A Buffoon a day will keep you away

I was standing at the magazine rack in Chapters.  Beside me was very tall man with a baseball cap on and a sweat shirt.  He had just placed the magazine he had been looking at back where he had picked it from.  Then I spoke.

“I am looking for the “Wood Carving Illustrated” magazine.  Same for you?”

He offered, “No I am just looking for magazines with patterns of “Wood Spirits” in them.”

It was then that I recognized the dude.  We had met about 15 years ago through my previous employment as a minister of a church.  He was a son-in-law of one of the congregants.

We greeted each other and both remembered when we last spoke to each other… I think it was a funeral.

I offered, “I started a full time wood carving course when I retired.  It has gone well.”

Then waiting for the next, normal exchange… I looked at him.

“I would never charge for my wood carving!” he exclaimed, “I give all my things I carve away, either to my family or to friends.” The gleam in his eyes told me of his great pride in doing what he could for those around him.

I gulped… and wondered what I should say next.  The guy was a buffoon and had just told me that I was wrong for charging anyone for my work. As a wood carver I should give it away… free of charge and to anyone that might ask me for it.

I dove in and told him, “You could help support your retirement if you set a good price…”

But he interrupted my polite encouragement by saying, “I would NEVER do THAT!”

Suddenly I felt dirty and stupid and wanting to run from that place.  ‘What an idiot you are Lincoln! How could you charge for something that should be given away?!’ ran through my confused little mind.

I was at fault – truly. I should never have greeted the dude. I knew what he was like and why he and I never saw eye to eye on much of anything.  Now I know why he was always aloof when speaking with anyone. He was better than they were and they were dumber than he was. Choke me up quickly – before I say more.

“Have good whatever!” I said as controlled as I could. I was going offer him any more time.  I knew whatever I said would be not good enough for this guy. Whatever topic I chose would be less than he would have done or is doing.

I told you he was a buffoon… a big buffoon.

I left the store shortly after that and vowed to not let myself slip again… introducing a potential discussion with any possible buffoon.

Definition of Buffoon…

   1.                  buf·foon  /bəˈfo͞on/

     Noun
A ridiculous but amusing person; a clown.
     Synonyms
     clown - jester - zany - harlequin - fool - merry-andrew
I rolled around last evening muttering to myself between dreams… I could have told him… nah!Not worth it…!

Note to self:  Check out the Magazine shelves and area for potential Buffoons… arghhh!!!

World Politics – Have a Cow

SOCIALISM
You have 2 cows.
You give one to your neighbour

COMMUNISM
You have 2 cows.
The State takes both and gives you some milk

FASCISM
You have 2 cows.
The State takes both and sells you some milk

NAZISM
You have 2 cows.
The State takes both and shoots you

BUREAUCRATISM
You have 2 cows.
The State takes both, shoots one, milks the other, and then
throws the milk away

TRADITIONAL CAPITALISM
You have two cows.
You sell one and buy a bull.
Your herd multiplies, and the economy
grows.
You sell them and retire on the income

ROYAL BANK OF SCOTLAND (VENTURE) CAPITALISM
You have two cows.
You sell three of them to your publicly listed company, using letters of credit opened by
your brother-in-law at the bank, then execute a debt/equity swap with an associated general offer so that you get all four cows back, with a tax exemption
for five cows.
The milk rights of the six cows are transferred via an intermediary to a Cayman Island Company secretly owned by the majority shareholder who sells the rights to all seven cows back to your listed company.
The annual report says the company owns eight cows, with an option on one more. You sell one cow to buy a new president of the United States , leaving you with nine cows. No balance sheet provided with the release.
The public then buys your bull.

SURREALISM
You have two giraffes.
The government requires you to take harmonica lessons.

AN AMERICAN CORPORATION
You have two cows.
You sell one, and force the other to
produce the milk of four cows.
Later, you hire a consultant to analyse why
the cow has dropped dead.

