Today’s Blog Post

Christmas Alert!

It seems like it was just yesterday that we were getting into the Christmas Spirit of 2008. Now we are rushing again toward the next one – 2009. In fact as you can see – only One Month until we celebrate that one day of the year again.

I was thinking of the magic of the season in our family and how it has changed over the years for me.

From the days of being the boy that was excited about it all… not being able to wait for the Christmas Morning gift opening times… to the Grandpa now watching my Grandsons almost vibrate with anticipation of what they will get One month from now. What a difference a few years make.

What is the one thing that you are reminded of this year – as you approach this Holiday Season? What is a memory that you will keep? Who will you share this memory with?

My thoughts are often of family and the ‘big people’ that were there in my life as a boy. Then they shift to the times when I became a ‘big people’ to the kids. The days when our own family started to grow and the kids caught the excitement. Now we are at the next stage with our kids and grandkids carrying the excitement.

Last night another man that had returned from Prison messed up and is now back in Prison… for a while anyway. His actions and lack of ability to cope with the community around him, point to a need that I have again been reminded of. The Ex-offender has a hard time coping with the Christmas feelings.

For the most part these men have known what I have known as a boy. They have the warm and fuzzy feelings too – from the past.
The problem is that the events in their lives kind of destroyed the warm and fuzzy stuff from the past… and the relationship with their family. Christmas often stopped dead when the crime, charges and conviction came down. From that moment on there was little good about Christmas for these guys. In fact if the story could be told – a prison cell inside on Christmas Morning is just about the worst place on earth…lonely… memory flooded… and with tons of regret wrapping the mind of the many in the cells.

It is also the most lonely place when he comes out of prison. The fact that everyone else is celebrating and he has no one… is worse again. Inside of prison he became used to the 27 or so years of the ‘Inside Christmas Season” everyone he knew was in the same boat… now outside he doesn’t even have the guys that he knew ‘Inside’.

My Christmas wish this year is that each guy living in the community after serving his time in Prison – would have one family invite him to share with them.

“How in the world could you do that? I don’t know any body from Prison?” someone asks.

My response is, “They are closer to you than you think.”

Call a community Chaplain and ask how you might help out. He will know someone that has no one. There is one of these guys in every community across Canada… and they would love to have that kind of support.

A few years ago when things were somewhat simpler I spent my Christmas day playing board games with some of these fellows in a local provincial jail. It was the best afternoon that I had in my entire life and ministry. I became one of them… and they were welcome into my life.

Stopping to think about it… that was what Christmas was all about originally… God allowed his Son to be born as a human… to become one of us… and share our world with him… in fact to enter our world completely.

What if we were able to do the same with those in need around us? What if… I was really a Christ Follower in all that I did? What if I got involved – completely and really cared enough to give myself away this Christmas time? What if?

This is my Christmas alert. I am alerting myself to the need that is real and that is in front of me. I think that we will have company this year again… someone that is alone and lonely… some one that that is regretting the time that they are facing. Hmmm?

Deer Alert! Deer Alert! – Hunter Alert! Hunter Alert!

Sometime on Tuesday Morning, November 24, 2009 (today) a White Tailed Doe was discovered in the heart of Toronto’s downtown area. First it was spotted near the Union Train Station – which is where the Go Train brings in the commuters from all over. (Some guessed the Deer came on a train)

Within a short while it made its way up to the Bay and Dundas area and hunkered down in a small bush. Doing what every deer does when it is trying to avoid the people – hide.

As you read the story it is kind of funny really.

We are just through the Hunting Season when red blooded, grunting and scratching Canadian Hunter have fled the city dwellings to go kill a deer.

This is one smart deer. She came to city to avoid the Hunters from the City that were stalking her in the country. Very smart.

Well the deer wasn’t that lucky. The vet came from the Toronto Zoo with a tranquillizer gun… and shot the deer. But it takes time for a tranquillizer to take affect… and the deer said “I am out of here!” – up she bolted and away from the scene… likely to drop soon.

BUT this is TORONTO. And a good old Metro Cop pulled his handy Tazer and blam… the deer came down. City cops use the Tazer usually when the person they are pursuing is about to pull out their weapon and do the Cop some damage.

Hey – Dummy – it is a Doe – a White Tailed Deer… it doesn’t have a gun!

It is about now that my Saskatchewan Hunting Friends are rolling over and nearly killing themselves with the humor out of Toronto.

But it may open a new problem for the Wildlife Officers that nab poachers and bad dudes that hunt illegally.

Who would have thought that a Tazer could be used to do a deer in? This is amazing.

