Today’s Blog Post
“Why don’t you?” – “Why not try?” – followed by, “I believe in you and your ability!”

It was about 45 years ago when someone said three magic words to me that changed my life. The person was standing near me. I do not know her name – but I remember the words that she spoke.

They were simple words in the form of a question… “Why don’t you?”

Along with a group of people we had walked into a Craft and Art Show somewhere in Toronto. The products being displayed were amazing and a great variety. I picked up one of the pieces to look closer at the craftsmanship. It was amazing but not impossible to make.

As I handled it I said out loud, “I can do that?” expressing my feelings about the product. To me it seemed easy. I knew I could make one just as good if not better. But I had never tried.

It was at that moment the lady beside me spoke her words, “Why don’t you?” The question stopped me dead at that moment and kind of punched a hole inside of me… or another way to say it… broke a dam of difficulty in my soul.

All of a sudden I wanted to do it too.

I cannot remember the craft or the art work that we were looking at – but I strongly remember that feeling inside of me. Something had been unlocked and set loose.

Within the next three months I would move to Quebec to begin a new career as a Technician working with computers, business machines and people. I had lots of time to think in the new job… and the thought of “Why don’t you?” kept ringing in my ears and soul.

I walked into an art material store in Trois Rivieres, Quebec and the adventure began.

The creativity in me exploded. I loved to draw and paint. I loved to sculpt. I loved to carve. And in the next months and years I tried it all. That has gone on now for 45 years… and not stopped.

It was there that day in 1977 when I walked into my Great Aunt’s room in Des Moins, Iowa and saw her tatting as she sat on her bed. It was there when she laughed at me and told me that she didn’t have enough life left to teach me how to Tat.

I really didn’t need her to teach me, I knew “I could do that”.

When I first saw the Peterborough First Festival of Trees display 12 years ago, and all the beautiful Christmas Trees that had been designed, the thought again leaped to life in me… “I can do that!” and “I would love to do that!” came from my mouth. My wife asked me, “What don’t you?”

It is comical now when it happens over and over again… AND Last night it happened again.

I had stepped out the side door of our house and looked up. There through our large tree I could see the unbelievable moon shinning brightly. Around the moon was a hallo caused by the high, thin clouds and the mist that was hanging in the sky.

I called Alida to tell her what was happening with the moon. She stepped out and looked, exclaiming, “You should take picture of that! Get the camera!”

My doubt that the camera would pick up what our eyes were seeing told me that it would never work. “You need a better camera to capture that scene.” I told me wife.

Her answer was, “Go ahead, Try it!”

I did and what you see is what we witnessed last evening.

This moon shot is representative of that moment 45 years ago when one woman’s words struck home. “Why don’t you?” – “Why not try?” – followed by, “I believe in you and your ability!”

The woman from 45 years ago didn’t say all that… but my wife of 43 years has said them over and over again.

The Tatted Christmas Tree is done – The Peterborough Festival of Trees is its next stop

The task is done. I have just completed my Festival of Trees – Christmas Tree and it is ready to delivery.

The Peterborough Festival of Trees runs from November 23 – 28 this year (2010) at the Memorial Centre on Lansdowne Street.

12 years ago when we arrived in Peterborough we attended our first Festival of Tree. It was our first experience of attending the wonderful fund raising event held each year before Christmas. The money raised supports the Hospital, Hospice and an organization that buys medical equipment for our community.

I stood looking at the beautiful trees over the years and wondered to myself if I could ever place a tree in this fund raising event covered with the lace that I make?

Since that time I have started my Misty Hollow Woodcarving business. I have kept working at my Lace Making as well. Tatting in particular and also Honiton & Torchon Bobbin Lace.

Well the dream has come true. The Christmas Tree covered with Tatting and some woodcarving is now complete.

The tree has 155 tatted pieces on it. Actually the number is higher than that in that the Glass Balls have two or three small tatted pieces of them.

I should have started the tatting for this tree last March. But the decision to do so wasn’t made until the early part of September.

There are 50 snowflakes that took about 70 hours to make. 46 of these pieces are my own designs.

The woodcarving took another week to do along with the tatting that is placed on the angels.

I am running out of words to describe the tree – so the photos will have to do. Later I hope to have a Blog dedicated just to the Tatting and the patterns that I created.

Next Monday evening I will install the tree at the Memorial Centre. The four foot tree will stand tall beside the other trees – some of these are six and eight foot tall… and each decorated in a unique and beautiful way.

Misty Hollow Carving’s small black tree will be there along with the rest…. Shinning its little heart out.

