The power of a person’s imagination will change the society’s direction and history
(This is way more serious today than the last few posts about bachelors and hockey… I needed a pause from serious thinking these past few days because of personal crisis in the family. )

The last few evenings I have been listening to http://www.cbc.ca/ideas/ and in particular a program entitled ‘Imagination’ which both parts 1 & 2 - http://www.cbc.ca/ideas/popupaudio.html?clipIds=2292450189,%202293226155

Through the magic of the Internet you can also hear what is being discussed.

I have been thinking about my imagination… and other’s.

Someone asked me where my ideas come from for my wood carving and art work. My simple answer is ‘out of my imagination’.  I can’t explain how it comes or where it exactly it resides in me – it is just there and then it comes out. What you see is what I have taken time to frame on my outside…from what I see inside.

I am in contact with other artists. One I met the other day told me of what he does. I looked at what he does and it is SO DIFFERENT from me. His thoughts are not the way that I think… and his work is very different from mine. But his work is excellent in every way… just different from mine.

After we connected I started to think of how weird I must be in his mind. What I do is so different from what he does.

Last evening I had an hour to speak with my two grandsons in my car as we returned to Peterborough (the third one was asleep in the back seat).

The three of us discussed ‘Imagination’. With the help of one grandson I quizzed the other grandson, ‘If you were to construct a computer game – what would it look like?’

Before we had traveled half way home we all could see an island, a beach, a forest in front of us, with a mountain on it… that was likely volcanic originally and now has monkeys and fruit and all the stuff that a jungle has. It was an amazing journey for the three of us that were a million miles away from our vehicle in that one hour drive.

Imagination… wow!

I then switched from our Island and we talked about Hitler and what his imagination did to the world.  They were really thinking how big their imagination is.

I asked them to think about the imagination that the author of a good book that they each had read.  We talked about the author’s imagination… and one of the Grandsons said… “Oh wow!” when he felt the thought sink in.

I have a treasure within me… my tremendous imagination.  You may not think it is much… but when I LIVE WITH IT – IT IS SOMETHING ELSE TO COPE WITH.

You need to listen to the CBC Radio’s program – it will challenge your imagination.

The power of a person’s imagination will change the society’s direction and history.

Brad Smith – No Hockey – Presidential Debate and stupid stuff in Politics

Brad Smith – No Hockey – Presidential Debate and stupid stuff in Politics
You know that the county is going to be in trouble this week when the following happens…

* There is no Hockey on TV and the TSN station broadcasts an old movie about Hockey…
* The USA Presidential Election Trail is watched by most Canadians…
* Guys without dates are going to Staples to look for “Binders full of Women” after Mitt Romney stated he looked through these kind of Binders in the so called Debate…
* Bachelor Brad smith sends home four girls instead of two… on The Bachelor Canada TV Show…
* Our Premier quits politics…

As I read the news today I was looking for a good theme to put my words to.  It wasn’t one story that caught my attention but many. This has been one very crazy week here we live.

One story was about the Border Guard Lori Bowcock that was shot in the neck by a man that then killed himself as he sat in his vehicle going through customs. The reason that I read the article was the Title – “Wounded border guard not targeted, police say”.  Duh!  She came up to the vehicle and he pulled his pistol out and shot at what?  The bird going by? The bug on his side mirror? Nope he shot the woman – but she just happened to be in the way of the bullet form his gun… DUH!?

Then I read that Brad Smith sent the potential dates – that were sitting on the couch together – on fire when he took off his shirt!!!! No kidding!  That actually happened!!  What bunch of air-heads!  Brad buddy – you want to hook up with a dizzy chick that swoons over you taking your shirt off. When you hit 60 and your belly is bigger than your breast Brad, swoon will not be happening any longer.  What crap!

I admit that I watched five minutes of that really stupid excuse for a TV Program.  I also have watched a whole program of the Real Wives of Vancouver and couldn’t believe there were people like this living in Canada… Vancouver maybe… but how can they call this Canadian!!?

Then the comment of Mitt Romney going through ‘binders of women’ to find some that were good to serve on his State Cabinet in Massachusetts when we was Governor there!  A bunch of my friends are looking for that Binder at Staples now!

I mean there are weeks that are memorable and then are weeks that you just wished were last month or 10 years ago when you could forget it.

