Today’s Blog Post
(Photo borrowed from National Geographic - it looked similar to this - but my little camera couldn't do it)
Lunar Eclipse 2010 – Peterborough Ontario – Minus 10 C Brrr
I did it! I saw it! I expect my world to change overnight! And what I saw and did – will not happen again for 456 years!!! The last time it happened was in 1638. Too amazing really when you think of it!!!! Wow!
I stood on our side deck and watched the last half of the Moon being uncovered from the shadow of the earth. And I nearly froze to death – it was Minus 10 C….! Now add to that I was still in my pyjamas… brrr
There will be other Lunar Eclipses… but never again in my lifetime on the Winter Solstice in Canada… and on my side of the earth – which I know I will not be there 400+ years from now.
As I started musing about this…my house was in a forest 372 years ago and Peterborough was but a gleam in some settler’s eye. The one that happened before that was way before the White Man ever knew that North America ever existed…and before the Aboriginal Folk knew they would get enough new neighbours to rename their country.
Mind you, if I am not mistaken, nothing happened in the other half of our globe.
And when I go back to 1638 and perhaps somewhere in the 1200s – no Aboriginal Man in his right mind would get out of his sleeping quarters to stand in his Pyjamas at Minus 10 C… Only a white man would do something that nuts!
Too crazy for words.
What it does show me is that we are Media Swamped.. encompassed… swallowed up… gobbled up… and don’t even understand the full affects yet. We are pressured internally to wonder… to fear… to question… to run like silly rabbits that are frightened to death for what might happen… because the reporter told us so.
My mom shuffled into my office last evening and asked if I had heard that there was going to be a Lunar Eclipse? I assured her I had… about a million times already. She was a wee bit questioning if she was about to miss something.
Mom likes to go with us to see stuff and do stuff. She likes to be in on everything that is going on.
The thought of her being roused at 3:00 AM – 4:00 AM – 5:00 AM and standing in her pyjamas on the side deck… was kind of funny. She is one month and seven days away from turning 90 years old. But she still doesn’t want to miss it.
The young, enthusiastic weather man that the local TV Station is her favourite to listen to. I know she doesn’t understand half of his Meteorological description of everything… but he is entertaining for this old girl!
I assured mom as she left my office that there probably would be clouds above us and it would happen as we slept.
There were no clouds and it was happening as she was sleeping. I didn’t get her up. Today the weather man will show some his photos I am sure…
Now the media tried to stir things up again about stuff happening in Ottawa, our National Capital City… where our Government Elected warriors are preparing to exit the city… threats of a possible election being called in early new year… Hummph!
Nope.. we don’t want it… yet maybe it would be good to do this in January at Minus 25 C – it would sure prove and show which Politicians meant business and would knock on my cold door… hmmm!
The Lunar Eclipse has come and gone. Not much has changed in my world so far – except maybe I am one night closer to my last sleep on earth… and one day closer to having to get some Christmas Presents for my wife!
Yikes I gotta run with that thought. WalMart is open 24 hours now… I can get there before… oh boy.. gotta get that last thing done!

Christmas Cookie Rules for 2010
So how many turkey dinners have you participated in so far?
By now most Canadians have had about three Christmas Functions that that they have attended. At least one will have been with turkey being served. And the others will have had lots of sweet Christmas delights.
It is the one time of the year that we will take in a little extra… and enjoy a few more bites that we should. It all just tastes so good!
Then there is the guilt factor that accompanies all that extra stuff that you eat. It is a downer for sure to know that after savouring that one delicious morsel, you will have to hold back on so much extra to compensate for what you have done.
I have found the perfect answer to the extras that we eat. It is confirmed to be true because I found it on the Internet. It is the best thing yet to help me deal with my deep feelings and terrible guilt.
Are you ready for my annual presentation of why you should and can eat lots of Christmas Cookies?
Here goes…
Christmas Cookie Rules...
1. If you eat a Christmas cookie fresh out of the oven, it has no calories because everyone knows that the first cookie is the test and thus calorie free..
2. If you drink a diet soda after eating your second cookie, it also has no calories because the diet soda cancels out the cookie calories.
3. If a friend comes over while you're making your Christmas cookies and needs to sample, you must sample with your friend. Because your friend's first cookie is calorie free, (rule #1) yours is also. It would be rude to let your friend sample alone and, being the friend that you are, that makes your cookie calorie free.
4. Any cookie calories consumed while walking around will fall to your feet and eventually fall off as you move. This is due to gravity and the density of the caloric mass.
5. Any calories consumed during the frosting of the Christmas cookies will be used up because it takes many calories to lick excess frosting from a knife without cutting your tongue.
6. Cookies colored red or green have very few calories. Red ones have three and green ones have five - one calorie for each letter. Make more red ones!
7. Cookies eaten while watching "Miracle on 34th Street" have no calories because they are part of the entertainment package and not part of one's personal fuel.
8. As always, cookie pieces contain no calories because the process of breaking causes calorie leakage.
9. Any cookies consumed from someone else's plate have no calories since the calories rightfully belong to the other person and will cling to their plate.
We all know how calories like to CLING!
10. Any cookies consumed while feeling stressed have no calories because cookies used for medicinal purposes NEVER have calories. It's a rule!

