Scooping out Trout at the Fishing Derby 2013

On the front page of one of our local newspapers, Clifford Skarstedt captured and published the best photo ever!  Totally amazing.  The photo he snapped was of an Osprey swooping after scooping a trout from the Canal below the Lift Locks in Peterborough.

Here it is…Peterborough Examiner

Now why is that amazing?

Well it was last Saturday and they were hundreds of young fisher-people dipping lines into the water of the Canal. They were doing this as part of the Greenwing Event held every year by Ducks Unlimited for the kids of our community.

D.U. loads hundreds of Trout into the Canal, and then after registration of each young angler, the trout are pulled out one by one.  Each trout (fish) represents a potential prize as they have been tagged by organizers.

The excitement is so great you can feel it.

In the midst of the excitement and the waiting for a bite, the Osprey swooped in to show the kids how easy it was to catch a trout.

Clifford that shot was amazing!  You win the best catch of the day – without a doubt.

Our local tournament did have some controversy however.  A man and his teenage son swooped in also, before the tournament began, and caught the biggest fish named “Walter” – before the registration had begun.  They did it too early – and their catch couldn’t be qualified.  But they had caught the biggest fish – the winner – and couldn’t win. Arggh!

Boo to the two!  No buddy likes a cheater.

Thank You to Ducks Unlimited for a great day!

Thank you Clifford the wonderful photos – we all love them!

Addendum to my Post... Photo of Walter the Fish that was caught too early... story here

The Good Fight vs Bad Fight – on the world’s highest mountain

No sooner did I complete the Posting yesterday on this Blog about “The Good Fight” – written by Les and Leslie Parrott, and then I discovered another great example of a place that it could be well used.

The Place – Mount Everest in Nepal.  The people, professional “Mountain Climbers” and their Sherpas… at the 7,450 metre - 24,500 foot level on the world’s highest mountain.

It is a classic example of people getting into a fight that could turn lethal.  And it is also a good example of really stupid people doing really stupid things.

I side with the Sherpas on this one. The ego building and ego oozing professional “Mountain Climbers” are simply too stupid for words.

As I mentioned yesterday and as the Parrotts point out there are “Bad Fights” and “Good Fights”.

This reported fight was a Bad Fight on the part of the “Mountain Climbers” – in my humble opinion and based upon what I have read.  You decide by reading this article “Climbers and guides in “fight” on Everest”.

If you can’t get the article I will sum it up for you from what I understand.

The Sherpas were going about their business rigging more ropes and support for the climbers to go further.  They asked/told/instructed the “Mountain Climbers” to stay put.  The “Mountain Climbers” didn’t do that, they decided to climb on, a new route, on their own… without ropes...

DUH! Isn’t that dumb or what.  But as I place quotation marks around the two words “Mountain Climbers” I am emphasizing the fact they are more special than the silly Sherpas – in their minds at least.  They will get the credit in other parts of the world for their great feat of climbing the mountain(s). They hold the records so to speak… but the lowly Sherpa climbed it ahead of time making it ready for the GREAT MOUNTAIN CLIMBER TO SET A WORLD RECORD!

Double DUH!

There was a fight – yes.  It happened high on the mountain.  It happened because the Sherpas were hurt when the dumb, know it all mountain climbing experts climbed above the Sherpas and knocked kicked loose ice that hit the hard working Sherpa below. The Sherpas were angry.

Later the Napalese stormed the expert’s tent and pelted the tents with rocks. At which time my imagination kicks in and the angry know-it-all “Mountain Climbers” came out to take on the “stupid locals”.

There were many punches and kicks exchanged. The observer that witnessed the brouhaha stated that "It was terrifying to watch - they nearly got killed,"

Ego is a terrible part of us. It demands that we let everyone know we will not back down. We will not be told. We will not listen to any instruction or good advice from others – because, you see, we are smarter and just better than you are(they are).

