I kept it quiet until last night I spilled it out… Ooops. These friends will keep the nasty little secrets I know… but I needed to say I now feel guilty for telling the Truth…. Because the Truth hurts…and in leadership you need to keep the Truth going in a certain way… not too close to people that might want to know the Truth.

The church is no different than Government… it is powerful and it has secrets.

This posting is not about Church, Government or secrets. It is about being able to tell the secrets and when you can be honest about the stuff you know.

If Jordan Bateman had waited and then wrote his Biography later on – including the juicy details of mismanagement and stupidity… he would like a have best seller. But by telling the Truth he knows now… he is being crucified.

There has been a retraction and a sputtering by Jordan… as he withdraws his former comments from his Blog.

Now as a person that has been in leadership… I wonder at what they have on Jordan now to make him take it all back and blame some one else? Someone has power!

Read the Vancouver Sun’s coverage to see the detail.

Blogging allows a new way to be Truthful… about things that you feel and see. Blogging also has a responsibility with it. You better know the facts and also tell the Truth... or someone will have your tale and what is connected to it.

Reporters have Lawyers to protect their Butts… Bloggers have Butts only… and if they know what is good for them they had better not tell the Truth… because the Truth can be sued.

We live in a sick and silly world. When people that are powerful can get away with choking the life out of someone that tells the Truth… and threaten them with whatever… something is wrong.

Locally in our own Peterborough Catholic Churches, leadership tried on occasions to tell the Truth of what is going on. A Local Priest that I knew spoke out against the sin he saw… he was posted in Northern Manitoba by the Bishop of the time.

Even ministers are expected to have a certain decorum… and keep their mouths shut. Even if they know the Truth… they are to keep quiet.

Whatever happened to the idea that “the Truth will set you free”?
