Today’s Blog Post
Bone Mass and Gravity
I was glued to the TV yesterday morning with all the rest that watched Robert Thirsk return to earth after spending 6 months – or 180 days in the Space Station.
As they lifted him out of the transfer pod to the waiting vehicle one man was shaking his hand in a congratulatory way. When he let go of Thirsk’s arm it dropped. They tenderly carried his very weak body to the waiting vehicle to carry him to the next stage of his reentry to Earth’s atmosphere.
Mr. Thirsk has live without his own weight for a long time. During this 180 days his body has lost calcium steadily each day he was away. Add to that his own muscle tissue also adjusted to carrying less weight around.
The one report stated that it may take Bob Thirsk 2.5 times as long as his space travel was to get back to the level of bone mass that we was before leaving.
In other words it will be almost a year before he will be safe to do normal Earth things.
He now has the skeleton of a Post Menopausal person… close to osteoporosis and very frail. One fall will result in a broken bone. And even standing in his very weal state he might well fall as one of his leg bones or his hip – shatters.
Six months of flying high has produced a very old man.
Now with the possibilities of people perhaps manning a Space Station on the Moon… or maybe taking the longer trip to Mars… these are huge issues to overcome before we send up the Astronauts to wherever.
If not we will send up strong me and get back noodles.
I question the fact that with Mars being much bigger than our planet… would the gravitational force be that much greater… making normal walking almost impossible… and I would then be way over 400 pounds. My skeleton as it is now wouldn’t be able to handle that.
Now add to that the effect of speed… excessive speed… on the Human Body. Every turn or movement on any kind produces stress on the human body. If an airplane suddenly pulls up – your arms feel a huge weight and you can hardly lift them.
This is just fascinating how people are progressing and pushing the limits as they tackle new frontiers.
Now I pause with a silly thought…the Original Astronaut
In about 23 days from now Santa Claus will leave the North Pole at about dusk on the International Date Line over the Pacific Ocean… then keep moving west as fast as he can… covering everyone from the far north to the far south…
In less than 36 hours he will deliver just over 6 Billion Gifts to the residents of Earth. Now if you cut that back to just the children – about 2 Billion of them in 800 Million Homes…
Here is the estimation that one source offered…
The distance Santa has to travel can be estimated from the following. First, while the surface area of Earth is about 1014 square meters, only about 30 percent of that is land mass, or about 0.3 x 1014 square meters. Second, we’ll assume, for simplicity’s sake, that the 800 million homes are equally distributed on this land mass. Dividing 0.3 x 1014 by 800 million gives 4 x 104 square meters occupied by every household (about six football fields); the square root of that is the distance between households, about 200 meters. Multiply this by the 800 million households to get the distance Santa must travel on Christmas Eve to deliver all the children’s gifts: 160 million kilometers, farther than the distance from here to the sun.
Thanks to the rotation of the earth, Santa has more time than children might initially think. Standing on the International Date Line, moving from east to west and crossing different time zones, Santa has not just 10 hours to deliver his presents (from 8 p.m., when children go to bed, until 6 a.m., when they wake up), but an extra 24 hours— 34 hours in all.
It was estimated that in between stops he would have to reach nearly 186,000 miles per hour – the speed of light.
The Space Shuttle re-enters Earth’s atmosphere at 17,322 Miles per hour and its Bottom gets very hot…sometimes losing heat resistant tiles.
Can you imagine what the reindeer’s outer coating must be to escape incineration?
So what?
Well I figured that this week sometime you might use this at the Coffee Break time… around the water cooler or wherever.
Have a great day!

Today’s Blog Post
Lucky The Dog....
(Special Note: This article arrived in my email box from my sister. I am passing it on because it is such a great story – enjoy)
Mary and her husband Jim had a dog named 'Lucky.'
Lucky was a real character. Whenever Mary and Jim had company come for a weekend visit they would warn their friends to not leave their luggage open because Lucky would help himself to whatever struck his fancy. Inevitably, someone would forget and something would come up missing.