Ego comes out in the “mountain climbers” when they start thinking of their great accomplishments.  The article reported that – quote – “Ueli Steck, a Swiss national who holds climbing records, and Simone Moro of Italy, who has climbed the world's highest peak four times, were approaching the 7,470-metre (24,500 feet) Camp Three on Saturday when the bust-up occurred” end quote.

What these two experts forgot was that each time they set a record, the Sherpas helped them. The locals knew better than they did – but when it is set as a record, the “mountain climbers” got the credit.

Please note that I have removed the caps from mountain and climbers.  They fell down in my mind.

Ego is dangerous at 24,500 feet on the side of the world’s highest mountain.

Ego is also dangerous in a marriage, in parenting and every aspect of our life.  Ego makes it impossible to bend or yield – we must always be right because our Ego demands it.

“The Good Fight” by Les and Leslie Parrott does a great job in explaining how we get into “Bad Fights” and the potential for disaster.

BUT – and it is a Big but… I doubt that stupid, professional, mountain climbers would accept the book from me. I have considered mailing them each a copy… but a poor Sherpa would have to carry it up the mountain and down again.

I know some men in their marriage and homes that act like professional, mountain climbers… (you can add the word stupid if you like to).  They treat their kids as if they were stupid Sherpas.  They treat their wives as if they are lower than a Sherpa.  And these husbands/fathers are stupid.

Sorry guys… if you are wounded with my comments about your actions and reactions to your family (or Sherpas)… deal with it. Buy the book and read it.

I know one thing about the outcome to a fight on a high mountain.  It is likely best to say you’re sorry and then descend quickly.  Trying to push on to make your point will likely find you at the bottom of a really deep cliff because your Sherpa is not doing what you told them to do… mind you they were doing what they were supposed to do to keep the family safe.

Deal with it – buy the book!

The Good Fight: How Conflict Can Bring You Closer

I begin my Blog post today with this simple note…

Dear Les and Leslie Parrott,
“The Good Fight” – what a fantastic book you have written! Amazing – really.

I am hoping that every one of friends read this book, and then buy copies for their Kids and Grandkids.  I am totally blown away by your “The Good Fight”.  I have read and re-read this book and will be savoring it for a long while to come.

Murray Lincoln
 – retired pastor, counselor, husband, father, grandfather and friend

Now my friends know that I will deal with just about anything in my Blog Posts, but I have yet to deal with the Fights that my wife and I get into – sometimes.  I haven`t been brave enough to tell my friends that Alida and I have some pretty tough tiffs at times.

Why would I ever tell anyone that their pastor, that they have admired, loved and looked up to has quarrels with his wife!?!  I mean they all think I’m nearly perfect – don’t they?  They know she is!!!

Well for 35 years of ministry I have given that appearance I am sure – but it wasn’t and isn’t the truth.  Alida and I had disagreements just like everyone else does over the years.  Yep – at times real humdingers.  And at times we still have them.  What retired couple doesn’t?

But our fights have not been “Bad Fights” for the most part – we have had “Good Fights”. But I never knew the difference until I read what Les and Leslie Parrott have written.  I understand better now than ever.  What we have is good.  What we have done in our marriage of 46 years is healthy – even our fighting has been healthy.

But there were times when it was not so healthy. We did have “Bad Fights”.  But amazingly what Les and Leslie have explained in some of their “how to” sections, I realize now that the tools that we worked with were good.  This book has a good feeling to it after I listened to what they have said.

But as a Pastor and man that has married hundreds of couples over the years, I have witnessed some horrific scenes in the married life that followed that wonderful day they said “I do”.  A whole lot more marriages than I like to think have evaporated when “Bad Fights” became the norm.

As I read over this book I thought of all the couples that could have benefited from the thoughts collected here.

I have about six weddings lined up for this summer where I will be officiating at their ceremonies. After reading “The Good Fight” I will be recommending that each couple get their own copy!

It was ‘sobering’ to say the least… when my wife one time stated something flatly to a group of young ladies.  She was speaking to them about marriage and gave a personal testimony what it was like to be married to a minister (me).  Out of her mouth came the simple truth, “I have never considered divorce… we do not believe in that.  But I have considered murder…”

Oh boy!  Yikes!

