Manne and Lois Idestrom need our help

Manne and I are connected by marriage.  We have known about each other for a number of years, but until he married into our family I never really go to know him personally. Manne is my friend now.

He is also a gifted musical artist with a passion for sharing his abilities and talents with a world outside of his own. In fact the entire world is in his vision.

This summer if all goes well he will travel with his family and group “Jubilance Singers and Orchestra” to Iceland, Bulgaria, Germany and Switzerland.  This is planned for the month of August.

It seems easy to write this but is far from easy to accomplish this.  It is taking a great deal of effort to get this latest World Tour together. How can he ever do it?  I am not sure that I could do it – and I am younger than Manne!

But for 30 years Manne’s group, “Jubilance Singers and Orchestra” has been covering the entire World sharing their message of joy to many lands and people. Wherever they have gone they have blessed the people in their audience.

You can read Manne’s bio by clicking on this link. He married Gunvor in 1960 and together they had three wonderful children that have grown to become talented leaders in their own worlds.

Tragedy struck Manne’s life.  After the loss of his wife Gunvor in 1992 he kept ministering… even when he received little or no support from “church officials”.  I know that part of his story well.

In 1999 Manne married Yvette, together they had a little boy Zachariah (Zach).   Tragedy again struck Manne’s life when Yvette passed away in 2004.

In 2006 he married Lois. Manne brought with him into this new marriage his 6 year old son Zach.  Lois brought with her, her mother who was in her late 90s.  Together the four of them built a new family.

Through all the tragedies and the delight of each family Manne continued with his vision to reach out to the World as a talented composer and director of sacred music.

How are we connected then?

Well it is through Lois, our fellow grandparent… my son-in-law Bill Rourke’s, Mom.

Lois, also a very talented and capable musician, has known life that has had its own share of struggles too.

It was 47 years ago, when she was 5 months pregnant, her husband Bill was flying his aircraft in the mountains of British Columbia with a fellow pastor.  Bill and Lois were the pastoral team as a talented young couple in Prince George, B.C.  That fateful day his aircraft went down because of a downdraft off a mountain and both pastors were killed.

Lois remained 40 years without marrying, looking after her “little Billy” and also her own parents, Harold and Wynona Barnes.

Lois and Manne’s stories are both unique and filled with much intrigue.

Now as Senior Citizens they are World Travelers and involved in their greatest dream together – Music!

I am writing this piece today to introduce you the reader and perhaps follower of this Blog to an amazing couple that need your support.

Recently Manne produced a new CD entitled, “Live from the Livingroom”. He sat at his own piano in his living room and played these beautiful old pieces or sacred music just for us to enjoy – forever!  In every way the CD has captured his talent and ability.

Why create a CD now at this stage of his life?

Well through the sale of this CD now Manne is raising money for his venture this summer, when he will take Zach and Lois along with him to Iceland, Bulgaria, Germany and Switzerland.  Each member of the group Jubilance must raise their own support for each trip they make – and Manne is no different.

YOU CAN HELP today!

The CD is given to each contributor for a $25 donation.  With the $25 donation you will receive a CD and a $20 tax-receipt for your income tax.

For a gift of $100 or more you will receive a tax receipt for the full amount and also a CD.

This is a great bargain – believe me. There is way more than $25 worth of great listening on this CD!!!  We bought one and are thoroughly enjoying it!!!!

Why not buy six or more – one for each of your friends for Christmas!!!?

I enjoyed it so much that I created a short video that gives you an opportunity to hear Manne playing on his 75 year old piano – by simply clicking here “Live from the Livingroom”.

My dream is to help the Idestroms raise the money they need as soon as possible.  As of a few days ago they are at the halfway mark of the approximately $6000 that they need.

Whale One – Man Zero – game over

I love canoeing. Gliding along the top of the shimmering water is the most peaceful thing in the world. Can you imagine that with me for a few moments.

Sliding along in a kayak is cool as well… closer to the water and even more streamlined than the fiberglass vessel I have.  Can you picture that as well?