Now the hard part is letting it go. As I have placed so many hours into the design and decoration it is hard to give it up. I will not likely hear from the person that wins this tree. I hate to just give it up… but photos help!

(The fund raising is done as people buy tickets and then place them into the box in front of the tree that they are hoping to win. Some could be bought as well… and at least one is auctioned off at some point in the week’s activities.)

Check out http://www.pfot.org/  for more information – the Peterborough Festival of Trees Web Site.

It is all about volunteers and the tremendous work that they do!

Today’s Blog Post

The Canada Forces.ca – 1-800-856-8488 – License “Canada 67449” – IDIOT!

For two days this week I sat in long meetings in Kingston dealing with how we can help in Correction Service Canada. I work alongside Parole Officers that deal with Federal Prisoners.

One day was 7 Hours in meetings, the next had 3 and at that moment we were heading home. What was happening on the Highway at that moment was not something I needed or wanted. I was tired and just wanted to get home.

My wife and I were riding in a Rental Car, a small black Kia. Compared to the Van that we normally ride in, it is small… low and close to the road…but lots of pick up and zippy to say the least.

The road we were on is the 401 Highway, the large, wide and long road that goes between Montreal, Quebec and Windsor, Ontario. Originally named the MacDonald Cartier Freeway, it serves as the main artery for traffic across Ontario. Normally it is fast and free of encumbrances.

On Wednesday around 4:00 PM that was not the case. There was construction up ahead in the distance. The two lanes of traffic were slowed to a crawl and had been for about 3 miles. As we progressed I was driving in the left lane slowly passing the semi-trailers and slower vehicles in the right lane, one by one. This had gone on for about 20 minutes or more.

There on the left, up ahead was the first warning, a large flashing arrow pointing to the right. It indicated that up ahead we were going to merge into the right lane.

I was following other vehicles that continued to pass on the left. That is until I came up to the large bus in the right lane. The two vehicles in front of me sped up slightly to get ahead of the large bus. Both passed successfully.

The final merge was more than a half kilometre up the road where the road was finally into the one, right lane. There was still time at this slower speed we were travelling for me to follow the other two cars past the bus.

But there was no way that was about to happen. The Bus Driver was apparently angry with the other two cars that had sped by… and made a huge and very stupid decision to target us in the little black car. YES I SAID TARGET!

Following the vehicle ahead I sped up enough to start the left lane pass. My vehicle’s front end was almost at the rear end of the bus when the idiot driver did his stunt swerving into over almost hitting our car. I slammed on the breaks to miss a hit and the bus went back partially into his right lane.

Okay, maybe he just moved over by accident… so I proceeded again to attempt the pass.

That was the moment I realized that it wasn’t an accidental move over into the other guys lane – ooops kind of driving problem! He immediately did it again threatening my car with his big bus rear end. He was weaving side to side as if trying to tell, “Go ahead buddy try that again and you are dead!”

But now he was straddling the two lanes by driving with white line in the centre of his bus. I was still in the left lane. Immediately beside me were two other vehicles with no place for me to go… It was the centre median, grassy area off the road to the left or a slam into the vehicles beside me to my right.

It was then that I saw the driver of the bus watching me in his large mirror. I pointed up his bus and motioned a two handed question. He stuck his left hand out of the bus and pointed his thumb down… telling me his displeasure with me and his bus hovered in this middle of two lanes for the remainder of the two lanes until the left lane was gone.

The driver to my right was shaking his head and slowed to let me get in behind the large bus – where I stayed with my heart beating very fast. I was shaken by the road rage that I experienced with that bus driver.

How stupid can one person be?

The answer is REAL STUPID. The Bus was a “Canada Forces.ca” Bus with a “1-800-856-8488” telephone number below the Web Site. His license was a “Canada” Plate – with 67449 proudly showing. The Mile marker at the side of the road was #602 and the time was 4:15 PM.

Now a professional driver of any bus is always careful of his equipment and is respectful of all the other drivers on the road… just not this guy! He was a Canada Forces.ca Jackass!

Now was he a soldier given the task to drive the big bus that day? I don’t know. I couldn’t see any uniform – but I did see his leering at me when he challenged me to try to pass him again.

Was he just a mechanic that was moving the bus empty down the road? Maybe… If he had other Military personnel on the bus, there had to be some one that outranked him and would have given him orders to cut that out… or maybe it was orders to snuff the little black car behind them….

At the stage of being threatened I was only worried for my wife and my safety. The very close call with the CanadaForces.ca Bus was not something you have time to think who was doing what on the bus.

But on the way back home there was lots of time to think… and try to figure out this idiot’s mindset.