The next person that will be reading this book is my wife.

(Road washout in 2011 flooding - near Brandon, Manitoba)
Thinking of the Saskatchewan and Manitoba 2013 Floods that are coming

Thinking back to the last few weeks and our trip across Saskatchewan and Alberta there is much that stands out, many memories to sort through.

The first thing that hit us was the mountains of snow that were standing on more than half of the province.  Soon that snow will melt into torrents of water pouring into small streams and run offs. It will pour in to larger rivers and eventually a majority will go into the Assiniboine River.

The Assiniboine River then leaves Saskatchewan where it pours into the State of North Dakota and specifically Minot, a vibrant shopping city for Canadians.

Then the usually lazy river heads north again into Manitoba where it will grow even bigger, swelling over its banks in many places flooding the farm land around it in the valley areas.

The now raging and fast moving Assiniboine will meet the very fast moving Red River coming up from the south of the American border.  And that all happens right downtown, in the City Centre of Winnipeg.  Two rivers meet and bring a whole bunch of water from everywhere to the heart of the city.

When the different tribes of Aboriginal folk gathered at the forks of the two rivers for their meetings long ago, then went home again… they never dreamed that the white man would squat on that property and then build a very large and expensive city on that very spot.

Owning property near the banks of the Assiniboine or Red Rivers is perhaps cool and even elite during other times of the year… but not so much when the flood comes.

I used to fish with my cousin on the banks of the Assiniboine River near Oak Lake, Manitoba.  In the summer the Northern Pike will bite just about anything that moves in the river.  I caught one big fish by swinging an old red and white spoon (a fishing lure) on a piece of white string. Nothing fancy about the fishing tools but it worked. The river is full of great fish.

But now few people are thinking of what will happen with the fishing this year.  They are only thinking of what will happen to their land and their homes.  And I am afraid that many will be too close to disaster for any comfort coming their way – too soon.

Driving through the prairie again reminded me of the potential danger that is there all around and what people have had to do to stay alive and make it a place for their homes.

The people of the prairie are amazing.

While we face our own flooding problems in some parts of Ontario this year, I am thinking of my friends in Saskatchewan. Many thoughts and things to ponder.

I HATE TERRORISTS and miss my Saskatoon Berry Jam

I hate Terrorists!  There I said it. Oh I know I am not supposed to hate anyone.  Dislike maybe – but Hate – no.  Hate kills my inner person… Dislike just keeps me away from stuff that bothers me.

I think I disliked Terrorist up to Monday 22, 2013 at around 12:10 PM.  At that moment in time everything stood still and everyone around me began to move in slow motion. Aghhhaaaa!  Now I hate the Terrorists – completely, absolutely and overwhelmingly HATE them!!

It all happened in Regina, Saskatchewan’s air terminal.  We had checked in our bags and received confirmation that we were ready to go. There was no weather delay, mechanical problems with the aircraft, nor problems with the Pilot and Crew not showing up. It was all a go.

Along with us we were pulling our “carry-on” bags which were to be stowed above our seats in the small luggage department.

We approached the security area where white plastic containers were available to place all of your personal items along with the “carry-on” bags.  The white plastic containers were then threaded through the X-Ray machine where the stern looking, anti-terrorist, officiate looking guard searched for explosives and contraband of all sorts.

In my opinion, these highly trained individuals once tried working as greeters at a Wall Mart but failed the exam because they were too dower and sour.

While looking directly at both my wife and me, then asking the same stern question, “Do you have any liquids or jells over 150 mls in your bags?”

“No” was our simple answer.

“No” from me because I had my computer and the other electronic toys stashed safely and you don’t put liquids near your computer!

“No” from my wife was alright, just, and even “righteous” as it was delivered to the nail swallowing lady behind the conveyor belt. And my wife definitely looks less like a Terrorist than I do!