A GREEK CORPORATION
You have two cows. You borrow lots of euros to build barns, milking sheds, hay stores, feed sheds,
dairies, cold stores, abattoir, cheese unit and packing sheds.
You still only have two cows.

A FRENCH CORPORATION
You have two cows.
You go on strike, organise a riot, and block the roads, because you want three
cows.

A JAPANESE CORPORATION
You have two cows.
You redesign them so they are one-tenth the size of an ordinary cow and produce
twenty times the milk.
You then create a clever cow cartoon image called a Cowkimona and
market it worldwide.

AN ITALIAN CORPORATION
You have two cows,
but you don't know where they are.
You decide to have lunch.

A SWISS CORPORATION
You have 5000 cows. None of them belong to you.
You charge the owners for storing them.

A CHINESE CORPORATION
You have two cows.
You have 300 people milking them.
You claim that you have full employment, and high bovine productivity.
You arrest the newsman who reported the real situation.

AN INDIAN CORPORATION
You have two cows.
You worship them.

A BRITISH CORPORATION
You have two cows.
Both are mad.

AN IRAQI CORPORATION
Everyone thinks you have lots of cows.
You tell them that you have none.
No-one believes you, so they bomb the ** out of you and invade your country.
You still have no cows, but at least you are now a Democracy.

AN AUSTRALIAN CORPORATION
You have two cows.
Business seems pretty good.
You close the office and go for a few beers to celebrate.

A NEW ZEALAND CORPORATION
You have two cows.
The one on the left looks very attractive...

Great Words for a beautiful day

Someone wrote these words. Maybe they are for you today…(From my FB friend Pamela)

(1) Prayer is not a "Spare wheel!" that you pull out when in trouble, but it's a "Steering wheel!" that directs the right path throughout the journey!"
(2) So why is a Car's WINDSHIELD so large, and the rear view mirror so small? because our PAST is not as important as our FUTURE. So Look Ahead, and Move On!
(3) Friendship is like a BOOK. It takes a few minutes to burn, but it takes years to write.
(4) All things in life are temporary. If going well enjoy it, they will not last forever. If going wrong, don't worry, they can't last long either.
(5) Old Friends are Gold! New Friends are Diamond! If you get a Diamond, don't forget the Gold! Because to hold a Diamond, you always need a base of Gold!
(6) Often when we lose Hope, and think "this is the end," GOD smiles from above and says, "Relax Precious Child, it's just a bend, not the END!"
(7) When GOD solves your problems, you have Faith in His Abilities: When God doesn't solve your problems, He has Faith in your abilities.
(8) A blind person asked St. Anthony: "Can there be anything worse than losing eyesight?" He replied; "Yes losing your VISION!"
(9) When you pray for others, God listens to you, and Blesses them, and sometimes when you are safe, and happy, remember that someone has prayed for you.
(10) WORRYING does not take away tomorrow's TROUBLES, it takes away today's PEACE!

LIVE simply, LOVE generously, CARE deeply, SPEAK kindly. Leave the rest to God. God loves you; He always has, and always will!

Hidden in the Ganaraska Forest is the Laveanne Lavender Farm and Organic Nursery

As I traveled down the back road, following my GPS readings, I was going further and further from any beaten path. The road alone was amazing, let alone what I found in the Ganaraska Forest.  It was mysterious and magical; it was beautiful and spell binding – it was the Laveanne Lavendar Farm and Organic Nursery(http://www.growtasty.com/).  It was amazing.

Everyone of my “39 the Second Time” folk/friends need to make the journey to this wonderful place!  Every one!! In fact my invitation is not just for the folk about my age but for every one.

Lavender for me has been limited to usually the front entrance to many Exhibitions across our country. I think particularly of the CNE in Toronto where you get a whiff of this potent and magical flower as you enter a large building dedicated to flowers and products from around the world.  Lavender can make me sneeze given large doses.