Today’s Blog Post
Christmas Crazy
We did it! We are insane! It is officially confirmed – BOTH MY WIFE AND I HAVE MAJOR MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS!
How can that be you ask? How do you know?
Well yesterday we spent part of the day shopping on the Busiest Saturday in our 365 days of 2010. That was yesterday. Christmas shopping was in full swing and there is only 7 days left to buy what needs to be bought.
Now I should describe a scene to help you see what is happening near us.
We live at the base or bottom area of some hills that surround Peterborough on both sides. Most of Peterborough is built down low – near the river. It grew the way it is up and down a river… and now up the hillsides. In fact if you could have been here thousands or years ago, you would have seen our property sitting right on a river bank.
We were coming back into the city at about 6 PM and it was dark. We were travelling east on Lansdowne Street at about the junction of Clonsilla and Lansdowne… and there you could see a majority of Peterborough spread out below.
On the left and right you could see houses and business with their Christmas Lights on… but the most Christmas was on the streets ahead of us. From this vantage point you can see all the way to the Memorial Centre at Lock Street… which may be about 5 Kms from us.
There on the street was Peterborough’s own fancy decorations. On the left was a solid string of cars, two lanes of them coming our way with their headlights on. On the right side of the street were two lanes of taillights for the entire distance… and then all along the way you can see the various traffic lights changing… Green, Yellow and Red.
Spectacular to say the least… until you descend the hill and become a taillights or headlights display… with the crowd that was still buzzing for space at the large Mall – Lansdowne Place… or the crowded new Chinese Restaurant – or the other places that were packed out.
We blended right in. Stopping into Value Village and then Home Outfitters and then … and … and … ! But that was after a full afternoon at the huge Antique Barn that needed checking out just before the end of the year.
Now for my friend Winston that suffers from an inner ear problem… this would be a nightmare… so I write it for him “to see” from a Distance.
My thoughts included questions… “Why do people feel so pressured to buy so much… to spend this time rushing and hurrying… to then fall flat within hours of the wrapping paper flying off? Why do we wrap something that you want to give someone? Who made that rule anyway?
I am dangerously close to uttering “Humbug!” and walking back home to retreat for at least one week until it is over. BLAH – I am completely NUTS!
But then…maybe… just maybe I will get something new too… talk about conflict.

An Older Missionary writing to a Younger Missionary
Meet Rod Corcoran. A young man that was born and raised in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. After graduating from College he came to serve as an assistant pastor in Regina, Saskatchewan with me. After that task was finished Rod decided on taking up a Missionary Career… which then took him to Estonia. I think that was about 10 years ago now.
In Estonia he met Kaja. They are married now with two kids… and another on the way.
He has been doing things in the traditional way serving the church in ways that were needed. He was also helping another good group do their work in Estonia and across parts of Europe.
In January 2011 things are changing for them in a fairly big way with a launch of new ministry.
His email to me sparked the following email to him.
I would ask that you consider supporting Rod and Kaja – financially and in prayer they needed it.

The Following is taking from Rod’s news letter… quote…
e.g. (Business as Mission)
2011 will see the launch of a new missional expression to Nitra, Slovakia and Tallinn, Estonia and other parts of Europe called The Exile Group or e.g.. E.G. exists to see the human spirit set free at work. We will do this through helping people organize themselves for innovation through facilitation, training and design. E.G. is a joint venture with Sheldon Armitage (PAOC Global Worker in Slovakia and together we will focus on positively influencing the private and public sectors in our cities and around Europe with Kingdom values and services. This will also serve as a bridge to the local church and create new expressions of evangelism. This is a new paradigm of missional work but it builds upon our years of experience working with NLI and the PAOC. As well it is one of our regions identified strategies for reaching Europe. E.G. will also partner with Global Workers in the Eurasia region and work with other nonprofit organizations and missionary endeavors in Europe. We look forward to sharing our success stories with you.