Now one more for the imagination station of your mind… move up to a little larger vessel… say a 22-foot Grady-White vessel – now that would be amazing – WOW!

It was amazing for Ray Boyd as well, right up until the water below him exploded with the fury of a volcano. At that moment he was propelled forward through his windshield on the boat, knocked unconscious and in terrible pain. He was able to make it to shore and get help after the “explosion” – from what the story writer stated.

The story suddenly change one of “my bucket list” things to do before I die.

Ray Boyd’s boat which is about 22 feet long had been in the way of a breaching hump back whale – likely about 45 feet(15 meters) long and weighing in at 88,184 pounds (40 tonnes).

Whale One – Man Zero – game over.

While I feel for Ray and know that he has gone through extensive surgery – I also feel for the whale.  For thousands of years they have done their breaching – and there has been no boats or men above them.

The writer, Sian Thomson, in his article Man injured when whale, boat collide” states that – quote “"This accident is a good reason for people to take notice," said Christie McMillan, president of MERS which is conducting research on the resurgence of humpbacks. "These whales surface unpredictably and they seem to be oblivious to boats."

Humpback whales breach for a variety of reasons, to relieve themselves of parasites, to scare off predators and probably just for fun and games.” End quote.

Whoa! Change the “Bucket List”!

It has given me a whole new thought about the glistening bay, shimmering waters, gliding through the quiet waters. Do this I am sitting in a very small water craft and I am not a fish… but a man that has to work at swimming.

Ray Boyd I certainly feel for you bro… and hope you are on the mend.

Bucket List item “Go whale watching up close..” is also lower on the list now.  I am changing it to whale watching from a distance with a Telephoto Lens on my camera!

Thanks Sian for a great report!

Abuse of the Elderly at St Joseph at Fleming – and the other Senior’s Care Homes in Peterborough

I am sickened today with the videos that I watched and the reports that were presented by the Media.  A senior lady was abused and hurt by a “care worker” at St. Joseph at Fleming, a long term care facility in our area.

The “care worker” was relieved of her duties with pay.  Go figure – they were still paying this dear lady – the “care worker” – after taking her out of duty.  Paying for what? More abuse – or because they are afraid of a lawsuit?

But the reports are flying now and perhaps she is not being paid at all. Who knows?  You cannot find out anything at all because it is all covered.

The one video showing a Ministry of Health and Long Term care turning her back and refusing to look at the video just about summed it all up. That is what the officials have done for a long time.  The Ontario Government has continually cut back expecting more to be done with less.

Ta Da!  Here dear Liberals of Ontario are your final test results. We told you it would happen and now it has… and your official walk away with her hand waved in a dismissive way.

That part was even more disconcerting than the “care worker” shoving the shitty wipe in the resident’s face!

People are outraged that it happened to this dear lady.

Well folks wake up. It happens in a lots of senior’s homes. These folk work for next to nothing and work alone – under lots of pressure. They need their smoke breaks and their own relief from stupid old people that keep crapping in their pants.  And these people are pissed!

I know of at least two other stories that come to mind right now – that happened to parents of friends of mine.

The home they were in was one of the best.  But fortunately the dear old people are dead. The family members never have to go back to see the abuse or possible results of abuse again. They mourn for their mom or dad… and never see the idiots that forced their parents to do horrible things.

Horrible things?

Yep – like put my friend’s mom up against a wall, away from others, when she was eating. The reason?  Well you see the old gal can’t remember anything… won’t talk… and most likely won’t cooperate with the “care worker” that needed her smoke break!

Why didn’t she complain about it? Well the daughter did.  And at great risk. If the daughter is not there the great risk is that the “care worker” will abuse her mother in retaliation.

Thank God – Mom is dead!

But what about the others in that home that have to stay alive for some reason or other – and the very same workers still work there!  GOD HELP these residents!

And that home where my friend’s mom at was not the one where the “care worker” shoved the dirty wipe in the face of the old lady.

Dear “Care Worker” – you disgust me!

Dear Officials of the Government – you disgust me even more!  You let it happen.