But why do Canadians watch an American debate between two people that they can never vote for to be their President?  It is likely because this is an example of poor Canadians suffering deeply because of ‘Hockey Withdrawal’.  I mean it is no the middle of October and there is no Hockey on TV – only short reports that the owners and players might meet some day to get over their little spat.

I am so glad that there is YouTube on my computer where I can watch the idiots falling off the roof over and over again.  I can see the nut case riding a bike over a knoll and flipping face first into the swamp.   I can leer at the fat lady singing while that idiot fell out of the seat…

I am Canadian and just like the rest of my friends…. Oh boy.

Political Things are Happening in Ontario – Big Time - WOW

Political Things are Happening in Ontario – Big Time - WOW
Two days ago our Premier, Dalton McGuinty, announced his resignation as Premier of our Province of Ontario and the Leadership of the Provincial Liberal Party.  He also took a step to Prorogue Parliament, meaning our Provincial Parliament is now shut down indefinitely.

My goodness the newspapers and the news media are having a feeding frenzy trying to determine what might take place next.

There is analysis upon analysis made by everyone trying to state in their opinion what is going on… or what will happen next.

They are also guessing why he has quit now.

Dalton McGuinty has been in the political world for 16 years from what I gleaned and has been Premier of our Province for 7 years.

He offered the answer as to why he was stepping down… and the answer that he gave was “it is about family” – needing more time to be with them etc.

There are guesses now as to the possibility of his running for the National Liberal Party’s leadership… oh boy.

Did you get the part about being with Family more… more and bigger politics will not allow that to happen.  Either we don’t get it – or he hasn’t really decided yet.

I highly doubt the idea that he wants more politics.  I am sure that he wants less.  And in the Media Scrum when he met with the boys and girls of the press… I think he played with them. As the Leader up to that moment he couldn’t play with anyone… now he can and I believe he enjoyed that.

I wish him the best for the Future!  He has earned time away from the centre of public debate and criticism.  He has earned a rest now.

In recent time the issues that have been dealt with teachers and their unions (a freeze was imposed on their salaries and stuff) – he can’t go anywhere without a reminder that he is labeled as a culprit that caused problems for them… and I just bet that his grandkids are getting the brunt of that misery at school!!!!

The issues with two power plants being built and closing down construction during the election – is going to cost a gazillion dollars for a few votes for the MPPs of that area.

And there is more on the horizon with the wage issues and more union stuff facing his government now…

And he woke up that magic morning and said… “Folks I have had enough… today I resign.” And it was over.

I certainly understand what he has gone through.  My departure happened in 2008… not as Premier… but as a Pastor… the one in charge that tried hard to do my very best… but people still thought I was wrong… and some as ‘Good Christians’ even hated me. Oh boy the shiver just went up my backbone again.

Premier Dalton McGunity my hat goes off to you and I say thank you for what you have done for our Province.  I also say… good luck to the next guy or gal that takes over.

Something tells me that the next leadership race in Canada… for his job will be better than the one for the USA’s President.

This should be fun!

More Time for Videos on the Internet

More Time for Videos on the Internet
When researching the story yesterday of Felix Baumgartner’s high altitude jump I rediscovered the www.Telegraph.co.uk ’s web site.  They offer and short blurb with words and then a video that goes along.

To the right side of the main Telegraph story being featured they have a “Relate Video” section in a side bar.  In this area you will find other videos that are possible related to what you are watching.

Their method is much the same as the YouTube site.  After you look at one video, others are offered to keep you viewing.  For example if the video you have viewed is comical – other comical videos are offered as well… plus a possible video that may be in another direction but maybe similar in content.

On the Telegraph site I watched the Felix Baumgartner jump and then saw that they offered a video about the Hong Kong “Soapbox racing takes off in Hong Kong” .

It was in this video that I watched and listened to a Hong Kong butcher that was telling the camera in English, that he was riding in a Soapbox sponsored by his Butcher Shop… and if he won he would get a promotion to become a ‘half butcher’????

The “Soapbox racing takes off in Hong Kong” . was fantastic!  It then suggested that I might like to see a “Base jump gets off to a bad start”  Whoa! Dangerous but fun to watch – who knows what happened to the poor guy that fell down the mountain cliff .

