Medicinal Practices and Apparatus of the 1800s – Part Two
As Nancy McLeod was making her presentation she wove all kinds of interesting facts and information into her talk. Most of what she spoke about is listed below for your information and interest. (Some of this I wrote of earlier)
Next time you're washing your hands and the water temperature isn't just how you like it, think about how things used to be. Here are some facts about the 1500s.
Most people got married in June because they took their yearly bath in May and still smelled pretty good by June. However, they were starting to smell, so brides carried a bouquet of flowers to hide the body odor.
Baths consisted of a big tub filled with hot water. The man of the house had the privilege of the nice clean water, then all the other sons and men, then the women and finally the children -- last of all the babies. By then the water was so dirty you could actually lose someone in it. Hence the saying, "Don't throw the baby out with the bath water."
Houses had thatched roofs -- thick straw -- piled high, with no wood underneath. It was the only place for animals to get warm, so all the dogs, cats and other small animals (mice, bugs) lived in the roof. When it rained it became slippery and sometimes the animals would slip and fall off the roof -- hence the saying "It's raining cats and dogs."
There was nothing to stop things from falling into the house. This posed a real problem in the bedroom where bugs and other droppings could really mess up your nice clean bed. Hence, a bed with big posts and a sheet hung over the top afforded some protection. That's how canopy beds came into existence.
The floor was dirt. Only the wealthy had something other than dirt, hence the saying "dirt poor."
The wealthy had slate floors that would get slippery in the winter when wet, so they spread thresh (straw) on the floor to help keep their footing. As the winter wore on, they kept adding more thresh until when you opened the door it would all start slipping outside. A piece of wood was placed in the entranceway, hence, a "thresh hold."
In those old days, they cooked in the kitchen with a big kettle that always hung over the fire. Every day they lit the fire and added things to the pot. They ate mostly vegetables and did not get much meat. They would eat the stew for dinner, leaving leftovers in the pot to get cold overnight and then start over the next day. Sometimes the stew had food in it that had been there for quite awhile. Hence the rhyme, "peas porridge hot, peas porridge cold, peas porridge in the pot nine days old."
Sometimes they could obtain pork, which made them feel quite special. When visitors came over, they would hang up their bacon to show off. It was a sign of wealth that a man "could bring home the bacon." They would cut off a little to share with guests and would all sit around and "chew the fat."
Those with money had plates made of pewter. Food with a high acid content caused some of the lead to leach onto the food, causing lead poisoning and death. This happened most often with tomatoes, so for the next 400 years or so, tomatoes were considered poisonous.
Most people did not have pewter plates, but had trenchers, a piece of wood with the middle scooped out like a bowl. Often trenchers were made from stale bread which was so old and hard that they could be used for quite some time. Trenchers were never washed and a lot of times worms and mold got into the wood and old bread. After eating off wormy, moldy trenchers, one would get "trench mouth."
Bread was divided according to status. Workers got the burnt bottom of the loaf, the family got the middle, and guests got the top, or "upper crust."
Lead cups were used to drink ale or whiskey. The combination would sometimes knock them out for a couple of days. Someone walking along the road would take them for dead and prepare them for burial. They were laid out on the kitchen table for a couple of days and the family would gather around and eat and drink and wait and see if they would wake up. Hence the custom of holding a "wake."
England is old and small and the local folks started running out of places to bury people. So they would dig up coffins and would take the bones to a "bone-house" and reuse the grave. When reopening these coffins, 1 out of 25 coffins were found to have scratch marks on the inside and they realized they had been burying people alive. So they thought they would tie a string on the wrist of the corpse, lead it through the coffin and up through the ground and tie it to a bell. Someone would have to sit out in the graveyard all night (the "graveyard shift") to listen for the bell; thus, someone could be "saved by the bell" or was considered a "dead ringer."
Thanks Nancy – Great stuff!

