The Student Leaders from Quebec and the rest of Political Canada

I am in Ottawa for a series of meetings over two days – all to do with the Volunteer Work that I do in our community and across Ontario.

Ottawa is a political place to say the least. You can see it, smell it, hear it, feel it and taste it – everywhere.

The other night my wife and I were walking down one of the main thoroughfares and a noisy bunch of bicycle riders pulled up at an intersection right where we stood.  They were whooping and yelling out a kind of chant to let people know they were on the street.  All the people behind them knew they were there as well in that they had blocked completely four lanes of traffic – completely. I estimate that about 30 to 50 riders all told… about 8 to ten across and 4 to 5 deep(lengthwise).

I had no idea what they were upset about – but they were making a point.

Today I read in the news about the Student Leaders from Quebec that had turned their world upside down this past summer.   Their protests in Montreal and across the province was about the rise in their Student Tuition.  This eventually contributed to the defeat of the Premier and his political party(being ousted).  They definitely had a part on the disturbances and the political ruckus in their area.

The story today “Quebec student leaders want to spark national anti-Harper movement” in the Toronto Sun tells how they are going across Canada now to tell anyone interested people how they too can cause a new ruckus in their area.  They will show people how to organize and use new Social Media methods to cause disturbances the way they did.

I believe the Cyclists the other night were doing the same thing. They were well coordinated and they were protesting.  Something had joined them together and was holding them on track for the duration of what they were doing.

Now all of this follows the riots in Toronto when the “G-whatever number it was” caused the unrest and had some many people thrown in temporary cells. The whole world saw the young people smashing windows and stomping on police cars.  Some said they were anarchists – anti everybody and specially the government. They simply hate the world and likely themselves as well.

The new effort that the Students from Quebec are trying or are being prompted to do … is to bring down Stephen Harper and his party because of their austerity measures.  The cut backs have been so major in many areas that everyone is starting to feel it. And at this stage it is perfect to see a whole lot of people rise up to tell the present Government that they have had enough.

It is a fact that few of the politicians are feeling the pinch the way that the local people are feeling it. Their positions and pay scale is pretty and secure.  They are not feeling the pinch at all.

That was true until Monsieur Jean Charest – the former Premier of Quebec – went down in flames after the Students in Quebec revolted.

A funny thought I had is… Jean Charest will likely have a guaranteed position and a well-paid job going across Canada to tell other Politicians what to watch out for – Protesting Students and Angry People.

Do you have the feeling that you might not want to be a politician right now?  I know some of them and I know that they are having reservations. They are doing the old “D&H” thing – “Duck and Hide”.

I think that it is a good thing to write about now. People are not happy with what our Government has had to do. Notice the “had to do” part.  The huge amount of debt that we have now incurred in Canada is affecting everyone.

Debts must be paid. Just like the debt you chalked up last Christmas and still haven’t paid off yet.

Canada has had that happen so that we all will be paying off “Canada’s Christmas spending” for a long time to come.

Another thought… who will hire these students after they graduate?  Who would trust them to not do it again wherever they will work?

But maybe THIS IS THEIR WORK… to bring down governments wherever they can get a cell-phone connection…. Hmmm?

Ottawa in the Evening

After a very long walk, tired feet and good food this is Ottawa in the evening.  More specifically it is the Canal beside Chateau Laurier and the Canadian Parliament Building – “The Hill”.

Enjoy. It is truly a beautiful sight.

Me and the Medsoft “Morgan Scientific Body Box 5500 (Plethysmograph)”

Me and the Medsoft Morgan Scientific Body Box 5500 (Plethysmograph)”
As I sat in the waiting room yesterday I heard the person just ahead of me coughing very hard… then gasping for breath.  Whoa! This poor lady was in a great distress with her breathing as well.

The sounds that she was making were familiar to me. I have made these sounds as well… specially during allergy season or when my breathing is restricted with a severe cold.

I was waiting in the Pulmonary Testing waiting room. I was the next one to be put through the tests that would determine how bad or good I was doing with my breathing.

Allergy season is just about over… but the last two months have been a nightmare to say the least. The pollen in the air from certain plants and critters has made breathing and sleeping a chore some days and nights.  But it wasn’t just this last season it has been many seasons of getting worse… maybe with getting older… or maybe my world and the air in it is just a little dirtier.

