The Reason I Pray for my Political Leaders – Serge LeClerc
This past Saturday, May 7, 2011, my wife and I joined about 175 other people to remember Serge LeClerc. It was a memorial service for a man that passed away on April 16, 2011.

I can tell you that we were both deeply moved as we heard what his life meant to his “children” and friends. I can tell you that I have been deeply moved knowing Serge for the short time that I did. His life left an impact of thousands of people… and continues to do so even after his death.

But not everyone loved Serge. Serge was hated by some right up to the time that he died. If he was alive today, I am sure that they would still be hating him.

In the last few years Serge made a huge impact on people around him. And in fact Serge also made an impact on everyone all through his life – but that was not always positive.

It is hard to explain without writing a book… but Serge already wrote the book “Untwisted” where he describes some of his life as a Drug Dealer, Gang Leader and all round messed up man. With this kind of background you can easily understand how he would end up in prison… and he did.

He started his life of crime at 8 years old… and continued until he was an adult and imprisoned with a long sentence.

When he was inside of prison he had a radical change in his life as he asked God for forgiveness and accepted Jesus into his life.

Right away some of the readers of this Blog will poo poo what I am telling you as a typical jail house conversion. Well poo poo away… it really happened.

Serge left prison and eventually was granted a pardon. But that happened along the way after he enrolled in the University of Waterloo, studied for his honours degree in sociology with a minor in social work, and with a social work diploma.

But you need to know that he had stopped his schooling in Grade Five. In prison he began to read and he began his self help journey.

Eventually his path led him to help young people with drug addiction while working in Teen Challenge and other community groups that had significant success with drug addicts.

Serge’s journey that took him from being a huge drug dealer and player in Canada to a man that would have nothing to do with it… and was trying to help others… was a bumpy one to say the least.

Some of the bumps that he encountered simply happened as he rubbed people the wrong(or right) way. He was a powerful speaker and made no bones about what he would say. He pulled no punches… straight to the point and completely honest in what he said.

Now listening to him and his message nail you to the wall, make you uncomfortable, and or hit you between the eyes – could be a very uncomfortable experience. It was not one that you would like to repeat or look forward to again. You would know that Serge was right… and if you held to your point of view, refusing to hear his, you were wrong and that was all there was to it! You were the loser!

Serge was right and Serge was often hated for it. That is not saying that Serge was always right… it was just the way that he came across… but often he was right! He stood up for what he believed.

If this is the first time you have heard of Serge or maybe you have known him for a long time… you will not be surprised to know that he would fit well into the roll of a Political Leader. Yep – you would be correct with that thought.

Serge ran in the Provincial race in Saskatchewan for the Saskatchewan Party… and won.

Now I do not have enough space to tell all the history of the Saskatchewan Party in a simple Blog. They are a powerful, grass roots party that the people love… well at least a majority of the people love. Their leader, Premier Brad Wall, is young and vibrant. He is also a deeply spiritual person with a faith in God and Jesus.

But it isn’t the “Faith Factor” that simply burns off the Opposition Party in Saskatchewan. It is the fact that the Saskatchewan Party is formed out of Conservatives and Liberals joining together to soundly defeat the New Democrat Party(NDP). The NDP had been leading and struggling… the new party clobbered them from what I read and knew.

There is nothing more ornery or angry than a defeated Political Party. They are hurting big time. Every time they come into the Legislative Buildings they see their opponents in the seats that they used to sit in – and it drives them crazy. It has to!

Now having Serge LeClerc, former criminal, gang leader and all round bad guy win a seat in that same legislative assembly and become a top law maker and legislative personality – is really hard to take after this former scoundrel DEFEATED ONE OF YOUR OWN NDP CANDIDATES! It stung – and it hurt and every time he opened his mouth to speak – it drove the NDP crazy!

To say that Serge LeClerc was a thorn in the Political Opponent’s side is stating it lightly.

For many Serge LeClerc was one of the best speakers and motivational people that Canada has ever witnessed… and it all happened as he came from Prison and radically changed his whole life… but worse yet – he claimed that GOD and JESUS did it all for him!!!!

Wouldn’t you kind of be bugged by that if you were a Political Opponent and God was helping this LeClerc dude and forgetting about you?

Well they were and so were many people. Serge was a straight shooter and was someone to watch out for … and watch very carefully. Another election is coming on 2011… and Serge was a lethal weapon.

I am not saying that what happened next to Serge was the doing of the Political Opponent’s … even they wouldn’t stoop to a low tactic like the one that took place. But it was one that was conducted strategically by some one that hated Serge and someone that would know the best way to take him out of the way.

On April 16th, 2010 a mysterious package arrived at the Saskatoon CBC Office. It had a tape in the package that had a voice like Serge’s “talking about marijuana and cocaine use, as well as sex with a gay man. The transcripts alleged many of the comments were made in the spring of 2009 when the legislature was in session.” (Wikipedia reference below)

Another quote… “LeClerc removed himself from the Saskatchewan Party caucus on April 16, 2010, until he could "clear his name". On April 20, 2010, he announced he would not run in the 2011 provincial election. The Regina City Police began an investigation on April 21, 2010 but on May 19, 2010 they announced that no charges would be laid.” End quote

Now prior to all this happening Serge had met a wonderful lady and they had been married. She had a son of 17 years old. Serge had helped him with his addiction problems.

The lady passed away because of complications from diabetes.

Serge was alone. The attack came.

Some time after the mysterious package that arrived at the CBC and the resignation, Serge moved back to Ontario. He married again to a lady with two teenage kids. A new family for Serge!

Then Serge became very ill. He received the bad news of cancer in his own body. Before Christmas of 2010 – six months after leaving the MLA’s position it became pretty clear that Serge was not long for the world.

In January he was falling in and out of consciousness.

On April 16, 2011, one year to the day of the attack on his character and who he was, Serge Le Clerc passed away.

I know as a Minister that there is no greater threat to take a Minister out of the way than to start a story about his morals and his potentially damming actions. I have had a number of Minister friends that were remove from the ministry because of local hatred and absolute lies by opponents. It is real and it does happen.

I have had some friends also in the Political World that were removed and brought down, losing all that they had worked for by the greatest lies possible – lies aimed at their character and they were then assassinated morally. No one would ever believe them again.

When it had happened to Serge, he knew what was next.

A man like Serge that has lived for a long time in prison knew what a story about you can do. In prison it can get you killed. It doesn’t have to be correct or not. It simply happens after some one tells it… and starts it rolling.

Political Parties have learned a lot from the Prison system – or they just watch a lot of Cop Shows on TV. The method is a effective and it works well.

Nope – not pointing to the NDPers. Just look at what the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada did to Michael Ignatieff. Before the election process would ever start… he was labelled as something that was bad – very bad – in this just for himself. And with the election it was pretty easy to see that it worked.

On Saturday I remembered Serge LeClerc. Serge I believed in you and still do.

Rest In Peace My Brother.