Pause…
Two doors down from where we live in Peterborough the family lost their son in Afghanistan. I was deeply moved by what they have gone through.

I have travelled to the Highway of Heroes and stood on the Overpass with hundreds of others to honour the fallen soldier in the hearse below.

I honour the men that have given their lives. They almost have legendary status in my mind.

But at 4:15 PM, at Mile Marker 602, with a Canada Forces.ca Bus threatening your life… I have brand new feeling about one Jack Ass Driver… who I sincerely hope will be reprimanded for very stupid actions on the 401 Highway!!!

Knowing that I am just a citizen that pays their salaries, that knows nothing about their Military ways… there will likely be nothing come out of this posting anyway. They are likely way above me… and their actions can be whatever they feel it should be!

Ironically in my last Tuesday Meetings with Correctional Services Canada the discussion did get around to one of their own. Former Col. Russell Williams, the Base Commander at CFB Trenton, is a Prisoner now with Corrections Service Canada. I thought of attitudes and Williams and the stupid bus driver that nearly hit us on purpose… and it makes me sad and mad at the same time.

How dare you?????!!

As I drove on I thought more about the idiot driving that bus. He had no idea that my 89 year old mother wasn’t in the car… she could have been.

He had no idea that we didn’t have our Grandchildren in the back seat… they could have been. And he didn’t care.

What really mattered was his being right and his bloody thumb telling me to “Go to Hell!” as he swerved at me.

What will I do about it?

I will be sending this by email to a few folk to get some attention. I will try to help get the driver some help.

Was I wrong trying to pass the bus on the left lane like the other cars did? There was lots of room to do so… lots of room.

Today’s Blog Post

Offering Hope to Those that Don’t Need it

As I look back now I am amazed at the possibilities of so many that I once knew that potentially had some form of mental health problems. As a Minister in a Church I was presented with a number of different problems with the idea that I could possibly “FIX THEM”. The all knew something was wrong and that I helped people with the problems.

At times parents brought their problem teen or child to be “fixed”. They were convinced that there must be a spiritual problem in the one that they had brought. There just had to be demonic possession or at the least oppression or obsession.

After all the results that were being manifest by the person that had the problem and needed to be “fixed” was often morally in conflict with the norm of the day. The reactions were so far away from the family’s upbringing that they must be satanically influenced in some way.

If not, why would a grown woman start sleeping around with other men than her husband? That was especially true when a fellow minister’s wife started entertaining some of the town’s men into her bed. Talk about weird.

In this woman’s case they found help for her and it was diagnosed that she was suffering from what they called “Manic Depression”. The fact that they used the word ‘Manic’ made it feel even worse… closer to Maniac…!! Well her actions sure showed everyone what it was all about – A MANIAC!

The more modern way of talking about is a Bipolar Disorder that the person is afflicted with. It is far more accurate than the other broad brush definition that was used.

Now as time has gone on and newer methods of dealing with this disorder have come about, the condition that has caused so many families to suffer so greatly is better understood.

When a person has been diagnosed with MS or maybe Parkinson’s Disease people understand and show some sympathy or understanding – and maybe even support.

When a woman takes off on her family and leaves with visions and delusions of grandeur, ready to change the world, ready to make new friends, ready to start being liberated with new sexual experiences, ready to and has already condemned her husband for his abuse and interference in her progress of life… and that she has never loved him… IT IS EASY TO SEE HER AS PLAIN NUTS!... or demon possessed! Pray for her more and maybe God will set her free.

Inside her miserable experience she may well be praying harder as well… wanting to be released from the horrible feelings that she has had. Knowing full well that she is not doing things normally, and that she is blaming the whole world for the way she feels.

As I saw more and more of these kinds of people I wondered if the church world was filled with NUT CASES???!

The problem actually was that with no medical or counselling help they turned to the one last place that everyone knew would not turn them away… the church… and if the minister was open to listen which most were for a while… they would pour out a story that was simply NUTS.

As a pastor I had a fair number come and in most cases I had no tools to help them at all. I didn’t have a clue what to do.

Further to that we as Christian Ministers, generally, didn’t trust the whacko job Psychologists and Psycharitists that were available. The connection between the two groups of religious helpers and clinical, worldly helpers was not there.

As a result of having a young man by the name of Kevin in my life I came to a new understanding of “Chemical Imbalance” (Bipolar Disorder). Kevin and I found help for him to get a real/good diagnosis… and then Kevin found help.

But this was long after many years as a Minister and having a clue to how to help.
I still don’t have a clue what to do… but I know now where to find help to help my friends that are suffering.