But that then offered me another Red Bull sponsored video of Jeb Corliss jumping from a helicopter in his Wingsuit, then gliding through Tianmen Mountain in Hunan Province.  In the video he shoots through the hole that is solid rock on each side, zooms through the valley below and then pops open his parachute to land with grace on a bridge that is loaded with cameras and people.

And there was more… and an hour later it was time to go.

I have learned some amazing things about watching videos on the Internet… YOU NEED TO HAVE LOTS OF TIME TO SIT AND DO NOTHING!

But it is way too much fun! And once in a while you need to have some fun.

Enjoy the Links and specially the Soapbox video.

Felix Baumgartner did it!
As I watched this video this morning of Felix jumping from the Gondola my heart nearly stopped a number of times.  This was a replay of what happened yesterday.

Felix Baumgartner did it!  He stepped out of the capsule at 128,000 feet.  He would reach over 700 mph or 1300 kph speed as he descended toward earth.

Another site Flightglobal - VIDEO: Skydiver Felix Baumgartner breaks sound barrier, altitude record

The Telegraph offers this Video of Felix Baumgartner – great shots

At the side of the CTV story today you can click on one of the videos and see the entire jump…. Amazing.

Then there is the video of Felix describing how he felt.

If that isn’t enough – try this one – Felix’s Headcam

It is truly wonderful what man is able to do. Felix’s jump will be one that I watch over and over again.

But I will be dreaming tonight… and holding my breath over and over again.

Screaming at the Thief and then shaking my head

Screaming at the Thief and then shaking my head
Yesterday morning was not good.  I opened our car door to find all the contents of the glove compartment scattered all over the floor, the centre console was emptied, the electric cords for the cell phones and the GPS were scattered around as well.  And the $3.00 in change from the console plus my 91 year old mother’s - $6.99 Sun Glasses were gone as well.

The night before I was very tired as I returned home from the very busy day in Brighton. I had taught four classes and was talked out – completely.  I had unpacked the car of all my carving things and tools… then went into the house to flop into bed.

I was sure that I locked the car. I always lock the car. I never do something so foolish as leaving it unlocked.  But this time I did… it was definitely my fault.

All day I felt dirty. Each time I sat in my driver’s side seat I felt the creepy feeling that the idiot was sitting right where I sit and carefully poked through all out junk.

The idiot possibly stole two walkie-talkies that we may have had in the console. They didn’t work that well and should have been thrown out.  We never use them anymore.

The kind of things that the person took indicated who they were.  Small change – which was big to them… and clumsy Sun Glasses that might make him look like a 91 year old great grandmother.  Two old style walkie-talkies that had no use when you have two Cell Phones that work far better.

Under my seat there was two very expensive converter/charging units that change the 12 volts into 125 volts.  Both were still there… and not even moved.

Not only do I feel dirty in my own car… I am looking at every young punk that walks by now with suspicion.  I cannot wait to see the dude with the clunky glasses on walk by… he may just have to deal with me at that moment.

Do I wish him ‘bad things’ in his life?  Nope, not at all. If he doesn’t change his ways quickly I will see him in Jail and then in Prison someday.

You see God knows where the dude is right now. He knows where the Glasses are and he will make the dude have to deal with it all.  The misery that he will be feeling right now will be growing until he will not sleep well.

Nope I do not have to do anything. God will do the rest.

And YES… I locked the car last night – three times before I went inside.

Gale Nasso and Me and Compassion Fatigue

This BLOG is sponsored by my businesses. I blatantly do this with no apologies ;-)

Gale Nasso and Me and Compassion Fatigue
The following email arrived late last night into my Inbox of my Email account.  What should I do?  The Spam Filter on my Email program didn’t catch this one as a possible Spam item.

The lady or man that is writing goes by the name of Gale Nasso.

Here is the email…
“I'm writing this with tears in my eyes, my family and I came over here to Madrid, Spain for a short vacation. unfortunately, we were mugged at the park of the hotel where we stayed, all cash and credit card were stolen off us but luckily for us we still have our passports with us.

We've been to the Embassy and the Police here but they're not helping issues at all and our flight leaves in few hours from now but we're having problems settling the hotel bills and the hotel manager won't let us leave until we settle the bills. Well I really need your financial assistance. Please, Let me know if you can help us out? Am freaked out at the moment.

