Today’s Blog Post

Oops! Opportunity
Two years ago as I entered my first classes for the building of my new business we received specific suggestions as to answering the Telephone. We were told, start immediately to answer with your business name. In my case, that would be, “Good afternoon, Misty Hollow Carving”.

The second most important thing was to not let children or older people in the household answer the phone. The children tend to be too honest by saying things like, “Daddy can’t come to the phone right now, he is fighting with mommy – or maybe in the bathroom… oh I don’t know…”

Or if the older person answers, as in my case with my mom, she will say, “I can’t hear you because I don’t have my hearing aids in and my daughter-in-law has already gone out. Call back later..!” Click, she hangs up… the call is over.

It took a while to get mom to look at the number on the phone, if it was someone she knew, she then answered it, otherwise she let it go to the answering service.”

Two days ago it was an Ooops on my part, big time. Can’t lay blame on the “old people” or the kids in our household. It was solely my fault. I did it and nearly lost it. DUMB – real DUMB!

The telephone rang and I picked it up saying “Hello”, rather chirping it out. I was kind of expecting a call from a friend… and thought this might be him.

The voice asked, “Is this Misty Hollow? And do you have any speciality wood?”

I chirped back in my ‘funny voice’ – “You betcha on both counts!”

There was a pause and the voice asked again, “Are you the wood carver?”

By this time the fun in his voice was matching mine… “Do you have any exotic wood?”

I paused for a minute and asked how exotic he wanted it… thinking this definitely was one of my crazy friends calling to bug me…

I was going to say something even funnier that the “friend” I was waiting to hear from would have roared in laughter to… but for some reason instead I said, “What kind are you looking for and what is it going to be used for?” Let’s string it out a little more…

He then said, “I have two century old ‘Hawk’ – a ‘Tomahawk’ that I am trying to make a new handle for… and I would like to get some special wood for it…. Would you be able to help me? It is for a special friend of mine that is trying to do a very important deal within Canada.”

I asked the man what his name was… and He replied “John..”

Nope it wasn’t my friend that I thought was calling. I scampered to collect my thoughts. Then I asked, “Would you like to drop over and we can talk about it some more. I do have some interesting wood that you might like…?”

Within 30 minutes he was at my Wood Shop.

He owns a very good summer resort. Someone had given him my name and number with a wee bit of info about what I do.

The Tomahawk is a gift that will be given to a multi-millionaire to try and impress her so that she will buy into an idea – a really big idea that will affect many lives in the future. The Tomahawk is potentially worth a lot of money and is a special one from a long time ago… from $4000 to $7000 – yikes!
Oh boy. It arrived today and it is a treasure from long ago. The handle that is on it now is not very good – someone tried to put an old stick in place of what should or might have been there.

I am reconsidering the chirping voice on the phone… yikes… I shudder with the thoughts of what almost happened. Ooops – that was dumb.

It looks now that I may have witnessed another really important door just swing wide open to a market place that I had no idea that it even existed!

But, tell me, how many people have very wealthy people call, about a Tomahawk for a Millionaire… I mean how many Millionaires will need a Tomahawk…??? How could I ever know… ?

I am so thankful to whichever person picked up my Misty Hollow Business card and passed it on to John! Whoa! Opportunity!

Say… I remember that vice nice looking lady last week at the Mall. She stopped and asked questions about carvings… and asked for a card… I’ll bet you that was the card… WOW!

And it all finalized today – Friday the 13th! Wahoo!

PS - If you read this later "John" - you will see that this is your 'Hawk'... and now you will know why I acted a little weird on the Telephone! Sorry!