In the future should the deer be on “Posted Land”… a Tazer job could make the deer “come along” off the property… so that it could die a proper and legal death on another piece of property.

Who would have thought?

Can you imagine what P.E.T.A. is doing right now? I am sure they will speak before the day is up… or within the week.

But the story isn’t over yet. The tranquillized and Tazered deer is sleeping his city adventure off for a few days – being watched for side affects to what they nailed her with.

Then they will kindly and carefully take her to the country where she will be released to start her run again from the nasty, good old boys that are waiting for her… to Kerblam!

Seems like a huge waste of money this morning. Many police cruisers, a number of cops, people late for work as they stopped to gawk, and then one vet that was called in….

I know at least three good old boys in our area that would have been their in a heart beat to take Bambi’s mommy home with them. Why didn’t they call?

Hey! It is Toronto. Deer Alert! Hunter Alert! Go figure!!!!!

Today’s Blog Post

The Liberation Treatment of MS – WOW!

The TV Program last evening was amazing. It was all about a treatment that is being used by Dr. Paolo Zamboni. Dr. Zamboni has found a treatment that appears to be working on every one of his MS Patients. With it their MS conditions are being reversed and they are virtually cured!

No kidding! If the MS is caught in the early stages it can be “cured”!

If this is true then millions of people world wide will be set free or a death sentence. I know dozens or people that have MS. It is very common in my world and in Canada.

A quote from the W5 Web Site states the following…
“Dr. Paolo Zamboni, a former vascular surgeon and professor at the University of Ferrara in northern Italy, began asking questions about the debilitating condition a decade ago, when his wife Elena, now 51, was diagnosed with MS.

Watching his wife Elena struggle with the fatigue, muscle weakness and visual problems of MS led Zamboni to begin an intense personal search for the cause of her disease. He found that scientists who had studied the brains of MS patients had noticed higher levels of iron in their brain, not accounted for by age. The iron deposits had a unique pattern, often forming in the core of the brain, clustered around the veins that normally drain blood from the head. No one had ever fully explained this phenomenon, considering the excess iron a toxic byproduct of the MS itself.

Dr. Zamboni wondered if the iron came from blood improperly collecting in the brain. Using Doppler ultrasound, he began examining the necks of MS patients and made an extraordinary finding. Almost 100 per cent of the patients had a narrowing, twisting or outright blockage of the veins that are supposed to flush blood from the brain. He then checked these veins in healthy people, and found none of these malformations. Nor did he find these blockages in those with other neurological conditions.”
End quote.

The W5 Program is a credible presentation. Its investigation is thorough and will expose a fraud – and has done that well over the years. No doubt here that the W5 crew were trying hard to point out the potential fraud here also. I mean HOW CAN ONE MAN DISCOVER THE CURE THAT NO ONE ELSE HAS FOUND TO DATE?

It appears that the results of what Dr. Paolo Zamboni has found is very real.

What is the answer…? It is a Plumbing Problem in the person’s neck… a vein returning the blood to the rest of the body from the head is restricted… and when opened by an angioplasty procedure… the improvement is immediate. People are given their lives back again.

I listened to the program over and over again – on my computer.

What it doesn’t say is that advanced stages of MS, where much damage has been done, are not necessarily reversible. The damage done by the build up of the iron in the brain may not be able to be changed.

But who knows? In today’s advancements in all the areas they have gone, there may well be an answer for the reverse of the conditions that each person has.

I can only hope that there will be a real answer soon.

Be sure to look at the Link posted below. The report is very powerful.

Next week there is a more scientific report that will be published and released for the medical world and the rest of us to read.

Today many people are waking up to a possible new hope, no more of the horrible tingling in their hands and feet, their strength could come back again and tiredness will evaporate, they will not face the loss of vision and all the visual difficulties that will possibly come their way, plus the early loss of life.

There is a new hope. And I hold my breath along with you – hoping that this is true!

This is a good day!

Do you think maybe that Dr. Paolo Zamboni might receive the Nobel Peace Prize in medicine for this one? I do.

Today I am off to the Christmas Treasures Craft Show at Rhema Christian School. If you are in Peterborough - I would love for you to drop by.  The school is at Parkhill Road East and Televisions Road.

The Santa featured here is my new "Recession Santa" - as you can see he has lost his belly.

I look forward to hearing from you!

AddenDUM - 845 PM…
The first part was posted early in the day... here is the rest of the story... DUM!

As my wife and I drove home from the sale at about 4 PM - we began to laugh... We had just spent the last SIX hours at the Christmas Treasures Craft Sale at the Rhema Christian School. Add to that I spent one hour there on Friday PM setting up.