The hidden group that I deal with more now than ever, is the trail of family ruin and destruction that follows almost every person with the bipolar disorder.

They never know how many they have destroyed along the way of their denial and avoidance to get help.

I am studying more now than ever trying to desperately to understand.

Wikipedia states the following… quote..
“Bipolar disorder or manic-depressive disorder, which is also referred to as bipolar affective disorder or manic depression, is a psychiatric diagnosis that describes a category of mood disorders defined by the presence of one or more episodes of abnormally elevated energy levels, cognition, and mood with or without one or more depressive episodes. The elevated moods are clinically referred to as mania or, if milder, hypomania. Individuals who experience manic episodes also commonly experience depressive episodes, or symptoms, or mixed episodes in which features of both mania and depression are present at the same time. These episodes are usually separated by periods of "normal" mood; but, in some individuals, depression and mania may rapidly alternate, which is known as rapid cycling. Extreme manic episodes can sometimes lead to such psychotic symptoms as delusions and hallucinations. The disorder has been subdivided into bipolar I, bipolar II, cyclothymia, and other types, based on the nature and severity of mood episodes experienced; the range is often described as the bipolar spectrum.”
End quote…

Wow what a huge pile to digest!

So why keep this one in front of my readers? What is the Big Deal with the Bipolar episodes that people have?

Families need help more than the individual does… or as much as the person with the disorder does.

When Wikipedia states that about the numbers… quote…
“Data from the United States on lifetime prevalence varies; but it indicates a rate of around 1% for bipolar I, 0.5%–1% for bipolar II or cyclothymia, and 2%–5% for subthreshold cases meeting some, but not all, criteria. The onset of full symptoms generally occurs in late adolescence or young adulthood. Diagnosis is based on the person's self-reported experiences, as well as observed behavior. Episodes of abnormality are associated with distress and disruption and an elevated risk of suicide, especially during depressive episodes. In some cases, it can be a devastating long-lasting disorder. In others, it has also been associated with creativity, goal striving, and positive achievements. There is significant evidence to suggest that many people with creative talents have also suffered from some form of bipolar disorder.”
End quote

The numbers don’t seem that high at 1%. But with every Bipolar Disorder there are 10 to 20 times that many people in the family that are deeply affected by the one person’s actions.

Now if the person with the disorder is in a place of prominence, the number can jump to 100s of times more than 1%. Just like my Pastor friend’s wife did in the small community… when she bedded the local men!

Bipolar Disorder may be the biggest societal problem yet. Our prisons have men and women that were never diagnosed before they acted out in some really weird way harming society. But then maybe they just acted that way when their own parent had the disorder – and were never helped.

In Ontario now we have been following the story of Elaine Campione, the 35 year old mother that drowned her two little girls and then tried to kill herself. She video taped the girls, alive, and herself before trying to take her own life. The events are sickening.

This is one lady that needs a huge amount of psychiatric help but never got it. To me, in my very lay-understanding way and from what I learned so far, she may well be a person suffering from a severe Bipolar Disorder.

Now all of her family and her husband’s family and the whole of our own community will suffer from one person’s very deep need.

This is a huge problem… and we need to understand.

Today’s Blog Post
Offering New Hope - Sunrise

As we were rolling along over the country roads the sun was not yet up. It was 6 AM in Ontario, November, and it was dark outside. Yet on the horizon there was already a hint of what was to come. Daylight would soon be ours – the darkness of the night would be gone.

At night it is hard to see. It is hard to move around without light of some sort. And if you live in the bush it is best to stay hidden, curled up and waiting for tomorrow when your enemies might be gone. When fear will leave… and freedom will return.

Listening to many people over the years I have been witness to the darkness in their lives. The times when the unknown smothers them, when they can move no longer freely about. Just making it through the dark time is all that they can do… and at times they wonder if it will ever end.

But that is not just in the past it is also the present for many people. They are wondering if there will ever be light again. They wonder if they will ever return to a normalcy. What should be the most wonderful days of their lives is instead filled with horror.

There are lots of reasons for this… but with no answers.

It is about that time in my own life that prayer is the only answer. Magical answers don’t come, but peace inside of me does… a little at a time. There is a small ray of hope that first pierces the darkness… then more light follows.

With that thought in mind yesterday on that dark road, the sun started to come up.
All across the fields that began to show was a wonderful mist mixed with the smoky trails from low lying farm houses.

The sun not only lit the fields but also chased every bit of darkness away. The glory that splashed on everything we watched was amazing.

I just had to stop and take photos. I only wish that I could have stayed longer at some spots and watch the entire process of the dissolving night… as fear tumbled away and new hope burst forward.