Today’s Blog Post
MY granddaughter looked at me like I was insane and stated the obvious, “Why would anyone do that. That is crazy! What was wrong with them?!?”
I had told her about the amazing presentation by Nancy McLeod at the seniors group the other day. Nancy had spoken about the Medicines and Cures of the 1800s. She had also shown her collection of apparatus that were used by the medical experts – Doctors – or that age.
I had described to Emma the use of the drill kind of tool(pictured above) that was used to drill a hole into the skull and take a piece of bone out when a person had a headache. Then the small pieces of bone fragments were fished out of the opening and that were laying on the exposed piece of the brain. All the while this was being done, there were no rubber gloves, no “wash ups” before surgery and absolutely no idea of that Germs even existed – or that infection was possible and could kill the person.
The fact is that they did use the “infection” idea as part of a cure. The person with the hole drilled in their skull had puss leaking from the opening. The person was turned over to allow as much puss to drain from the opening as possible to get the bad stuff out.
And this happened over the next year as the person was expected to remain in bed.
It was about then that Emma looked at me in total disgust and made her pronouncement.
At 13 years old and living in 2011 she already knows better and has a better ability than most practicing doctors of the 1800s… specially the nut cases that drilled holes in someone’s skull and drained the puss for a year later.
I couldn’t tell you or Emma all that Nancy told us. There was just too much to tell. Nancy had presented an amazing display of personal knowledge and information.
I am simply going to present a host of photos that I took and make some small notations of what each item was used for.
I am very glad that I live in 2011. I am amazed that any our family lived through the 1800s to even make it possible for me to be conceived and be born. That is the amazing miracle that our family survived what was offered.
And finally – I will never again complain about waiting for treatment in our local Emergency Department… or a stay in the Hospital. I am thankful for what is done for me… and the knowledge that they will not drill or drain my brain when I get a headache.

Bad pan that was used for people confined to a hospital bed. Contents were then thrown out the window of the hospital.
Above is Blue Ray Machine - part of the Quackery Medicine machines that did nothing except extract cash from some one's pocket.
The Enema Pump - it was thought that everyone's Bowls needed to be cleaned regularly and regular Enemas were practiced by almost everyone. You got to wonder where the cowboys carried them Enema pumps while so far from home. Maybe that is why there was always beans cooking over the fire.
The Powdered Medicine chest - when the Doctor made the decision what was wrong with the person medicines were prepared and then given to the patient. Opium and opiates were great help as well as Heroin.
Everyone in the 1800s and earlier knew full well that Bad Blood was the root cause of any ailment. So tools were developed to let the blood out - hopefully you were able to get the right "Bad Blood". If not you tried and tried again. President George Washington died after a number of Blood Lettings - he just never felt better - so they let out more and more of his blood. Now that is STUPID but it was what the Doctor ordered. I believe in second opinions - do you?
Above - Full brain surgery kit - to help relieve headaches - which may well be caused by a need for reading glasses... but glasses were not yet invented to it was better to drill into the skull and let the puss out...
Above - tools from left to right - tooth extractors beside the multi-blade cutting tool for letting blood - then bottom two tools for letting blood - slashes were made into the veins on the arm...

Very effective presentation of the apparatus and materials used to operate - not sterile at all
The surgeon's kit - saws used to amputate legs and arms -etc - never washed or sterilized
These apparatus were used to treat STD in men. The top one with the bulb on the end was for soldiers, the bottom one was for sailors. Mixtures such as Silver Nitrate was infected up into the penis. The resulting inflammation and secretion was the cure. Now every man reading this will be cringing as he imagines the possibility.