Mary or Jim would go to Lucky's toy box in the basement and there the treasure would be, amid all of Lucky's other favorite toys Lucky always stashed his finds in his toy box and he was very particular that his toys stay in the box.
It happened that Mary found out she had breast cancer. Something told her she was going to die of this disease....in fact; she was just sure it was fatal.
She scheduled the double mastectomy, fear riding her shoulders. The night before she was to go to the hospital she cuddled with Lucky. A thought struck her...what would happen to Lucky? Although the three-year-old dog liked Jim, he was Mary's dog through and through. If I die, Lucky will be abandoned, Mary thought. He won't understand that I didn't want to leave him! The thought made her sadder than thinking of her own death.
The double mastectomy was harder on Mary than on her doctors had anticipated and Mary was hospitalized for over two weeks. Jim took Lucky for his evening walk faithfully, but the little dog just drooped, whining and miserable.
Finally the day came for Mary to leave the hospital. When she arrived home, Mary was so exhausted she couldn't even make it up the steps to her bedroom. Jim made his wife comfortable on the couch and left her to nap.
Lucky stood watching Mary but he didn't come to her when she called. It made Mary sad but sleep soon overcame her and she dozed.
When Mary woke for a second she couldn't understand what was wrong. She couldn't move her head and her body felt heavy and hot. But panic soon gave way to laughter when Mary realized the problem. She was covered, literally blanketed, with every treasure Lucky owned! While she had slept, the sorrowing dog had made trip after trip to the basement bringing his beloved mistress all his favorite things in life.
He had covered her with his love.
Mary forgot about dying. Instead she and Lucky began living again, walking further and further together every day. It's been 12 years now and Mary is still cancer-free. Lucky He still steals treasures and stashes them in his toy box but Mary remains his greatest treasure.
Remember....live every day to the fullest. Each minute is a blessing from God. And never forget the people who make a difference in our lives are not the ones with the most Credentials, the most money, or the most awards. They are the ones that care for us.
If you see someone without a smile today give them one of yours! Live simply. Love seriously. Care deeply. Speak kindly. Leave the rest to God.

I trail off his lecture at this point or I will lose you… the way that he lost most of the class that day 50+ years ago.
But then he said something that made the whole class groan. Pointing to the Elements Chart that he pulled down over the Black Board he said, “Before this class is ended you will know all of these Elements.” There from the top left side of the chart to the bottom right were 100+ squares with many numbers in them and Letters in them, H, He, Li, Be, all the way to the U-s…
The challenge was great…but we did what he suggested we could do. We were the future scientists and designers of the future.
Men and women before us had created unbelievable things like the Atomic Bomb that had helped end the war when we were little.
We also went into the Lab and did experiments with these Elements. We learned what happened when you put certain elements together and the reaction that took place… poof… sizzle… pop…. BANG! The smoke and sparks that flew were positively exciting. I couldn’t wait for the Chem Lab happenings.
One day one of my class mates was mixing two chemicals together when the teacher approached his desk. The Teacher asked what he had in the crucible. The student stumbled a little and offered a weak answer. To which the Teacher then erupted in displeasure… “You have to watch out! Are you crazy? Don’t you know what happens when you put dangerous things together and then add the final chemical!? You could kill us all!”
The teacher pushed the student aside as we all watched… and then he applied a tiny drop of acid and jumped backwards. The purple coloured mixed chemical in the crucible was only about the amount that would fill a half teaspoon.
The chemical suddenly burst into flames that rose to a height of three feet and filled the room with white smoke. He quickly opened the windows and let the smoke out.
(Note: This happened 50+ years ago before smoke alarms, high insurance costs, and law suits.)
Within a day or so after that the police came one morning. One of our fellow student’s desk was empty that day. It was the boy that had mixed the chemicals that had exploded in the ball of fire. The night before he had died at home while mixing more chemicals. Everything had exploded and killed him instantly. Apparently he had been making rocket fuel with the small amount of stolen chemicals from the School Chem Lab.