Gale...”

That was sometime yesterday that it arrived and I read it sometimes last night.

“What should I do?” is the normal good hearted Canadian way of dealing with this appeal.  I asked that of myself as well.

I have about 1200 or so “friends” connected to me on my Facebook account.  I have some more connected on my LinkedIn account and on other business accounts as well.

Who is Gale Nasso?  I did a search of some of these accounts that I have and couldn’t find the person in my “Friend’s List”… nor anywhere on those programs.

But on Canada 411, the searching telephone directory I did find 4 ‘G Nasso’ living not far from where I live in Ontario. One lives around the corner from my friends ‘Karen and Phil’ in Courtice, Ontario.

Maybe I met this person at Karen and Phil’s little boy’s birthday party?

Now that you have read this far and of my quandary – what are you thinking?  Scam?  A pile of B.S.?  Yep that is what I am thinking too.

Then I started thinking – “What kind of person would try this kind of thing? How desperate are they to try to scam people of their hard earned money?  As more and more of these Scams come my way, am I getting hard hearted in giving any time to even consider what ant need a person might have?”

The person has to be someone that has no thought for others and only themselves.  Selfish is an old word that we don’t use too often now for fear of hurting someone’s feelings.

Desperate?  Maybe not desperate but rather opportunistic and without any conscience at all.

My own reaction is the most serious of the issues that I am facing… my own hard heartedness… is becoming real.  I don’t know who is real and who isn’t, who is truthful and who is a liar.  I have lost my own ‘care package’ that I was designed with. I could care less if Gale Nasso rots in the fancy hotel in Spain or not.

I didn’t use to be – I used to care for people- even ones that I had never met.  I used to be a Minister and had all kinds of people come to me for help.  That is ‘used to be’.  Not anymore – I am not paid to care or lead a group of people that do care.  I am on my own and kind have become like most people that are sitting near me in church now.

I am self-absorbed and self-centered like everyone else.  After the attacks come at me from every possible angle for my sympathy and care and response to a need… I have become a Compassionate Burnout Victim… or am suffering compassion fatigue.

Others have called it Secondary Traumatic Stress Disorder as well.

In Wikipedia someone posted the following… Compassion Fatigue…
Compassion fatigue (also known as a secondary traumatic stress disorder) is a condition characterised by a gradual lessening of compassion over time. It is common among trauma victims and individuals that work directly with trauma victims. It was first diagnosed in nurses in the 1950s.  Sufferers can exhibit several symptoms including hopelessness, a decrease in experiences of pleasure, constant stress and anxiety, and a pervasive negative attitude. This can have detrimental effects on individuals, both professionally and personally, including a decrease in productivity, the inability to focus, and the development of new feelings of incompetency and self-doubt.

Journalism analysts argue that the media has caused widespread compassion fatigue in society by saturating newspapers and news shows with often decontextualized images and stories of tragedy and suffering. This has caused the public to become cynical, or become resistant to helping people who are suffering.

Oh boy… I am afraid that I have hit these levels before “, the inability to focus, and the development of new feelings of incompetency and self-doubt.”
Should I put that on my résumé?
Whether I am there now or have recovered somewhat I am not really sure – yet. But I know that I have been there.

Peterborough is an amazing place for volunteers to be involved in raising money for so many different causes. I think that 75% or our calendar weekends are filled with one cause or another. Everyone is Running, Walking, Biking, Hiking, or Swimming for a cure of some kind or other.  There are opportunities to get involved to support or pay for or supply help to or be there for the hard stories of life and people around me.

If I truly listen to all the causes and all the problems and try my best to support each one – I will die of Compassion Fatigue!  And some Donors to good causes are suffering and simply quit donating.  I did and I have.

My Compassion Motor inside smells funny. That smell comes just before the motor goes poof and stops working for good.

So when Gale Nasso lays it on me about being beat up and robbed outside a swanky hotel – I ask “Well why did you go there – dummy?”  NOT – “How can I help or when or where do I send the money?”

That is how I know I am still in trouble with what I went through.

Yep I am getting better and Yep I need a Gale Nasso once in a while to show me I have a ways to go yet.

I know now that I have much more to study about this and more reading to be done… whoa!
