When you believe the Lie – it is downright funny

So the email reads …
This is the transcript of a radio conversation of a US naval ship with Canadian authorities off the coast of Newfoundland in October, 1995. Radio conversation released by the Chief of Naval Operations 10-10-95.
Americans: Please divert your course 15 degrees to the North to avoid a Collision.
Canadians: Recommend you divert YOUR course 15 degrees to the South to avoid a collision.
Americans: This is the Captain of a US Navy ship. I say again, divert YOUR course.
Canadians: No. I say again, you divert YOUR course.
Americans: This is the aircraft carrier USS Lincoln, the second largest ship in the United States' Atlantic fleet. We are accompanied by three destroyers, three cruisers and numerous support vessels. I demand that YOU change your course 15 degrees north, that's one five degrees north, or countermeasures will be undertaken to ensure the safety of this ship.
Canadians: This is a lighthouse. Your call.
End quote…

Like many others I laughed heartily at the stupid American and all powerful American Naval Forces… and a lowly lighthouse keeper off the coast of Newfoundland. Talk about dumb!

Well the story is dumb. It isn’t true either. Everyone knows that Newfies don’t talk like that!

The Newfie would have said, “This ain’t no blinkin’ ship, guv’nor. This ‘ere’s a light’ouse!”

And it wasn’t the USS Lincoln it was a tramp steamer in 1939 book telling the story… not a many times over forwarding of a story that wasn’t even true to start – but it was a good yarn!

It is one of those stories that keeps on going. In fact people that I have read , Stephen Covey and Gary Smalley both have used the account as if it was fact. And a Swedish company that makes marine navigational equipment made a TV ad film using the story… and won an award at Cannes Lion International Advertising Festival – for the film clip. Imagine.

This is the best account for me to share today.

I have heard stories told about some of you. They were unbelievable yet I shook my head when they told me your name. “How could he do that kind of thing?!” “Can you believe that woman – how could she do that?”

Yet I believed what was said. Sorry I did that to you. But it was just something that made so much sense… I had to believe it.

This Sunday morning I am speaking in a local church. This should be so much fun! I can’t wait. In that church there a whole lot of people that believed “tall tales” about me… in fact they believed a lot of “tall tales” about me and ran away from finding out the truth. And Sunday morning I am showing up to preach! This is just too funny. Their pastor thought it would be a good idea.

That is something like the Captain of that USS Lincoln holidaying in Newfoundland. Can you imagine what he would say?

I am sure that you have all had something like that happen to you too. They told stories about you that were a crock… an absolute fabrication. And you had to live with the fall out of that ever since.

I say thank you to all my Facebook Friends that now pass on what my old email buddies used to pass my way. They never check what they send out and what might be connected with it.

So my hand and arm goes up to the USS Naval personnel that took on the imaginary Canadian lighthouse… and I salute the Imaginary USS Naval guy! Well done mate – well done!