I said to her... "Let's see. I spent One Hour Friday PM and then adding to that Six Hours today... that makes 7 hours total. We paid $25.00 for the Table Privilege. And we made how much? $26.00? For Seven Hours work at the sale. We made $1.00! That is 14 Cents an Hour for SEVEN hours.”

Then we laughed again. We have never had such a disastrous sale ever! Too Funny!

Hundreds of people came – and just looked.

I checked with other crafters and the same was true. The lady at the table next to ours packed up and left 2 hours early. Other people just shook their heads and vowed they wouldn’t come back again.
Alida and I just laughed.

At home…
We pulled into the driveway and parked the van. I began to unload the goods.

I pulled the heavy carvings from the van one by one. Three of them were full logs that were re-created as Snow Men… really heavy Snow Men! I placed them on my front porch to become our own ornaments.

I turned and at that moment a neighbour walked up to me and asked if the Snow Men were for sale. She asked the price and I told her “$50 each for neighbors.”

She responded, “I’ll take these TWO! I love them. I will be back in a second with the money.”

My mouth dropped open wide. I three minutes I had made $100. Now at that rate I was making $2000 in one hour! I have never had that good of sale in my life! Imagine! From the Worst Sale to the Best Sale in less than an hour.

It appears that the other Snow Man may go quickly too.

I know now that Rhema Christian School is a not a cool place to sell stuff that I make. Everyone loves it… everyone wants to talk about it… but nobody buys anything. I think many are stinking rich… so they don’t need to buy anything… or their houses are already too full of stuff.

But then I heard from the Fellow Crafter today that they had been at the Northview Church’s Craft Sale last weekend… and few of the folks that they had spoken to had sold much of anything. Lots of people came and looked and talked – but few bought.

HEY – guess what – this is a Recession… and people are being VERY CAREFUL – VERY, VERY careful.

Now if you need a Great Christmas Gift… have I got a deal for you… in fact I have a WHOLE LOT OF DEALS FOR YOU. Would you please BUY SOMETHING???!

Today’s Blog Post

The Homework Virus

Last Sunday Evening I arrived back in Peterborough at about 8 PM. We had been in Ottawa for a few days. And while we were there I had received a call from my Granddaughter – she needed help with her homework… and Grandpa is the one that she wanted to help her draw a certain picture.

When I arrived at her home it was almost 9 PM. The Homework project was laid out of the front room floor. All the pieces of her homework were ready. She had already prepared a ton of work that had to be glued into place for the final presentation on Monday morning.

This project took Mom, Dad, Emma and Grandpa Lincoln to get it all done – late Sunday evening. I had messed up the process by being away all weekend. The piece that I was doing for her wasn’t ready until just before the assembly.

THIS IS the HOMEWORK NIGHTMARE… or HN.

Right now Canada and other places in the world are suffering from the Flu entitled H1N1.

Families across the world are suffering from a greater problem called the HN – the Homework Nightmare.

In Calgary, Tom Milley and his wife Shelli are lawyers. With some creativity they have brokered a deal/contract with their children’s School Board that now means their kids will have little or no Homework.

From the Star Phoenix in Saskatoon, Sask. it is reported their kids…
“Spencer, 11, and sister Brittany, 10, could spend up to three hours a night completing math problems and word lists with the help of their parents.” End quote.

Tom and Shelli both were getting their Grade 6 & 7 all over again working along side their kids doing the homework with them.

I am convinced that the HN Virus is an affliction given to Parents so that they will now re-learn their own homework that THEY DIDN’T DO when they were young.

BUT it seems silly to have a kid doing 3 hours of homework while in Grade 6.

In my granddaughter’s case – it was the whole weekend… and needed three adults to help her.

Incidentally – WE – as a team of Homework Doers got a very high A+ when Emma presented her project on “Wilfrid Laurier” in French to here Social Studies Class. Wilfrid Laurier is the dude on our Blue Five Dollar Bills.

I never ever got A+ in any subject when I was in Grade 6… But I did this time! Wahoo. And now I know about Wilfrid Laurier!

BTW I love doing Homework with the kids…. It seems to prevent the early stages of Dementia that my other friends are suffering from.

There is lots of discussion on the issue of HN… and how it is affecting families and their quality of life.

This past week I taught an art class in a public school for two mornings. The first morning I assigned the kids Homework to draw their own hand. Groan… “We all ready have Homework!” was their reply.

My response was, “But this is fun!” About two thirds of the kids did the project… and they were good!

As I drove from my granddaughter’s home… I thought long and hard about Homework. I asked my self what I was now doing in this area of HN.