The Power of a Dove
Today was to be the day that our Huge Tree was to receive its pruning job. It was to have its haircut.
The tree is a Manitoba Maple that stands about 65 high beside our driveway.
Today our new friend Anthony Weinczok, from ACE Tree Care, showed up to take down some of the large limbs on the tree.
Anthony brought out his equipment and then put on his safety equipment. He was ready to climb up and begin the cutting that was needed.
He was up a short distance and had cut some small branches that could have blocked his way upward. It was then that he stopped and said, “Oh, Oh I have problem.” Then he pointed at the tree.
There in the crutch of the tree was beautiful Morning Dove looking at him intently from her small nest. The main branch that he was going to work on sat immediately to the right of her nest. Climbing the tree or even starting the chain saw would have meant that the nest would be disturbed.
Worse yet… just below Mrs. Dove there were two young ones. Their tails were sticking out and she was protecting them with her body. The babies are just a little smaller than she is – but still babies.
Anthony came up close to her to see if she would move. His nose was within six inches of her… and she never budged. This little lady was going no where… and was just staring the Wood Cutter down.
Mrs. Dove won. Anthony backed out of the tree and said, “I just can’t do it! We will have to wait until they leave the nest.”
Anthony lost a whole day’s work today all because Mrs. Dove looked at him.
Anthony of ACE Tree Care – cares… he is great man.
He could have easily pulled her off the nest and then let the Baby Doves drop. To help them on their way – it would have been easy to send them to Dove Heaven. But Anthony cared too much.
I am amazed that one young man cared that much. Most of the hulking tree arborists that I have seen need only one thing – to get paid.
It cost Anthony today… in terms of getting the job done and receiving the money that he needs to live on. But Anthony card more about three small creatures than the money.
You and I need to be impressed with this young man. And I want to recommend him as some one that cares… for trees and for creation. You may need an arborist some day. Call him!

Rolling in the Deep – we could have had it all
For days now I have had a song and its words rolling through my mind. I learned the song over the past few weeks as we traveled in the car and while I worked in my workshop. I found the song on a Pop Radio station in our area 93.3 FM (for the people in our area)
It is not a song that some one 67 years traditionally has as a favorite – or even tunes their radio to… over and over again. But today it is one of my favorites for sure – for a special reason.
Some of my younger friends know the song. But others have no idea what it is about or have ever heard it. That group would be the friends that are my age. They are oblivious to what is written or songs like this.
Yet some of the friends that are my age have grandkids that know this song only too well.
About a month ago I discovered “Adel”, the new, rising, singing star – yet she had been around on the music scene since 2008… and is only 23 years old this year (born on May 5, 1988).
So what is the song you ask?
The answer, “Rolling in the Deep”. (I have listed a few different Videos below that you can listen and watch, as well as the lyrics that you can read below as you listen to the music.)
For me this song is haunting now… and deeply moving for this “now generation”. And this is for a very special reason. Here goes…
Try to follow me…
For the last two Wednesdays the point of the song hit home. I am sure that I cannot tell you how deeply that has been with a few words that I will use here. But I have to try.
Each Wednesday I am situated at a local mall, The Peterborough Square, in downtown Peterborough. I sit in front of the Crop Circles store (working alongside this business) at a table in the middle of the mall and demonstrate my creative things.
I show my Tatting and try to interest people in Tatting. I show my wood work, my art work and the number of different things that people may be interested in on any particular day.
Hundreds of people stop by to speak to me. It is a unique place to have as an opportunity for engagement with our community.
A week ago Sara stopped by to speak with me. She brought a friend with her who is her age. I believe that Sara and this girl had attended school together.
Sara needed to talk. She was upset with what had happened in our community in the days before. A girl she knew had been murdered by her former common law partner and the father of this girl’s son. At that point the police were just finding the girl’s body but couldn’t identify her remains.
Yesterday Sara came back to talk to me alone. The body had been found. They took a number of days identify who it was. Her ex-partner killed her.
Sara had been to the visitation leading up to the funeral for her friend Joanne Mackenzie. And yesterday afternoon, Wednesday July 13, Joanne’s body was to be laid to rest. Sara was on her way to attend her funeral to say her last good bye.
Sara was deeply shaken with the events of the week or so now.
Sara personally has difficulties with the father of her baby boy. Now that guy refuses to take any responsibility and denies that he is the father of Baby Eric. Sheesh!
Joanne also had a similar experience with her ex-partner. She got pregnant, had the baby and he left her. They were in a custody battle when her dead beat guy killed her.
The world that these young moms have to deal with is very difficult.
It all sounds complicated I know. Sorry. I hope I kept the thoughts straight for you to understand.
As Sara and I talked yesterday as we were sitting outside Trillium College in the Peterborough Square.
Sara told me how she is entering a program at Trillium in the fall to take the next step and finish more education. She needs one more course before she can enter the College Program she hopes to take. She can take the course but it costs $250. Sara doesn’t have a job and can’t get one. She has no extra money on her small allowance she gets to look after her baby Eric.
And there are dozens upon dozens of young moms with babies that would love to work to make a few dollars – but it seems that no one will hire them. Businesses will hire younger ladies and have no kids – but not Sara and her friends.
Joanne had a plan as well. She had hoped to make some huge changes in her life as well. But she is dead now.
Sara, her friend, and Joanne are almost the same age as “Adel” and Adel’s song “Rolling in the Deep” makes perfect sense. It is their song… and it almost tears out my heart as I listen to it.
At this point I am overwhelmed by what I have heard, what I know and what I feel. I am “Rolling in the Deep”…. God help these girls and send some one that will help them… some how and in some way.