So why do I care?  I have been one of the local volunteers that regularly speak about Elder Abuse.  Go figure – you can talk until you are blue in the face and none of it gets through… until someone puts a hidden video camera in the room… then everyone blames someone else.

Come on idiots – get your act together.

My turn will be coming soon. And if any of you think for one minute you will treat me like that – Gog Help YOU!

The Crazy Cookies, the Frog Prince and The Dreamers Café

Yesterday I ate one of the 92,000 Crazy Cookies that have been sold from the Dreamers Café in Port Hope, Ontario.  Mmmm MMm MM! There is nothing like this cookie in all of Canada, North America or maybe even the WORLD.  This is the perfect cookie.

But we didn’t start with the cookie, the cookie was dessert.  Our Main Course was a Gigantic Piece of Apple Pie a la mode. And it is the biggest piece of pie that you find anywhere.  It is way more than one person can possibly eat alone. So we share.

The Dreamers Café is situated on the corner of Walton and Queen Street in Downtown Port Hope.  With its Victoria style decoration inside and its wrought iron tables & chairs outside, it is totally unique in every way.

We discovered the Dreamers Café while searching for Antique shops on an afternoon drive. While wondering through the area it seemed like a good idea to have a hot coffee that afternoon. That is when we walked into Roger Bernard’s unique place.  You can read more about Roger and his delightful place at http://www.dreamerscafe.ca/

I also began another adventure in the world of “restorative art” at the Dreamers Café as well. As part of the Victorian décor there is a Frog Prince that supervises and oversees all of the events and visitors at the Dreamers Café.  Somehow a child was playing with the Frog Prince and smashed his face. A huge chunk fell from the dear Prince’s cheek.  Being made of a finely, poured clay it didn’t take much to mess him up. But at the present moment in time he is resting in the Misty Hollow hospital for tired and broken critters.  His cheek is healing very well.

This week his cheek will look like new again. And I will be back at the Dreamers Café having one more Crazy Cookie with a hot cup of coffee.

I can’t wait.

Are you ready for “Google Glass”

Two days ago I wrote of Mayor Rob Ford’s latest dilemma with the video tape that was made of some guys smoking Crack Cocaine.  The folk selling the video want a lot of money.  The fact came out in the video that Mayor Ford heard the cell phone ring and stated, “That thing better not be on…” – referring to the cell phone.

Well hang on Mayor Ford and/or anyone else that doesn’t wish to video taped or put on to any electronic devise.  Here comes “Google Glass”.

Here is a photo of a dude wearing the new apparatus.

Can you believe that?

We older folks thought it was something else when the Dick Tracy Watch was suggested in the comics of long ago. Then we lived long enough to actually see and perhaps even use a mechanism that is right out of the comics.

But now they have a new gismo that ride on your glasses – or perhaps acts like your glasses (or looks like). With a simple action to activate it the camera on board will record and then transmit whatever you are looking at.

Watch out Mayor Rob.

There was a song that we sang away back in Sunday School that stated or warned my body parts of what was happening(way past 69 years ago).  It simply stated, “Be careful little hands what you do, be careful little hands what you, there’s a Father up above, looking down in love, be careful little hands what you do.”  Then we added more body parts to the verses that followed – etc.

“Google Glass” will be transforming some dates that people go on. They will add to the casino business or take from it. And so on…

Can you think back over the last few days to all that you saw?  When you looked was it the same place that others were looking?  Or was it something that you shouldn’t have look at?

I know I saw some things that were not so good for my appetite… oh boy!

“Here is looking at you” has a whole new connotation.

Politics anyone…Mayor Rob Ford is doing it again… or maybe that is the reporters are doing it again

Hokey Mokey… the Toronto Star reporters are on Mayor Rob Ford’s trail again!  What next?

Well it seems that there is a Cell Phone Owner that has on his or her Cell Phone an original video of Mayor Rob Ford smoking Crack Cocaine.  Wowsers!!! What next?!?