He didn’t quite consider all the possible side effects of what he was doing.
That was long ago…but I have never forgotten what could happen when something went terribly wrong.
(However it didn’t stop us from making homemade bombs – but that is another story.)
Whiz forward to now…
This morning I read more about the LHC that the wizards are testing near Geneva, Switzerland at this very moment.
The LHC is the “Large Hadron Collider” that is 27 kilometers in length – actually a circle… built underground… and operated under tight controls.
(You can read the link below referring to an article written by Matt Hart from The Star.)
The LHC and these dear folk under ground are about to create a small version of the “Big Bang” that some folk say actually started the creation that we know… and others in the theological world have added this as a possible method that God used to make us all… with a million other theories following all of this.
As I read the story and explanation of this new LHC and the firing up of this 27 Km Monster below ground… the words of my Old Chemistry Teacher came back suddenly…
“You have to watch out! Are you crazy? Don’t you know what happens when you put dangerous things together and then add the final chemical!? You could kill us all!”
The LHC will drive Protons against each other at just a little less than the speed of light… to cause an explosion inside the large LHC…
The scientists admit that they DO NOT KNOW WHAT WILL HAPPEN when the Protons collide.
With my vivid 50+ year memory in place… I can see a divided Switzerland when some one throws the switch… or could they be dividing the entire world?
Knowing what our class was like… that one big ball of fire in that Chem Lab the fateful day… was enough to encourage the rest of us to try something a little bigger and better – even though a friend had died.
Now at 65 years old… I see things a little different. I don’t want to Blow up the Chem Lab… or my neighborhood. I have had enough of Big Bangs around me. I can’t hear properly today – because of what I did back then.
It just seems proper to stand up and shout loudly… “Watch Out! Are you crazy!?! You are going to kill all of us.”
Theologically… we have always talked about a “Rapture” taking place… where people on earth will be taken up to meet their maker in the air.
The LHC may give the word “Rapture” a whole different meaning and possibility… we will no just go up to meet our Maker… the LHC will Blow US Up to meet him… BANG!
Yikes… that wasn’t the way that I was looking for it to happen!

The Large Hadron Collider – Watch Out – Are you crazy?!?
I would like to Whiz you back between 51 to 52 years to my very first Physics Class in Central Collegiate in Regina, Saskatchewan. The Chemistry Teacher was drawing something on the board that fascinated me. It was my first Atom. I was following him by drawing what he drew in my note book.
Then he said, “Everything that exists is made up of this Atom… you, me, your desk, your pen, this school, the earth, the sky…everything. And the Atom is made up of different pieces, one is the nucleus, one is the electron. Some Atoms have many electrons… others have few. The Atoms are joined together to make Molecules. Each Molecule is uniquely different from all the rest. Each unique Molecule makes up the elements that exist around us…”

Today’s Blog Post
Ah Nuts… It is Easier to be a 2009 Christian
The Hadza People of Tanzania
My world and the world of the Hadza People could not be any further apart.
In the last few days I have been reading further into this unique culture that is still alive in the remote region of Africa, and Tanzania specifically.
From what I have found they are possibly are related to the Pygmy Groups of Africa like the Mbuti and Baka people with a Bantu admixture (see reference below). They live near Lake Eyasi in a part of the Rift Valley that runs across Africa from south to north.
One of the writer’s material that I read stated that these people lived as if they are one huge camping trip all of their lives.
The unique part of reading about them is the remoteness of their existence in a world that is quickly becoming modernized.
The area that they live has Cell Phone capabilities. If you have a Cell Phone you can call anywhere. Yet the Hadza do not know what a Cell Phone nor do they have any use for it.
The Hadza have no medical help nor any need for a hospital. From what I read there were two methods of dealing with medical emergencies – You Lived or You Died. And when the person dies they simply bury the body and move on with daily life. There is no great emotional separation from that one… death is a fact of life. In fact none of the Western Ways of doing anything is their way.