The Lyrics to Rolling in the Deep
Songwriters: EPWORTH, PAUL / ADKINS, ADELE
There's a fire starting in my heart
Reaching a fever pitch, and it's bringing me out the dark
Finally I can see you crystal clear
Go ahead and sell me out and I'll lay your ship bare
See how I'll leave with every piece of you
Don't underestimate the things that I will do
There's a fire starting in my heart
Reaching a fever pitch
And it's bringing me out the dark
The scars of your love remind me of us
They keep me thinking that we almost had it all
The scars of your love, they leave me breathless
I can't help feeling
We could have had it all
Rolling in the deep
(Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
You had my heart inside of your hand
(You're gonna wish you never had met me)
And you played it to the beat
(Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
Baby, I have no story to be told
But I've heard one of you
And I'm gonna make your head burn
Think of me in the depths of your despair
Making a home down there
As mine sure won't be shared
The scars of your love remind me of us
They keep me thinking that we almost had it all
The scars of your love, they leave me breathless
I can't help feeling
We could have had it all
Rolling in the deep
(Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
You had my heart inside of your hand
(You're gonna wish you never had met me)
And you played it to the beat
(Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
We could have had it all
Rolling in the deep
You had my heart inside of your hand
But you played it with a beating
Throw your soul through every open door
Count your blessings to find what you look for
Turn my sorrow into treasured gold
You pay me back in kind and reap just what you sow
(You're gonna wish you never had met me)
We could have had it all
(Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
We could have had it all
(You're gonna wish you never had met me)
It all, it all, it all
(Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
We could have had it all
(You're gonna wish you never had met me)
Rolling in the deep
(Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
You had my heart inside of your hand
(You're gonna wish you never had met me)
And you played it to the beat
(Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
You could have had it all
(You're gonna wish you never had met me)
Rolling in the deep
(Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
You had my heart inside of your hand
(You're gonna wish you never had met me)
But you played it
You played it
You played it
You played it to the beat.

At this point I am overwhelmed by what I have heard, what I know and what I feel. I am “Rolling in the Deep”…. God help these girls and send some one that will help them… some how and in some way.

Rolling in the Deep
The Lyrics to Rolling in the Deep
Songwriters: EPWORTH, PAUL / ADKINS, ADELE
There's a fire starting in my heart
Reaching a fever pitch, and it's bringing me out the dark
Finally I can see you crystal clear
Go ahead and sell me out and I'll lay your ship bare
See how I'll leave with every piece of you
Don't underestimate the things that I will do
There's a fire starting in my heart
Reaching a fever pitch
And it's bringing me out the dark
The scars of your love remind me of us
They keep me thinking that we almost had it all
The scars of your love, they leave me breathless
I can't help feeling
We could have had it all
Rolling in the deep
(Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
You had my heart inside of your hand
(You're gonna wish you never had met me)
And you played it to the beat
(Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
Baby, I have no story to be told
But I've heard one of you
And I'm gonna make your head burn
Think of me in the depths of your despair
Making a home down there
As mine sure won't be shared
The scars of your love remind me of us
They keep me thinking that we almost had it all
The scars of your love, they leave me breathless
I can't help feeling
We could have had it all
Rolling in the deep
(Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
You had my heart inside of your hand
(You're gonna wish you never had met me)
And you played it to the beat
(Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
We could have had it all
Rolling in the deep
You had my heart inside of your hand
But you played it with a beating
Throw your soul through every open door
Count your blessings to find what you look for
Turn my sorrow into treasured gold
You pay me back in kind and reap just what you sow
(You're gonna wish you never had met me)
We could have had it all
(Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
We could have had it all
(You're gonna wish you never had met me)
It all, it all, it all
(Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
We could have had it all
(You're gonna wish you never had met me)
Rolling in the deep
(Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
You had my heart inside of your hand
(You're gonna wish you never had met me)
And you played it to the beat
(Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
You could have had it all
(You're gonna wish you never had met me)
Rolling in the deep
(Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
You had my heart inside of your hand
(You're gonna wish you never had met me)
But you played it
You played it
You played it
You played it to the beat.