When my turn came I could feel my heart skip a few beats as I walked in to the inner office.  The ladies words introduce me to a new world that I had not been in before – and to new equipment… the “Morgan Scientific Body Box 5500 (Plethysmograph)” – or Body Box for short.

Here is a photo that I plucked from their Web Site to let others see what I was involved in – with my testing.

The nice lady spoke softly trying to quell any fears of anxieties that I might have about sitting in a plexi-glass – telephone booth kind of thingie.

“Now this is new since the last time that you were here…” she explained.  She was right. I don’t remember being in this office and I had never seen this critter cage before.  I had no idea what to expect!!!

She instructed me to come to step into the body box 5500 and sit down on the adjustable chair while facing a complicated apparatus that protruded toward the chair.  I did as I was instructed.

The idea was that I was about to breath in and out of the mouth piece which would measure the amount of air that I was getting, keeping and inhaling.

What she didn’t tell me was that she was about to lock me in to the upright coffin thingie.

As I attached myself to the breathing mouth piece, which was like a snorkel that you use for underwater swimming, I also clipped my nose with a special fancy clothes pin so no air could get in or out of that orifice.

I felt like a pet that was sitting on the examining table at the Veterinarian’s Clinic. I am sure that I looked rather panicky from the left side of my eyes as she closed the door and then cranked the handle to the locked position.

When the clicking and popping started as the body box 5500 readied itself I could feel the air around me change. This dear lady was either pumping new air in around me or pumping it out.  I wasn’t sure… but my eyes must have conveyed my fear as the small speaker above my head to right relayed her question, “Are you alright…?” she asked soothingly…

“uouHuuu” was what I managed through the mouth piece that my teeth had gripped a tight hold on.  You cannot talk with a snorkel in your mouth – nor should you!

She then explained again what we were about to try… “in – out – in – out – then hold it… good… deep breath in and quickly out… more – more – more – more out…keep blowing… keep going – keep going….” I think that is what she said… I think… maybe… at the last “keep going” the room was going a little reddish in colour and my eyes were closing…!

“Take a breath and breath normally…” the speaker on the wall said…

The room returned to its normal colour… at which time the speaker asked, “Are you ready to do that again?”

“in – out – in – out – then hold it… good… deep breath in and quickly out… more – more – more – more out…keep blowing… keep going – keep going….”  The room went a funny colour this time with a few stars floating near the ceiling.

Then she gave me a puff on a puffing machine that administered some chemical stuff into my lungs… hiss… puff… hiss… puff.

Then Repeat – repeat – repeat… sheesh.  What the heck is wrong?

When she later opened the door and began talking to me she explained that she had never had anyone test like this before… the flat line area at the end of the blowing all the air out was the same as it was when I breathed normally. I guess when I was to push it all out – was the same as when I normally pushed it all out with breathing normally. Or something…

“I am going to take you to the other room and to another machine to try this again” she stated and then asked me to follow her.

It was then that I remembered the poor pet dog on that Veterinarian’s show… looking sideways at the camera… and thinking… “Master can’t we just go home?”

I don’t know if I passed the test or not. I did give her something to think about – no one had ever done what I had done… with the test results.

After she opened the door to the Body Box 5500 and told me of never having received these results before… I kindly explained… “Nothing is ever normal about me and from me!  That is just the way that I was made!  It is not your machine!”

The Body Box had proved that I am unique and unusual. Duh! I knew that before I sat down in that thingie.

Later after the Doctor went over the results he explained the next steps that were going to be needed to help me… oh boy! Puffer and more tests – at the hospital the time…. Oh boy!

I am not sure that the Body Box 5500 people will ever read this… but they might think of putting a seat belt to hold the person’s body upright… because when they fall over as they pass out… the door will not open easily with my body up against the door….

But I do appreciated the gal that helped me. She was so soothing in her explanation that I was sleepy at the end… and really ready for a nap. Whoa… maybe a lack of oxygen was doing that.

Misty Hollow Digital Images are now ready to go! WOW what a journey it has been!
Yesterday I passed another milestone.  “Misty Hollow Carving” – the business that we launched 4 years ago launched a second division entitled “Misty Hollow Digital Images

If you have read the short Blurb that I wrote at the beginning of this post – you may have noticed what has happened.