Strip away everything that you do during the day except gathering food, eating food, sleeping(whenever you want to), and the most basic body functions – and you could be a Hadza.
Now there are some parents that will swear that their teenage son is a Hadza at this stage… and their main task is to civilize the teenager.
Because the Hadza is so remote and unattractive to be with few Westerners make this a tourist place.
One of articles written stated that the Hadza deal with body odor in their own way. The men feel that if their woman baths as few times as possible – maybe only two times a year – they are more desirable.
You will not find clean freak tourist pushing into a Hadza camp to buy trinkets. But then Hadza people don’t make trinkets nor meet tourists. Hadza people have no desire for material things at all. They own nothing except the killing implements that are needed to get their meal.
As I read this amazing story I could help but think that this may well have been how our own Aboriginal People might have been before the then civilized world made contact with them and moved in to be neighbors – bringing them beads and trinkets and all kinds of stuff that they could learn to hoard… the same as we do.
Christmas and gift giving that we know as part of our culture could not be more remote from the Hadza.
I am not promoting that we all start living like the Hadza people. But a readjustment of priorities might be a startling revelation for most of my world.
I mean if I stripped away all the “stuff” that I have… got rid of all of it… would I be less of a person? I certainly would have less “stuff” but I would still be a person. Wouldn’t I?
If I didn’t buy any gifts this for Christmas – would I be less of a person?
If my life was stripped of the building I live in and the buildings that I seem to need so desperately to feel good… or orientated… would my personhood be jeopardized?
If I didn’t walk through the Mall this year at least one time to buy some “stuff” – would my life be threatened?
If I couldn’t get into a church building this Christmas time – would my life turn upside down?
One simple thought that grabbed me as we walked through the new Mall in our city lately… Jesus and his disciples never gave Christmas Gifts… they never had a Christmas Tree… never ate a Turkey Dinner… and for the most part never did any of the stuff that my world does.
Yet we celebrate Jesus’ Birthday with the December 25th… and do all kinds of weird things in the Celebration that even Jesus would know about if he was here.
Our Christmas Celebration and all that we do are as remote from the original story and reason for it as… MY World and Culture is from the Hadza People.
Some of the words that Jesus spoke to a Rich Young Ruler that was asking about membership in the newly formed “Christ Following Activity Club”… were simple… “Here’s what you need to do to follow me… take everything you have a sell it… give half of the sales to the poor... then come and follow me….”
Can you imagine the struggle that the Rich Young Ruler had at that moment of realization that his possible new faith or life change would cost him everything?
This morning I will be attending our church to worship Jesus. We will sing songs about Jesus and talk to him. We will shake hands with each other because we are given sometime to do that… some will smile at each other. It is Christianity at Northview Pentecostal Church.
The building was erected in 1980 to help people worship God better. It cost $1,350,000. People didn’t have all the money at that time so they borrowed it – lots of it… in fact that was the amount that they borrowed… and owed in 1980.
When I joined the congregation in 1998 they still owed $1,350,000 – after 18 years of paying and paying and paying and paying. In fact with the 20% Interest rates of the 1980s they paid $1,000,000 in the first four years. Then they paid $1,000,000 more Interest in the next five years. Then from what I could glean from all that I read they paid at least another $1,000,000 in Interest in the next nine years… and the Mortgage money owed was the same after 18 years.
Now after 27 years the church owes around $749,000. In my period of leading and pastoring the church we paid down a big chunk.
I was delighted to hear last Sunday that a new plan has been launched to pay down and off the Mortgage and it will only take 18 more years to get rid of it.
All told that is only 45 years to pay off the Mortgage in the end.
I am a retired pastor of this church I attend. I accepted the debt load when I arrived and addressed it faithfully for 10 years. Now I will add more of my own money to help the debt disappear some day soon.
I write of the church debt to point out how complicated my Christianity has become from what Jesus first told his followers.