But the Laveanne Farm simply blew me away.  It is amazing what is happening at this special place in the Forest!  It is not what I expected – not at all!!

I joined Logan Brazeau, Gary Brazeau, and Sabena Brazeau along with a number other folk for a day of presentations at the Farm.  Sabena had contacted me to see if I might be interested in joining them for a day – to show my carvings and particularly my new Fairy Houses.

Logan Brazeau is Grow Tasty’s founder, in charge of operations, graphic designs, web-site and marketing.  Gary Brazeau is a business partner, grower and producer, in charge of building construction, technology and marketing.  Sabena Brazeau is grower and producer in charge of customer service, marketing and sales, purchasing, inventory, scheduling and training.

Logan, as 15 year old boy, launched this operation in 2004.  As time went on it has grown to a much bigger operation with his Dad, Gary, and Mom, Sabena, now fully involved. Reading the “History” of this Farm is very informative (http://www.growtasty.com/ - About US – History Tab)

Now I am involved in the dream and vision of “Tasty Grow” and will contribute where I can.

Recently in discussion with another artist about all things “Fairy”, she had asked if there was another place in our area where Fairies could be shown… WOW!  What a timely question – I do believe that the Laveanne Farm may be another special site that is more than ready to include “all things Fairy”.  We will see what happens.

Yesterday at the Farm it was so quiet.  There was little breeze, bright sunshine, and the large open field with the small Lavender plants stretched out in creative rows. All the rows seemed to point to the large Labyrinth for the guests to walk through.  All part of the magic of this place.

It was still… even as more and more guests arrived.

I invite you the reader to join Gary and Sabena – along with others to visit over these next few weeks.  It is summer time when all the Farm is alive. This is not just a weekend tourist spot… it is a real farm that is open to all.

Laveanne Lavender Farm is located just west of  Bewdley on Gilmour Road.  The address is 8667 Gilmour Road, Campbellcroft, ON L0A 1B0, Canada, 905-797-1100 (My GPS found it easily!)

Here are some photos of yesterday to show the Magic of this farm… enjoy!

Dealing with Mean Girls in Peterborough, Ontario – Yikes!

Dealing with Mean Girls in Peterborough, Ontario – Yikes!

As a retired Grandpa I have been away from some of the nasty human interactions that take place on a daily basis.

I used to work close to the “heart of nastiness” as a minister – where people often poured out sordid details of what people actually do to each other.  That happened specially with teenagers in the High School ministry that I was part of.  (I did not teach and was not involved in High School). As Youth Pastor in church the youth came to me and talked. They talked because I listened.  And in this role it was a vital link to these kids.  At home they had stopped talking to their parents – who were often too busy to stop and listen.

Well guess what I am back into this again.  Suddenly I am somewhat involved in teenager’s lives – all over again. I am seeing what teenagers can do to each other and what they can do to even adults!

This comes at a time in Canada when two young men were arrested by the police in the Maritimes. They were apparently involved in possibly making videos of a sexual attack on a young lady – then distributing the video.  The young lady that was molested suffered personally with the cyber-attacks and bullying that she felt by what happened. She took her own life – not able to cope any longer with what had happened by these guy’s actions.

Now the situation that I witnessed over these past few weeks is nothing like this at all… but it has some very sobering things happening.  An entire business is being affected by one teenagers actions.  Think of many customers being influenced by one a teenagers action and reactions… and see business loss.

“Tash” as I came to know her is part of a student placement program at the store that I do much work at. “Tash” and two other students were brought into the store this summer by an agreement by the store owner to help them get experience.

It has been a nightmare having “Tash” at the store.  And the nightmare is not over – but possibly growing worse. This girl could be the “Star” of the “Mean Girls” movie.

An example – one young lady at the store working as a volunteer, was asked to organize a storage room with some of the store’s products. She did an amazing job. “Tash” then went in after the girl went home and completely screwed up what the girl had done. Can you believe it?!  She took the room and the order the young Grade Nine student had accomplished and completely took it apart.