While I was pulled off to the side for a “squeal test” with the electronic wand, by the big guy with the uniform, asked to remove my shoes, and then felt all over by his less than sexy hands… my wife stood waiting for her bags to come through. There was a cluster of people now looking at the X-Ray screen.  Good Lord NO! They found something in her bag. I broke into a sweat… and the big guy touching me all over could sense the fear oozing from my pores… and he went over me again, this time squeezing my shoeless sock feet.

I limped over to my wife and the questioning officer after the big dude let me go.

Oh no… they found that my wife had stashed her two – one litre jars of Saskatoon Berry Jam in her carry-on.  They had her bag opened and the stuff all laid out for all the other passengers to see as they walked by quietly shaking their heads… thinking… “Am I ever glad they caught that old lady before she blew up our aircraft!”

My wife was apologizing to the uniformed officer and me.  Then she asked what we should do.  He told us that we might be able to take it downstairs to the ticket counter, pay the extra fee of $20 for the more than one bag fee.

Another dear guard stopped this conversation in midair however when he asked, “Would you open this pouch please?” while he held up the small lace container, “There is a knife in here with the nail clippers.”

My wife in a slightly elevated tone told him flatly that “We arrived with that same package from Toronto, why wouldn’t it go through here?”  The guy seemed pleased his crew had outdone the big city crew that had missed this lethal weapon riveted to the nail clippers. Her comment only heightened his deep pleasure earned at that moment.

My wife turned to me and with pleading eyes asked me to take the carry-on downstairs and check it in. So I did.

I pushed through the 30 plus people that were collecting in a long line for their turn to be frisked by the officiates and power people.  Over to an elevator, pushed the button and waited for the slow doors to open and then close. The line waiting was growing longer.

At the ticket counter the lady looked at my ticket and the bag shaking her head.  “I can’t get this bag on that flight, it is too late, and they have already loaded the bags. It won’t make it.”

It was then at that very moment that I made the cataclysmic decision and in my mind I went from “DISLIKE” to pure “HATE” for every ding dang Terrorist in the world.  Beside that half full garbage can I unzipped that stupid bag, reached in for the two litre jars of Saskatoon Berry Jam, extracted the contraband and through them in with a THUD!!!

I then ran to the slow elevator slightly out of breath and in a sweat.

The line upstairs had now grown to over 45 people all pushing slowly ahead. These folk were heading to Calgary – NOT TORONTO!  Their flight was in another half hour. I looked through the security glass and past the X-Ray machinery, the fat dude, the sour lady and the rest of the security folk.

Oh no!  The Toronto aircraft was being loaded now!

There was no way that I was about to stand in line again, be patted down, and still have the bag X-Rayed again!  But no… and yes… I had to go through the whole routine all over again.

Without any semblance of order, and avoiding all the nice-ities of the dear prairie folk, I pushed past 42 people, cut into line in front of a Calgary-ian and put my bag on to the X-Ray conveyor belt.  I then stepped through the beeper machine, set off the lights again, and prepared for the next big sexless feel up by the guy with the electronic stick – who by the way was a new guy that hadn’t suspected or inspected me yet.

The whole crew was now aware of this red faced, potential Terrorist that had been carrying the contraband jars of jam. They all looked at me I am sure.  The 45 or so passengers that I cut in on and pushed aside were glaring at me as well.

And there lovingly looking at me with some concern was my dear wife, sitting and waiting patiently for her hubby.

I finally cleared the Security Cluster and the angry mob of Calgary passengers. I slumped down beside my wife as she looked at the non-checked in carry-on… I stated flatly, “I through the Jam in the garbage can.  They couldn’t take the bag – it was too late…”

My tone, my red face, my internal disgust for Terrorist around the world was enough for her to realize that she had better not ask if I was okay! I slowly simmered and waited for our seat boarding to take place. The back half of the aircraft had been loaded – we were next.