This Mayor of Toronto has gotten into more scrapes and binds in his short life than any Mayor in history… I am sure. At least there have been more people out to try to get him on whatever they can – and then try to nail the sucker to the wall.

Rob Ford has had problem over the years I am sure.  But until he ran for Mayor and then won, he was having his personal problems all by himself.  No one would know – just like they don’t know about my personal problems.

Step up to leadership and any fool knows that you are ripe for ridicule… for investigations that are nutso… and a life of deep introspection by others not by yourself.

Now a lawyer hired by Rob Ford to take care of this latest brouhaha is writing to Bloggers and Posters of anything about Mayor Robert Ford… with a warning.  Here is the one warning that Gawker posted… quote

Greetings;I am a lawyer, and have been contacted by Mayor Ford's office in reference to your indicating you will post a photo of Mayor Ford smoking crack cocaine. Mayor Ford denies such took place, and if such posting occurs,it is false and defamatory, and you will be held legally accountable. In reference to the photo, you wish to publish, Mayor Ford has his photo taken daily, sometimes with others.

If the person you mention is now deceased,it is sad, regardless of his alleged background.

Please govern yourself accordingly.

Dennis Morris.

End quote

Now granted – this post from a “supposed Lawyer” – Dennis Morris could be bull too. Lots of typos in the text!

Please note Mr. Morris I didn’t re-post the photo here – the one of Rob Ford slung between two thugs. I didn’t do it because I know that Photoshop Photos are too easy to produce to fool even you!

I just look on as “a former person that lived in Toronto” and shake my head. What next!?

After all the Maple Leaf’s lost their game and there is nothing more to complain or write about – than Mayor Rob Ford!

Nope I am not his fan. I don’t know the dude at all. I feel for him and his family who are also constantly on parade all the time.

My question today is – “Who would ever want to be Mayor?”  You are definitely out of your mind if you step up to any public office or position!  You are definitely nuts!

Now take Justin Trudeau for instance… and the fact that he was a Drama Teacher and Camp Counsellor… the Conservative Party and already tearing the guys life to bits because he is giving them a run for their money!

I mean who would ever step forward now!!!?

Leaving my Senior Friends at The Gates Art Gallery in Brighton

The deed is done.  I am pleased with the outcome. It looks great!  Thank you Katie and BAC(Brighton Arts Council) for believing in me and my art.

Over the next five weeks or so people from all over will have an opportunity to experience the Art of Murray Lincoln… at least six pieces of the Art that I do.

I explained to Katie and her team at The Gates Art Gallery in Brighton, Ontario that these pieces of art are real stories. These pieces represent real people that were or are senior citizens in my life. Some are still close to us, others have passed on and left their story with me to tell.

In 1985 I was encouraged by another Senior to go back to school again and take an amazing course of study in Gerontology. At the time it seemed a little odd to do so. I was working with primarily teenagers – NOT Senior Citizens.

I followed Howard Honsinger’s advice and entered into a whole new world of study. I began looking into my own aging process. Wow! What a journey it was since that beginning point of looking forward and backwards at the same time.

During the course of study we were guided into the writing of a “Life Line”. In this program we were instructed to sit with a Senior and do an interview that wouldn’t look or feel like an interview.  It would be a “friendly visit” where we would listen to what was being shared with us – their life story.  And without making notes, I simply listened to what I heard.  Each person became a treasured story that I will keep forever.  Later we would write our final paper on what we heard and how we felt.

Some of the stories were very hard to listen to and having to deal with the tragedies later on was even more difficult.  You knew the pain of each person as they shared their life with you. You heard of the great joy as well.

The truth of the matter was that few people ever sat with these Seniors or even asked who they were.

A quick, “How are you doing today Bill? It is sunny outside, you should go sit outside.” requires no response except a grunt from Bill.  And Bill had a huge story to tell if someone would just listen.

I listened and then thought a lot about what was said. Then I created the Mixed Media characters that are now sitting in The Gates art Gallery.

I invite you to look through the photos below, and then if you have time go meet my Senior friends at the Gallery.  They would love to tell you their stories – if you have time.