For approximately 2 1/2 years now I have been working alongside two great people in my life. Their names are Helen and Ted Howard, the owners of the Crop Circles store and business. Their store is located in the Peterborough Square – lower level – at 360 George Street, in Peterborough, Ontario.  Their business is worldwide with a Web Site that reaches around the everywhere.

How it all started…
This connection with Helen and Ted started about 2 years ago.  I walked into their store looking for Tatting Shuttles and Tatting cotton that I might buy. I was teaching Tatting and needed to know if there was a place that sold the product that we needed for the class.

Crop Circles was able and willing to be the store that would support Tatting by bringing in the shuttles that we needed for the class that was coming up and providing the cotton.

While I was in the store speaking with Ted I asked if they would consider me coming down to the store, setting up a table out front where I would demonstrate Tatting.  Ted and Helen talked about it and they thought this was a great idea.  I showed up the next Tuesday Morning to demonstrate my Tatting.  The arrangement was to be for 3 weeks.

That was two years and a bit ago – and I have been there at the Crop Circles store each Wednesday from 10 AM to 5 PM –meeting people and interacting ever since.

Along with the Tatting I added my wood carving and displayed the two side by side on a table out front. At the table I meet about 100 people each day.

One Day…
One Day Ted walked out to the table and saw my new carvings of small houses set up as a simple little village. It was my Misty Hollow Village that I carry around in my head… but was now finally coming out for other people to see and touch.

Ted quizzed me on my new Misty Hollow Village and asked where I got the idea from. I pointed to my head and told him how I draw the things that I see and then I carve them.

He asked me, “If I give you some paper and pens to try, could you draw some for me now?”

“Sure!”  was my reply… and away I went putting my Village in to the pad of paper. Ted scanned the drawings and asked if I would mind if the ladies coloured these in one of Helen’s Rubber Stamp classes when they make their Card Designs.

Ted suggested after we talked more about the concept of Drawings for the Rubber Stamp industry, that my drawings could be very popular in the future.  I had no idea of how big this concept was going to be – nor what would happen next.

At that time in Crop Circles business planning they were about to take a new step forward.  They were in the process of redeveloping the Crop Circles Web Site and were looking at providing Digital Images for customers along with their rubber stamps for the cards that people make.

I began drawing and Helen began creating cards using the drawings.  That was about 18 months ago when we launched this part of the project – and my first drawings became a part of the Greeting Card and Scrap Booking business at Crop Circles.

Yesterday I launched the new Blog for “Misty Hollow Digital Images” that takes people to the Crop Circles Web Site and the place that they can purchase the images that I am offering.

Today on this Blog I am offering you an opportunity to take a look at Misty Hollow Digital Images as well.  You can do that by clicking on the links below…

Two NFL Referees – Two Calls – and my life
My mouth dropped open as the play in the NFL Football game took place.

It was the very last moment of the game between Green Bay Packers and the Seattle Seahawks.  The game was close and hard fought by both teams!

The ball was thrown into the end zone and a scurry of football players jumped for it and then landed in the pile of bodies on the ground.

Two referees were standing right beside it and both saw what happened differently. They were standing side by side and saw it completely differently.

One referee held his hands up to indicate that it was a Touch Down. The other said it was an interception.  One was wrong and the other was right. But which one was wrong or right?

There is a lock out in the NFL of the Official Referees that normally do their job on the field.  The NFL has said you cannot work unless you do it our way.  They are the best that there is at what they do. That is why they are hired to do the job.  But to allow the game to go on the NFL league has brought in lesser referees from lower levels of football who are maybe not as good.

The call in the game has gone nutso.  The fans have reacted and the NFL League Officials are facing a huge pressure to get the better official back in the games.

Will the strike settle now?

I just read that the President of the USA has made a comment about it as well – on Twitter as he tweeted that "NFL fans on both sides of the aisle hope the refs' lockout is settled soon."

Can you imagine a more difficult scenario than the one that the replacement referees are facing?  They were enjoying what they did at their level of refereeing… and now they are the butt of all jokes because they tried to do the job that they were asked to do.