“Tash” is a Grade Twelve student.

After a number of things that “Tash” did she was removed from the program and the store.

BUT that wasn’t the end. She returned to “go out to lunch” with the young man that still is in the program and works at the store. After Lunch on Thursday he returned to speak to the staff member in a way that tore the poor lady apart. This staff person was the reason that “Tash” no longer works there… and now the target of “Tash’s” wrath.  After the young man, also a Grade Twelve student, unloaded his reaction to “Tash” and the luncheon they had – he walked out telling the staff member that he was not feeling well.

The work that was assigned and given to him to do – by me and the staff member is not done. Personally I was counting on and planning to have the work done by a given date. The work represents real potential money for the store… and it has been delayed – yet again.

Now for four weeks the program has been delayed – and in each situation “Tash” was involved directly or indirectly in the reason for the delay.

Reminding myself that this was to have been work experience where the young person will pick up valuable time and experience in a real life situation… why would they screw it up?

I will pause and tell you that “Tash” is brilliant. I have not found a young lady with as much ability and the “catch on right away” talent that she has.  She could turn the world upside down.

But she is a manipulator to the Max! She can weave an adult around her little finger with very little effort – then play the person in whatever way she would like to!!! NO kidding – I have seen it take place.

Now the summer program that these three students have been involved with has been deeply scarred – in my opinion.

Worse yet… what “Tash” has told the other adults in her life what has gone on at the store – who knows what has been said.  And many people will possibly believe this gal… and all the lies that she can tell.

Today I am back there to see what I can do to rescue the work that I had metered out.  I am not looking forward to the battle field. Not at all!!

Now do you understand just a little what the “Mean Girls” movie is about?

Sheesh! I thought I was retired!!!!

Greig Bell and Tour du Canada – connecting with a great group last evening

Greig Bell and about two dozen folk are riding their bicycles across Canada.  And they are doing this in a relatively short period of time. By August 31 they will be in St. John’s Newfoundland.  They started in Vancouver June 21st and arrived in Carrying Place (south of Trenton), Ontario last evening – August 6.  That is where Alida and I caught up with the group and had a great visit with Greig.

Greig is the dad of Zach Bell, our amazing “Olympian Nephew”… and an amazing Canadian Cycling Competitor.

As Greig shared about his son last evening, Zach did his latest race in London, England and was then in Norway yesterday. Greig has a hard time keeping up with his son’s whereabouts in the world.

Long before Zach and his sister Jessie came into the world, Greig was into cycling. Greig and my sister cycled from Naicam, Saskatchewan to Vancouver, B.C. – across our large Canadian Prairie and then up and over our huge mountains in Alberta and B.C.

Now at 58 years old and being a retired High School teacher, Greig has time on his hands and is making it work for himself.

Greig is part of the team from “Tour du Canada” - http://www.tourducanada.com/

What an awesome idea to ride all the way across Canada. I love biking and when I was younger I loved riding a long way on my bike.  That continued until I was older… however the distances are less and less. Ahem. Just respecting the old body and what it says to me daily!!!

Last evening it was good sharing with Greig and catching up on all this time we haven’t seen each other.  It has been a lot of years.

BTW we did this catching up at a Tim Horton’s donut shop in Trenton – not at the Camp Site.

I wish Greig and his team the best as they continue on to Ottawa in two days time… wow!

Way to go “Tour du Canada 2013”

Take a look at these photos and the description...
Greig standing with us by his fancy hotel accommodations

Greig with his "trustee steed" - not even a flat tire yet!!!

Supper time for the team - each night a different group cooks their food and cleans up

A truck and driver travels ahead of the team each day - to the next camp site and takes care of carrying their extra luggage etc., plus buying groceries for the next evening's meal.

Notice the refrigerator for the cold stuff