I am bugged by one thought that comes back often… it is a nagging one… “the debt of the church was not paid off because of your leadership…” I cringe when that thought comes by…
But then God whispers… “there are other reasons that I am dealing with… and it was there before you came… I will take care fo it…”.
Some how I would like to become a little more like a Hadza… all except the smell, the bugs, the food, the no furniture, no Mortgage… and no Payments… and no Interest…, the lack of a car, the lack of a Cell Phone, the lack of a Mall, and I do love the Christmas Tree… and Christmas Presents… and…
Ah nuts… it is easier to be a 2009 Christian!

Today’s Blog Post
Royal Gardens – WOW!!
Today I am off to “Royal Gardens” which is situated on Clonsilla Avenue in Peterborough, just up the way from where I live.
What a gorgeous place it is! Its name tells it all. It is truly Royal and even Regal. If no other reason it is worth the trip to just go inside and take a look. And everyone is Welcome!
I am again attempting a Craft Sale. If you follow this Blog you may remember that I made a grand total of “One Hundred Cents” last Saturday at the School Craft Sale. What will happen today?
Last week I brought in over $500 in Sales and Orders – between the Saturdays. I can’t wait to see what happens next week.
I invite you to come take a look at this Sale. The other Crafters and Artists that come are simply amazing. I have spoken with at least four of them and they are looking forward to today.
I pause here and will give the up date later…..
5:33 PM Later... Home again! Whew! What a day.
How does a 40,000% increase over the LAST SATURDAY'S Sales and Orders. Wahooooooooo! Yes that is correct! That is quite a difference in sales and orders for two contrasting sales.
I am very thankful for the response.
Then... opening my emails I find...
"Hi there! I was at the royal gardens craft show today and wish I'd come home with a bear. I would like to know if you are doing any craft shows in the peterborough area in the future? Thanks so much ~ 'C' ".
For you that care - thank you so much!

Today’s Blog Post
The Most Dangerous Viral Infection
I am absolutely sure that I have a “viral infection” of some sort racing through my system! With each passing day this week it has become more evident that it will likely take most of my life away by Mid December.
No it is not the H1N1 Flu.
In September I was perfectly fine… even on into October I was still okay. It wasn’t until this past week that it became a growing threat. Yes I am worried – very worried about what may happen.
Let me explain.
I was reading the following paragraph when it hit me… Quote…
"As a professional restorer of antique and classic watches for major museums, I recently reviewed the movement and individual parts of the Stauer Flyboy 1916 timepiece. The assembly and the precision of the movement are a mix of history and accuracy rarely seen."-George Thomas - Towson Watch Company
We turned to World War I aviation history for a timepiece that truly captures the thrill of the cockpit.
We can't really speak for the top German air ace of World War I, but it's likely he wasn't crazy about chronographs. For the British, French and Yanks who fought ferociously in the skies over Europe, new multi-function wristwatches proved invaluable. These stopwatches helped time complicated maneuvers like barrel rolls in their Sopwith Camel bi-planes. During dogfights in the smoke and flak-filled skies, any advantage was welcome. Stauer honors the early chronographs with a historic masterpiece, the Flyboy 1916 timepiece.
Honoring the "Millionaire Unit."
The air during the Great War was filled with heroes, but one group of flyboys in particular caught our attention. In 1916, a group of students from Yale University, driven by patriotic sentiment and daredevil attitude, formed their own "Air Force" to get airborne for the Allied powers. Using their well connected families' resources, these Bulldogs purchased their own planes and hired flight instructors. These Elis were from well known American families: Taft, Morgan, Roosevelt, Harriman, and Baruch. The press dubbed them "The Millionaire Unit," but years of distinguished service proved that their commitment was no joke.
Aviation history comes alive.
Our designers felt compelled to pay tribute to these pioneering pilots with an updated version of an early cockpit classic. To honor these adventurers of New Haven, we went back to our own history books and studied the early aviator's timepieces. The Stauer Flyboy 1916 is fused in rose gold and has three tachymeters and a moveable bezel to measure speed and ascent. The chronograph function allows you to measure elapsed time and stop on a dime. The interior complications measure elapsed minutes and hours as well as display a military 24-hour clock.Other watch manufacturers believe that when it comes to price, the sky's the limit; not at Stauer. This is a limited edition of 1,916 pieces, so please don't wait, our last 3 limited editions are completely sold out.