Today I am hopefully completing my Second Tea Pot that is decorated with Tatting.
BTW – it was on a Saturday, 43 years ago this early morning that my wife started her first labour pains… that afternoon our first born baby arrived! Happy Birthday Dana Lynn Lincoln Lindsay!

Today’s Blog Post
Come on that is Ridiculous!
This story is crazy! That is how I felt when I picked up one newspaper. They print – or fill – columns to fill space. But then some of the stories are actually true… and you really got to wonder at the person’s head space when you read what they decided to do.
Below are some examples to think about.
Story One
When Juliet Jacobs found out she had lung cancer, she was terrified, but realized that her hope lay in getting the best treatment medicine could offer. So she got a second opinion, then a third. In February of 2010, she ended up at Duke University, where she entered a research study whose promise seemed stunning.
Doctors would assess her tumor cells, looking for gene patterns that would determine which drugs would best attack her particular cancer. She would not waste precious time with ineffective drugs or trial-and-error treatment. The Duke program — considered a breakthrough at the time — was the first fruit of the new genomics, a way of letting a cancer cell’s own genes reveal the cancer’s weaknesses.
But the research at Duke turned out to be wrong. Its gene-based tests proved worthless, and the research behind them was discredited. Ms. Jacobs died a few months after treatment, and her husband and other patients’ relatives are suing Duke. (There is more to the story – see link below)
It seems to me that I will rush to the best present program for help – not something new and yet to be sure of – if my condition was like Juliet’s
Story Two
PULASKI, Va. — In May 2009, Sam French hit bottom, once again. A relative found him face down in his carport “talking gibberish,” according to court records. He later told medical personnel that he had been conversing with a bear in his backyard and hearing voices. His family figured he had gone off his medication for bipolar disorder, and a judge ordered him involuntarily committed — the fourth time in five years he had been hospitalized by court order.
When Mr. French’s daughter discovered that her father’s commitment meant it was illegal for him to have firearms, she and her husband removed his cache of 15 long guns and three handguns, and kept them after Mr. French was released in January 2010 on a new regime of mood-stabilizing drugs.
Across the country, states are increasingly allowing people like Mr. French, who lost their firearm rights because of mental illness, to petition to have them restored. (There is more to the story – see link below)
Duh! Do think that you would be fighting for the rights of Mr. French to carry a gun? Only in the USA! Right? Nope we allow people with some major mental conditions such as Bipolar disorder to drive as well. I know one person that drives and at times has no idea where she is. She calls home or friends for help! Yep! It is true!
Story Three
WASHINGTON — Alarmed by a shortage of primary care doctors, Obama administration officials are recruiting a team of “mystery shoppers” to pose as patients, call doctors’ offices and request appointments to see how difficult it is for people to get care when they need it.
The administration says the survey will address a “critical public policy problem”: the increasing shortage of primary care doctors, including specialists in internal medicine and family practice. It will also try to discover whether doctors are accepting patients with private insurance while turning away those in government health programs that pay lower reimbursement rates. (There is more to the story – see link below)
Double Duh!
Our waiting rooms are already filled with sick people and it is hard to get help. It is not fair to take up space when it is no needed. Unless you are ready to install camera’s in the doctor’s office to watch his every move… this idea is ridiculous.
Maybe it is just the heat that has got to me… but some of this seems rather stupid! Wouldn’t you agree.
I am sorry for Juliet’s family loss… and for Mr. French’s problem… but Obama’s ideas… come on!