I love Saskatoon Berry Jam. We paid good dollars for that much and were going to share it with others. It was a wonderful souvenir of Saskatchewan.  But as our aircraft lifted from the runway I asked myself, “HOW IN THE HECK CAN YOU BLOW UP AN AIRPLANE WITH SASKATOON BERRY JAM?????!

God… I Hate Terrorists… and I missed my JAM this morning.

Coming Back Home – with my family and friends in Saskatchewan and Alberta – Part Three

Whoa!  It has been one week since I posted to this blog.  I can’t believe it. One week without spilling out my words. Needless my mind is full of many wonderful memories that have taken place over these past two weeks.

We have traveled 3000 kms and driven a huge circle with 6 stopovers across Saskatchewan and Alberta.

We have met many, many relatives and friends – and connected with dozens of new friends. It has been a trip of a life time.

In Calgary at one reunion of the Lincoln Cousins I came together with folk that I have not seen for many years. In one case one of my cousins and I had not seen each other for 53 years!  Hard to believe but true!  She and I knew about each other but have always lived on opposite sides of the country – for a whole lifetime.

Regular blogging will begin in a day or two… when I sort out all that I have taken in and mulled over. After I think through the wonderful thoughts that have collected in my memory bank I will be able to write better.

Finally… a big surprise happened last evening.

We began our first adventure with a birthday party for my sister-in-law Bobbie at the “Prema Pasta” in Regina – with wonderful homemade pasta dishes.

Last evening we again met at “Prema Pasta” with our good friends from Peterborough, Ontario… Roy and Debbie Craft.  They are in Saskatchewan for the Graduation of their son-in-law Mike.  We had a ball meeting with our friends over great food and a wonderful time together.

Coming Back Home – with my family in Saskatchewan – Part Two

As we have traveled across the Province of Saskatchewan it is amazing to see the amount of snow that this part of our country has received.  It is mountain high in some places.  And it is hard to believe.

Other parts of Canada have received a lot of snow as well but the situation is not nearly as grave as it is here.  The officials are holding meeting after meeting getting ready for potentially large flooding problems across the Province.  It is very serious to say the least.

The problem is that when the melt takes place it is going to be fast and the water has very few places to go as it drains away. The land is basically flat with the very old water ways in place. These water ways drain the normal amounts of water but have not seen this amount of potential water for a long, long time.

Now add to that the fact when the snow is melting it will likely also be the rainy season starting… which is much more water on top of what will be on the flat land.  It is probable that many roads will be washed away and entire transportation routes will be destroyed.  Not a prophecy but rather a report from some emergency measure folk that are planning for the worst case scenarios.

Washouts happened in 2011 and major sections of Canada’s main highway simply went out into the fields as the water rushed over the highway.

We have witnessed an early tragedy however. It is not the flooding that has been the danger – it is the depth of the snow itself – along with the frozen, iced surface of the snow banks. It is beautiful to see but lethal for the wild life to the province.  In particular the White Tail deer population has been hit hard.

A number of times we have seen the carcass of the deer laying on top of the snow bank with the crows and ravens feeding on the remains.  The usual vehicle/deer collision is not the problem – it has been either the coyote or starvation that has taken the poor animals.  In their weakened state they are easy picking for the coyote or wolf packs that feed on these creatures.

Then yesterday we saw the huge herds of deer gathered at different places looking for food.

In one area the deer had walked right into the cattle pen to eat along with the cows.  They were less than 20 feet from the highway.  And they were small in body compared to other years.

Here is the photo evidence…

Then on top of a hill near the highway I counted at least 25 deer gathered and all with their heads down and front hooves digging at the bare hill top. On that hill the snow had either melted of had not collected into drifts because of the high winds. The deer were working hard to find something.

A hunter friend of mine told me that in years like this most of the fawn that are born to the doe (mother deer) will die.  The snow is too hard and the young are very exposed making it easy for the predators to pick them off. The predator is also starving in some areas with their normal prey dead or moving away to other places.

It has been one of the hardest winters in history.  And it is very sad to see.  Where is the warm weather and when will the big melt come? That is the question on everyone’s heart and mind.