I am reading a book entitled “New Hope – for the people with Bipolar Disorder” by Fawcett, Golden and Rosenfield. It is a wonderful book about the horrific journey that folk go through when their family member is caught in the terrible trap of the Bipolar sickness.

Fawcett and Golden are the experts, the doctors that should have the answers when dealing with the sickness of the Bipolar. Rosenfield is the expert – she has suffered from this sickness all her life from what I have gathered so far.

From what I have witnessed of Rosenfield in the book so far she is doing much better than she was earlier in her life. She has found help.

Why read this anyway?

A family that I know is in throws of dealing with a family member that is deep into the Bipolar condition but has not admitted that she needs help. I truly suspect that she knows something is amiss… but in her situation she is feeling just fine. She is in control and needs no help at all. It is bizarre to watch from the sidelines. The totally out of control way of doing things is destroying any semblance of order in the family’s life.

BUT as much as she sees the light, her family is in total darkness. They are afraid of what is happening. The possibilities of losing it all is very real. The spending rate of the Bipolar victim has been burning up the family reserves at an alarming rate.

There is far more to the story that I could tell. The children are suffering in ways unimaginable. The dad is getting by one day at a time… but that is not totally correct to say it that way… most days are dark and he doesn’t get by at all. Only he knows what it feels like to just make it through one more hour of darkness.

He is my friend and I can only offer that – friendship. Hey buddy I am with you… through the darkness. That is what friends are for.

Now I know that this sounds so glum… that most will have stopped reading by this stage. I apologize for giving you a down day… BUT THERE IS ALWAYS HOPE!

As I watched the sunrise yesterday I was thinking about my friend and his small family. They were just getting up. They were going through the actions and motions of making another day come together… wondering where mommy is and hoping she was okay.

My thoughts were heavy. BUT - It was at that moment that I began to think of the fact that the light will penetrate the darkness that they face. There will be a tomorrow that is better than today. There is an opportunity that will come.

We were hurrying down the road for a 7 hour meeting that would deal with our prison system in Ontario and Canada.

Yesterday as I listened to the folk in our group I was sorting through my own situation and the family that I have written about. I was looking at my own dark times when I just don’t know what to do.

The thoughts were amazing to say the least. The light was beginning to show again.

Today we are meeting with all of the Management of all of the Federal Prison system in Ontario. It is quite an honour to say the least. These folk deal with some of the darkest areas of human behaviour… yet there is hope and light. Today we are talking about Hope… new Light… the Sunrise in humanity.

I am making these sunrise shots some of my favourite to ponder. The light is coming… the darkness and fear will have to leave.

There is hope.

Today’s Blog Post
Welcoming Sherman Lindsay into my life – Oh Boy!

I vowed that I would never let this happen again! It just hurt too much to let it happen again. I remember distinctly saying that out loud to myself as the shovel entered the cold ground. I had just burned some wood on the ground to melt the snow and the frozen ground. It was January in cold Peterborough.

After 16 years of a small fir covered dog living in our home, she had died. Her poor little body was no longer able to bounce around, chase the ball or even cuddle up without great pain. Even picking her up was very painful her. When your hands slipped around her chest she moaned and stiffened. The pain was simply too great for her.

That was the day that “Sparkle” died. She was actually “Baxter Artic Princess” – a pure bred Bichon Frise that had been with us almost every minute of a 24 hour day for 16 years. She had moved 6 times across Canada and traveled on all our holidays for 16 years plus thousands of car trips wherever we went.

Never again was my personal promise.

On Saturday night I was carrying Sherman Lindsay inside my jacket with his small head sticking out my jacket. He was about to meet his Whitby cousins, the Rourke Boys. His tiny body was shivering from the unknown, the way all little dogs do.
Sherman Lindsay is an 8 week old Jack Russell Terrier with a small amount of Beagle in his blood stream. He is the youngest of the family with Clifford and Emma being his siblings. And with me… as his Grandpa Lincoln. But he also has a Grandpa Lindsay too… and a whole slew of relatives from all over.

Earlier, just after Sherman arrived, we went to see the tiny, wiggling puppies. They offered me the opportunity to hold one. I refused. I knew my resistance was low to the idea of getting a pup. I cannot go through that again.

Now the problem is that Sherman came into my life now. Yikes. The way that he comes up and sits down in front of me, looking for a petting… it is hard to resist.

When he snuggled into my jacket and then shivered up against me…. Well it was hard to not say… sheesh!

So I welcome one little puppy into our life and home – so does the rest of the family.

Oh boy… am I ever glad all his brothers and sisters are gone!!