Today’s Blog Post
I want what I want and I want it now! I am a S-E-N-I-O-R!
Yesterday I was scheduled to Volunteer at Lang Pioneer Village and Museum. It was to be a mere 20 minute drive to the Village which is just east of our city of Peterborough. But it didn’t turn out to be a mere 20 minutes but rather 45 minutes to get there. Yikes – I was almost late getting to my post.
What happened?
Well all our roads and streets were closed and blocked off by what seemed to be an eternal series Police road closures. Worse yet there was no directions as to how to get out of the city to the east with the road closures. It was the Triathlon with Tri-athletes invading our city. You know the Bicycle race that includes the swimming and running as well as the grueling cycling that goes a huge distance all over the country.
And wherever it goes the streets and roads will be interrupted severely. That was the case in Peterborough for sure on Sunday morning.
Now some of you have never been to our fair city before. Almost down the middle of our city runs a large river north to south. The forefathers allowed the building of our city to happen on both sides of the river.
Whenever you go east from our city you need to go over the river – if you live on the west side of it like we do.
I crossed the bridge over the river to find the road blocked – and all traffic being sent south – somewhere.
I knew of another road that would take me east through the community. It circled and wound through homes that are just east of the river. Nope that didn’t work either – that road was also blocked by the Police and I could see cyclists swishing by that road’s exit.
Now how do you get east of our city at that point?
No hints from anyone. No help from police or race organizers either. You are on your own. The thought of driving further south on winding and sometimes confusing streets in unknown housing was not there. But in fact after winding back and forth looking for a way out I found a familiar street and headed for the main highway - #115 eats bound. At this point I am way south of where I had to be before leaving the city, completely frustrated and could care even less about Tri-athletes and their stupid race… WORSE Yet I was going to be late for my post in volunteering.
I am not just a volunteer at this point, I am now a cranky old senior that is totally frustrated with what I see and have gone through. This is one big pain in the senior butt of mine.
I arrived at my Volunteer station, hot, late and frustrated. I have never tried so hard to do any job yet.
The day at Lang wasn’t good for the Village that had planned one of its best and biggest days of the year. At the Village the “15TH ANNUAL ANTIQUE & CLASSIC CAR SHOW” took place. This has drawn hundreds in years past. But not this year – everyone seemed to stay away. The attendance was way down from what I witnessed. It was nothing at all like last year.
I am sure that there were still thousands of people wondering around in Peterborough thoroughly frustrated with the hot and sweaty Tri-athletes.
But it was not just Peterborough, it was also the side roads and country roads of all the areas south and around Lang Village. The cyclists were zooming and buzzing everywhere. The fast ones were out front and the slow ones and wounded ones were way behind… or maybe dead in the ditch.
Now it wasn’t just the tri-athletes and their fun day… it was also the fun day downtown in Peterborough where the huge Ribfest was taking place. Fat people eating fat food and having a ball in our downtown area. The downtown business folk had planned this for ages.
Further to that another small community just north of our city carried out their super Jazz celebration on the waterfront in Lakefield. It was there that hundreds upon hundreds gathered for a cool time beside the lake.
Yikes! The hot and old Hastie Carpenter Shop in Lang Pioneer Village and Museum could not really hold a candle to all that stuff taking place on Sunday, July 10th, 2011.
Fortunate for me I was outside with my Spring Pole Lathe, under a huge shade tree and talking to dozens upon dozens of people about the old days. But back in Peterborough there were many of my potential clients that were still wondering how to get out of the city let alone back home again.
Did you need to know all that? Not likely. But you should notice one important fact. What matters to me is all that matters in the whole world. I am a Senior and I am not interested in nothing but my world! Tri-athletes or Ribfesters or Jazzers don’t matter – only what I want and need is all that matters now. I have earned my right to be cantankerous – I AM A SENIOR and I want what I want and I want it now!
Hokey Mokey – I am old! And it is likely good that the Police shut down the roads for the sake of the Tri-athletes – some might have been run over with the seniors on the road yesterday.