The referees that raised their arms in different ways at the side of the field in that last moment of that game – will pay for that for a long time.

Can you imagine how they felt as they looked at each other after it happened and it settled in that the whole of the world saw what they had done… and now they were being criticized heavily for what they did… how stupid one of them was!

They are under constant scrutiny and it is not going well.

Try writing a Blog and see what happens.  Not everyone will appreciate what you say or do.  I am so much in the middle of that kind of thing that I cannot fully tell you what it is like.

BUT – hey – I did that kind of thing for 35 years as a Minister. And as a Minister you would raise your hands as you called a play… and not everyone would agree. In fact some that didn’t agree could be counted on to react within minutes of your doing so… or within seconds.

Like the time “Bob” and his wife stood up and screamed at me in the middle of what was being said and done in church… their violent reactions were to what we were doing at that minute by way of an illustration!  Good Lord I remember what that was like!  They left the church and never came back again!  And I was left with a nightmare that has never gone away.

At that moment I was like the two referees and wishing to goodness that I could die on the spot.

The NFL will have to help their fans and referees to understand what is going on.

I simply feel for the two referees as they have been made to look like total idiots – for simply seeing what they have witnessed.

The fact that there is instant replay now with the TV Cameras catching everything – it clearly showed that one referee was wrong – but it was the last second of the game… the very last second!

Referee One and Referee Two – I feel for you guys today in a big way!!!

My Deep Reflections on the Ig Nobel Awards – I’m Amazed!

My Deep Reflections on the Ig Nobel Awards – I’m Amazed!
It is not a word that I use often. Perhaps never. But I recognized it immediately.

The word is ‘ignoble’ – meaning 1. Not honorable in character or purpose, 2. Of humble origin or purpose.

I can’t figure why I don’t use it more often. Most of my friends are ignoble and so am I – at least the second part of the definition – the humble part.

But when I was reading the word wasn’t ‘ignoble’ it was ‘ignobel’ or ‘ig nobel’.  The difference caught my eye immediately.  The ‘Nobel’ I recognized right away – but putting ‘ig’ with it twisted my mind.

That is exactly what it was designed to do. Brilliant!

So you haven’t heard of ‘ig nobel’ before? Just like me.

The ‘Ig Nobel’ is actually an award that is presented annually to people around the world for discovering or investigating the usual.  I think that is a great way to explain the concept or the word.

It bears the ‘humble origin or purpose’ thought for sure. It also is ‘not honorable in character or purpose’.

And yet it is very seriously looked at each year in October by certain groups at Harvard University. No kidding.

Wikipedia states the following about “Ig Nobel” – quote –
The Ig Nobel Prizes are an American parody of the Nobel Prizes and are given each year in early October for ten unusual or trivial achievements in scientific research. The stated aim of the prizes is to "first make people laugh, and then make them think". The awards are sometimes veiled criticism (or gentle satire). End quote.

They spend time on doing all the research and investigation on all the submissions sent their way for a possible Ig Nobel Award. There are only 10 give out each year.

The minute that I hit upon the idea I needed to know more.  What kind of awards are there?

Are you ready for these…?  Here are some of the awards passed out at the ceremony this past week or so.

PSYCHOLOGY PRIZE: Anita Eerland and Rolf Zwaan [THE NETHERLANDS] and Tulio Guadalupe [PERU, RUSSIA, and THE NETHERLANDS] for their study "Leaning to the Left Makes the Eiffel Tower Seem Smaller"

PEACE PRIZE: The SKN Company [RUSSIA], for converting old Russian ammunition into new diamonds.

ACOUSTICS PRIZE: Kazutaka Kurihara and Koji Tsukada [JAPAN] for creating the SpeechJammer — a machine that disrupts a person's speech, by making them hear their own spoken words at a very slight delay.

NEUROSCIENCE PRIZE: Craig Bennett, Abigail Baird, Michael Miller, and George Wolford [USA], for demonstrating that brain researchers, by using complicated instruments and simple statistics, can see meaningful brain activity anywhere — even in a dead salmon.

CHEMISTRY PRIZE: Johan Pettersson [SWEDEN and RWANDA]. for solving the puzzle of why, in certain houses in the town of Anderslöv, Sweden, people's hair turned green.