This past week I have been doing HN each night to better myself. As I looked at it – I have tons of work to get done. I will be marked on it this weekend… and the next… and this Christmas as I do the Wood Carvings.

One wood carving has to be done today. It is for Hunter Smith and it is Hunter Smith. Hunter is dieing because of cancer and the wood carving is planned to be a blessing to him and his wife this Christmas. My neighbor has ordered this one. It has to be done today – because Hunter may not be here at Christmas time.

There are another six Teddy Bears that MUST BE ready this next week. Ordered a while ago… now need to be delivered to England and all parts of Canada! Oh boy!

So THREE CHEERS for Tom and Shelli… I think. But Homework is Fun!

Today’s Blog Post
I am reprinting the contents of a great email that two of my friends sent my way. It is hilarious and apparently true…however there is debate over where it happened. Checking it out you will see that it happened in Michigan rather than Pennsylvania – to a Stephen Tvedten – rather than Ryan.

But the story is just too good not to give it to you in this blog. Ryan and Stephen – both of you are great writers as well as whoever creatively sent to all of us. It has lightened my load today. Enjoy!
(Thanks Marion and Terry)

“The Dam” – either by Stephen Tvedten or Ryan DeVries
This is an actual letter sent to a man named Ryan DeVries regarding a pond on his property. It was sent by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Quality, State of Pennsylvania . This guy's response is hilarious, but read The State's letter before you get to the response letter.

State of Pennsylvania 's letter to Mr. DeVries:

SUBJECT: DEQ
File No.97-59-0023; T11N; R10W, Sec 20; Lycoming County

Dear Mr. DeVries:

It has come to the attention of the Department of Environmental Quality that there has been recent unauthorized activity on the above referenced parcel of property. You have been certified as the legal landowner and/or contractor who did the following unauthorized activity: Construction and maintenance of two wood debris dams across the outlet stream of Spring Pond.

A permit must be issued prior to the start of this type of activity. A review of the Department's files shows that no permits have been issued Therefore, the Department has determined that this activity is in violation of Part 301, Inland Lakes and Streams, of the Natural Resource and Environmental Protection Act, Act 451 of the Public Acts of 1994, being sections 324.30101 to 324.30113 of the Pennsylvania Compiled Laws, annotated.

The Department has been informed that one or both of the dams partially fail ed during a recent rain event, causing debris and flooding at downstream locations. We find that dams of this nature are inherently hazardous and cannot be permitted. The Department therefore orders you to cease and desist all activities at this location, and to restore the stream to a free-flow condition by removing all wood and brush forming the dams from the stream channel. All restoration work shall be completed no later than January 31, 2007.

Please notify this office when the restoration has been completed so that a follow-up site inspection may be scheduled by our staff. Failure to comply with this request or any further unauthorized activity on the site may result in this case being referred for elevated enforcement action..

We anticipate and would appreciate your full cooperation in this matter. Please feel free to contact me at this office if you have any questions.

Sincerely,
David L. Price
District Representative and Water Management Division.

Here is the actual response sent back by Mr. DeVries:

Re: DEQ File
No. 97-59-0023; T11N; R10W, Sec. 20; Lycoming County

Dear Mr. Price,

Your certified letter dated 12/17/06 has been handed to me to respond to. I am the legal landowner but not the Contractor at 2088 Dagget Lane , Trout Run, Pennsylvania.

A couple of beavers are in the (State unauthorized) process of constructing and maintaining two wood 'debris' dams across the outlet stream of my Spring Pond. While I did not pay for, authorize, nor supervise their dam project, I think they would be highly offended that you call their skillful use of natures building materials 'debris.'

I would like to challenge your department to attempt to emulate their dam project any time and/or any place you choose. I believe I can safely state there is no way you could ever match their dam skills, their dam resourcefulness, their dam ingenuity, their dam persistence, their dam determination and/or their dam work ethic.

These are the beavers/contractors you are seeking. As to your request, I do not think the beavers are aware that they must first fill out a dam permit prior to the start of this type of dam activity.

My first dam question to you is:
(1) Are you trying to discriminate against my Spring Pond Beavers, or
(2) do you require all beavers throughout this State to conform to said dam request?

If you are not discriminating against these particular beavers, through the Freedom of Information Act, I request completed copies of all those other applicable beaver dam permits that have been issued. (Perhaps we will see if there really is a dam violation of Part 301, Inland Lakes and Streams, of the Natural Resource and Environmental Protection Act, Act 451 of the Public Acts of 1994, being sections 324.30101 to 324.30113 of the Pennsylvania Compiled Laws, annotated.)