~ end Quote…
I know it is a lot to digest – the few paragraphs above… but did you get it?
They only have 1,916 watches left If I want one I have to order it NOW – or else it will be gone. And I will not be able to act out the part of a “1916 Fly Boy” with the fancy watch on my arm.
And to top it off it is only $145 USD (originally it was $195)
The “1916 Fly Boy” is in a catalogue that we received… from Stauer. Along with the watches that were shown I could get my wife some diamonds and emeralds and all kinds of stuff – CHEAP!
In Sept and Oct we didn’t have the catalogue… but after it arrived and I read all that it has promised me – I want EVERYTHING in it!
The Viral Infection is “Shopperitis” and the Christmas season is thoroughly a hold on me with one month less one day left until I can get the things I WANT! – Not what I NEED – but Rather WANT.
Take a look at these bargains shown here… I mean WOW – would my wife ever love me for getting these things! The text below each item has promised me that she would love me even more than now! WOW!
Okay… Okay… I know that it is not going to happen that fast. I doubt they can get it to me before Christmas anyway.
Think of it. With the tons of advertisements that have flooded our homes in the last weeks, the flyers, the letters and all the GREAT STUFF that they promise – no wonder we feel weird and like a viral infection has hit us. I cannot escape it!
Now I know that you are way more spiritual than I am. You are going to sell everything that you have and give it away to the poor… right? You probably won’t do that until after the December 25 – so you will have more to give away – right?
Hmmm?
Now if I have caused you to start scratching your personal itch… your own viral infection area…I do apologize. But my guess is that you have already made that decision to buy more!
Hey – have a GREAT SHOPPING TRIP…!!!!

Today’s Blog Post
And the Winner is… Emma Lindsay – and the Kinsmen Minor Football League!!!!
The Back Row in the Thomas A. Stewart High School erupted in Cheers as the Master of Ceremonies announced the winner of the Most Valuable Special Teams Player, among the Junior Teams, receiving the Sussex Engineering Trophy.
“And the winner is Emma Lindsay!”
Wahoooooooo! YAAAAAAAH! Alrighttttttttt!
I have to admit that it was all her family and close friends that exploded as the ONLY GIRL among all the boys in the almost 200 strong Kinsmen Minor Football League of Peterborough – WON THE AWARD!
Emma was a little embarrassed with her supporters coming apart at the seams… but hey… it may be the only time that this will ever happen.
One of the Fans cheering her on was her 88 year old Great Grandma, Marion Nellie Lincoln! What an honor for Great Grandma Lincoln to feel the excitement too. Without a doubt Great Grandma was the OLDEST PERSON in that Football Crowd – and she clapped just as loud as the rest.
The photo below shows Coach Joey, Coach Lloyd and Coach John. These guys are the heart of the “Steelers” and are behind the believing in the kids. They give their time and energy to help little guys and one girl do their best. What an amazing group of guys that give 100% of everything they have got to make 10 weeks in the Fall Season a complete success.
For the Lindsay and Lincoln Families it was absolutely the greatest thing that has every happened in 2009.
Next Sunday in Canada they CFL will hold the Grey Cup Game in Calgary. Even now there is great hoopla taking place with the Professional Football Players and their coaches flooding the city. But it is nothing beside the Kinsmen Minor Football League 2009 of Peterborough, Ontario.
Even the NFL of the USA falls short of what happened last night for the People of the Back Row of TASS!
To put a balance to what I have written… dozens of awards were given to many players. They all deserved them. The parents of each kid yelled along with us too. We all cheered everyone.
I want to thank all the organizers and supporters of the KMFL. These guys are amazing… simply amazing. We as Parents and Grandparents and Great Grandparents thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
