When
your Grandson gets excited so do you – Geocaching – Whoa!
I
was on my Facebook yesterday making my routine survey of Friends and what they
are doing around the world. It is a kind
of a “Start of the Day” and “End of the Day” thing with me. My Grandson Clifford was on as well and began
a conversation excited about his new interest… and insisted that I would love
this new thing he was doing.
Oh
boy – here we go… Grandpa following an excited Grandson. I just finished an
outdoor adventure with him entitled football.
What could this one be?
I
joined Facebook on July 29, 2007 after my two daughters prompted me to get with
it! Now I am following and connected with
about 1100 friends from around the world.
Yesterday
I jumped into something new for me but not new in our world. It was because of
my Grandson. Where Facebook started in February
2004, this new adventure for me was first ‘launched’ or ‘played’ on March 3,
2000.
Now
officially on November 11, 2012 I jumped into another new thing – “Geocaching”.
I am now a follower of and participant in Geocaching and the world is opening
to me almost too fast! I am a ‘Geocacher’ – or maybe I should say a Geocache
Explorer/Detective/Hiker/Treasure-hunter!!!
My
older friends are still scratching their heads about Email and Facebooking –
what the heck is Geocaching??? Well Geocaching is an outdoor activity filled
with new adventure where you can get out of the house and head for a place
where someone has hidden a cache of ‘something’ – somewhere that ordinary
people would never see or guess.
Here
is what Wikipedia offers… quote…
“Geocaching is an outdoor
recreational activity in which the participants use a Global Positioning System(GPS) receiver or mobile device and other navigational techniques to
hide and seek containers, called "geocaches" or "caches",
anywhere in the world.
A typical cache is a small waterproof container containing
a logbook where the geocacher enters the date they found it and signs it with
their established code name. Larger containers such as plastic storage
containers (Tupperware or
similar) or ammunition boxes can also contain items for trading, usually toys
or trinkets of little value. Geocaching shares many aspects with benchmarking, trigpointing, orienteering, treasure-hunting, letterboxing, and waymarking.
Geocaches are currently placed in
over 200 countries around the world and on all seven continents, including Antarctica, and the International Space Station. After
nearly 13 years of activity there are over 1.9 million active geocaches
published on various websites. There are over 5 million geocachers
worldwide.”

So
how did I get involved? I clicked on to http://www.geocaching.com/ then I read
what the possibilities were and what you can do with it.
One
thing that caught my interest immediately was that my Cell Phone Model is
capable to work with Geocaching. One or
two clicks on my Cell Phone and a Geocaching Ap was downloaded and installed. I
kind of held my breath on this one – not having a clue what I was about to get…
but before I let my breath out my Cell Phone was ready to go… waiting for me to
give it instructions.
You
are so right Clifford! I absolutely love
this new adventure that I am about to take. This afternoon Grandma Lincoln and
I will be heading for our first Geocache from the look of it. At least two are
very close to us and about another gazillion are only a short distance away.
I
have worked with and even taught the use of the old fashioned compass. I developed games for it and loved the
adventure of this kind of activity. Now
I can still keep doing this in my old age!!! Wahoo!
Thank
you Clifford for making Grandpa Lincoln very happy today. I can’t wait to go along with you as well.
Sheesh I feel like I am 17 again!!!! I think your other Grandpa – Grandpa Lindsay
is going to love this one too. It will
be fun taking him along on an adventure of Geocaching as well.