I have several dam concerns. My first dam concern is, aren't the beavers entitled to legal representation? The Spring Pond Beavers are financially destitute and are unable to pay for said representation -- so the State will have to provide them with a dam lawyer.

The Department's dam concern that either one or both of the dams failed during a recent rain event, causing flooding, is proof that this is a natural occurrence, which the Department is required to protect. In other words, we should leave the Spring Pond Beavers alone rather than harassing them and calling them dam names.

If you want the dammed stream 'restored' to a dam free-flow condition please contact the beavers -- but if you are going to arrest them, they obviously did not pay any attention to your dam letter, they being unable to read English.

In my humble opinion, the Spring Pond Beavers have a right to build their unauthorized dams as long as the sky is blue, the grass is green and water flows downstream. They have more dam rights than I do to live and enjoy Spring Pond. If the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection lives up to its name, it should protect the natural resources (Beavers) and the environment (Beavers' Dams).

So, as far as the beavers and I are concerned, this dam case can be referred for more elevated enforcement action right now. Why wait until 1/31/2007? The Spring Pond Beavers may be under the dam ice by then and there will be no way for you or your dam staff to contact/harass them.

In conclusion, I would like to bring to your attention to a real environmental quality, health, problem in the area It is the bears! Bears are actually defecating in our woods. I definitely believe you should be persecuting the defecating bears and leave the beavers alone. If you are going to investigate the beaver dam, watch your dam step! The bears are not careful where they dump!

Being unable to comply with your dam request, and being unable to contact you on your dam answering machine, I am sending this response to your dam office.

THANK YOU,

RYAN DEVRIES

Today’s Blog Post

Spatchcock – Huh?
The word doesn’t make any sense. When I read it and then pronounced it – it made even less sense.

English is like that for some of us. I can only imagine what happens to my friends that are trying to learn English and its many weird words.

Okay the Word for Today is “Spatchcock”.

Now apparently I knew this word before I ever read this word – which was this week at 65 years of age!

The word is so odd that it simply invites one to dig deeper.

To put it in its simplest definition means to cut the turkey or chicken down the backbone, remove the back bone, and break the bird until it is flat. The bird is then cooked in this flat position very fast compared to the regular way of the whole bird. A twelve pound turkey can be done in a little over One Hour!

I started wondering if the guys that pick up road kill might have used this word to describe the birds they pick up from the road. It sounds like “SPLAT” when the vehicle hits the bird.

Nope that wasn’t it.

It seems to have come from old Ireland. The “Languagehat” folk state that… quote…
"abbreviation of a dispatch cock, an Irish dish upon any sudden occasion. It is a hen just killed from the roost, or yard, and immediately skinned, split, and broiled." End quote.

“Spatchcock” is shortened from a “dispatched cock” – or a murdered bird. The addition of the words “upon any sudden occasion”. That is kind of like Road Kill – isn’t it?

The reason that I stated earlier that I know the word before reading the word… is simple. I watched my Grandma Kirk, Emma was her name, dispatch more than one cock when we arrived from the city.

That moment was something that I will never forget.

Grandma would ask us if we would like to go along with her. Then she would pick up her large butcher knife… which was just under the size of a machete used in many parts of the world. She then would wipe the large butcher knife on her apron and start toward the door looking back to see who would follow her.

Every grandkid would drop what they were doing and follow closely. Wherever the chickens were – was our destination.

The stupid birds were quietly eating – pecking away at the ground for seeds. If they were not where she wanted them Grandma Kirk would simply take a handful of grain with her and throw it out so the chickens would come.

In among the chickens were the proud roosters that took charge of the grain eating.

As the chickens were busy eating their new find of grain Grandma would quickly swoop down and trap one busy rooster to the ground. A loud squawk followed as the rooster flapped his wings furiously to get free. Her other hand grabbed is legs and then she dropped the body so he was hanging upside down – head struggling to see where she was taking him.

It was about 20 feet away to the wood pile… and the wood chopping block.

The rooster hung in her left hand… he large butcher knife in her right. Then Grandma looked around at us… and grinned. She placed the roosters head on the block and as she did he flared his wings… given a warning squawk…. The large knife went up above her shoulder and swish through the air to meet the top of the chopping block….Thump!

There was a burst of air from the flapping wings… and then she did the next thing we knew she would do… she tossed the headless rooster toward whoever was standing nearest… bravest… silliest and the headless rooster came rushing toward me… with blood spurting profusely.

Dispatched Cock – now Spatchcock.

At the end of the Grandma’s murdering episode… we all enjoyed the roast rooster.

I hope you can use this one in scrabble!