LITERATURE PRIZE: The US Government General Accountability Office, for issuing a report about reports about reports that recommends the preparation of a report about the report about reports about reports.

PHYSICS PRIZE: Joseph Keller [USA], and Raymond Goldstein [USA and UK], Patrick Warren, and Robin Ball [UK], for calculating the balance of forces that shape and move the hair in a human ponytail.

FLUID DYNAMICS PRIZE: Rouslan Krechetnikov [USA, RUSSIA, CANADA] and Hans Mayer [USA] for studying the dynamics of liquid-sloshing, to learn what happens when a person walks while carrying a cup of coffee.

ANATOMY PRIZE: Frans de Waal [The Netherlands and USA] and Jennifer Pokorny [USA] for discovering that chimpanzees can identify other chimpanzees individually from seeing photographs of their rear ends.

MEDICINE PRIZE: Emmanuel Ben-Soussan and Michel Antonietti [FRANCE] for advising doctors who perform colonoscopies how to minimize the chance that their patients will explode.

And…
SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: We are now, in 2012, correcting an error we made in the year 1999, when we failed to include one winner's name. We now correct that, awarding a share of the 1999 physics prize to Joseph Keller. Professor Keller is also a co-winner of the 2012 Ig Nobel physics prize, making him a two-time Ig Nobel winner.
The corrected citation is: 1999 PHYSICS PRIZE: Len Fisher [UK and Australia] for calculating the optimal way to dunk a biscuit, and Jean-Marc Vanden-Broeck [UK and Belgium] and Joseph Keller [USA], for calculating how to make a teapot spout that does not drip.

But the very best one – the greatest Ig Nobel Award in my mind was handed out in 2009 to Dr. Elena Bodnar… as seen below…

Ig Nobel Prize Winner Dr. Elena Bodnar demonstrates her invention (a brassiere that can quickly convert into a pair of protective face masks) assisted by Nobel laureates Wolfgang Ketterle (left), Orhan Pamuk, andPaul Krugman (right). Photo credit: Alexey Eliseev, 2009 Ig Nobel Ceremony

The Web Site that has all this information states that the following…
Who organizes the Ig Nobel Prizes?
The Ig Nobel Prizes are organized by the magazine Annals of Improbable Research. The ceremony is co-sponsored by the Harvard-Radcliffe Society of Physics Students, the Harvard-Radcliffe Science Fiction Association, and the Harvard Computer Society.

And today you may well be doing something that could earn you an Ig Nobel if just the right people hear about it.

Go for it!

Deep Fried Pickles – Passing it along
Not long ago my wife and I discovered Deep Fried Pickles.  I have eaten pickles for many years – but never deep fried.

Whoa! What a treat!

Of course all things that are important are found on the Internet… right? So here is the discovery that I made late last night.

Recipe One
Deep Fried Pickles
2 lg. egg yolks
1 c. water
1 1/2 c. flour
1 jar med. size dill or sweet pickles
Oil
Beat egg yolks and water together. Add flour slowly to keep batter smooth.
Slice pickles 1/2 inch thick, drain on paper towel. Dip pickle slices in batter and fry in hot deep fat. Serve warm.

Dorothy (Texas) says:
I made this for my son (16) and husband. They both loved these pickles. I added about 1 tbsp. of dill to the batter. What a hit!! Always looking to please "the boys" :) btw - used a fry daddy - brainless way to deep fry.
May 11, 6:51 PM
Courtney (Utah) says:
Great recipe except I advise to use a little less flour so the batter isn't too thick. This way they're nice and crispy and not chewy when you fry them. Really good if you dip them in buttermilk ranch!

Hanna (Texas) says:
Great classic recipe! For best results use self rising flour and I'd suggest adding some seasoning to the flour as you batter. Like Courtney said, try not to make the batter too thick or you won't get the crispy effect you crave!

Recipe Two -
Fried Dill Pickles
1 sm. can evaporated milk
1/4 c. sweet milk
2 eggs
A little flour
Dill pickles
Make batter of milk, eggs. Dip pickles in batter and roll in flour; deep fry. For sauce, use French horseradish mustard, mayonnaise and garlic salt to taste.