Email from Murray to Rod…
Thank you Rod and Kaja for the update. What a joy to read of your new plans and the new adjustments in the strategies of your Ministries. Praise the Lord it is further confirmation that the Lord sees the way ahead and you have been willing to do what is necessary.
As a fellow missionary that thinks outside the box, I know some of the issues that will or perhaps have taken place for you. It may be a stretch for some of the traditional thinking of how a Missionary should do his work.
You have been well situated and trained to take the next step. And the blessing to me is that you are doing it now.
It is the new "Macedonian Call" - just like Luke describes it and they lived it with Paul. But then most that Paul did was that kind of New Missional thinking - reaching the boundaries and they taking one my step past that boundary.
I have quoted a saying that I heard many years ago - over and over again... "Faith is walking to the edge of the darkness and then taking one more step."
The suggestion in that quote... is that as you walk in the light, the known that you have in your life it is fairly easy, routine, and you can cope in that stage forever. Then one day God shows you clearly the direction that you have been walking on has been good... but as you look up and see the great wall of darkness... you actually see it. You have been walking by it for along time, thought about it, wondered about it, and even when you have tried dozens of directions that would be so good... the road was blocked and you needed to do something... but the darkness was not something that was number one on the list. Then you SEE the darkness... a great wall that swirls with the unknown... what if.... no way.... impossible... Bog keeps letting you see it... you cannot get away from it... you dream of it... it distracts you... and then you see and hear.. God is calling you to take that one Big Step into the new direction... into the wall and away from the light that you know.
The amazing part is that every single step is lit in a new way by the Son of all the Light. We remember that he is never leaving us nor forsaking us... he is there all the way... and BANG - BOOM - Kerpowieee! We break through and what was unknown is now the Opportunity of a Life Time... that would not have happened unless you took that one Big Step... and wouldn't have happened even a year ago.
The Lord of the Light has been in the Office Pace, the Factory, the new places that you never even thought about. Your greatest problem now will be keeping up with Opportunity. Hang on Bro! HANG ON!
In Hong Kong as the New Missionary in 1980 I was to do what the Older Missionaries told me to do. I was to Learn the Language - so I did that. Then I was to take over this Ministry and then the other Ministry... and another Ministry as well... that the other Missionaries didn't want or that maybe should have died(the Ministry that is).
Within one month I was buried in Old Missions Stuff - Old Ways to do things that really didn't fit into the feeling that I had inside.
I was an artist and craftsman - making stuff with my hands and able to show others what to do. Not doing some of that was so frustrating.
I had been a Lace Maker back in Canada. I had done Quilting. I was an artist that drew portraits. I was a wood carver. There wasn't much that I had not done. Yet in Hong Kong I had shelved that stuff... put it away... and now I was a Missionary... and Missionaries do Missionary Stuff.
Thinking back on it now I find it very funny. I came off the Airplane after that 22 hour journey and met with the Missionaries. On the airplane I had been making Lace - Tatting pieces of Lace...little snow flakes. I gave the Missionary a small Tatted Snow Flake. They smiled and took it. But had no clue as to what it was. Then they started informing me as to what my Missionary duties would be. I didn't complain - I just did what I was told to do.
It was within a year that I started Teaching Tatting as an outreach tool. I had to fit into what the other tasks were... but it started to take over more and more of my time. A church that was very different in their approach contacted me and asked if I had any ideas of ways that they could reach out to people in their community. I had preached in their church about reaching out. I had given stories about ways that we had been reaching out back in Canada and how people we never had any contact with started coming through the doors for help.
It was in Kun Tong that we started out "Very Interesting Classes"(translation from the Chinese) - teaching first Tatting and then Puppetry and making Puppets (the old Sesame Street Puppets) ... and the new folk started to come... They were factory workers that had been trapped in the Factory that they worked in. They were forced to do this because their parents needed money to put one of their Brothers into a different/better school.
The Creative Classes of all sorts gave the Young Factory Workers new hope. It helped with their Mental Health in huge ways... and as that improved they were seen as better workers and they then were promoted. All of this happened as the church opened the doors to this very different Creative stuff. Then as the new folk came for a the classes the church members sitting in the class with them...built a relationship and then earned the right to share Jesus with them. God had drawn each person coming... and then they in turn brought many others to the Classes and the church grew like crazy. It became a model for what others wanted to do... and THEN I BECAME SO CRAZY BUSY that I had less and less time to do it the Old Missionary way.
The Old Missionaries complained and didn't like what we were doing. Some were jealous. Other churches talked about us in negative ways as well...and stated this is not what God called us to do.... Rev. Lincoln is not doing God's Work... we don't want to have anything to do with this! Some Missionaries did the same thing... they were still back walking in the lit areas that they knew well - the lit areas had been lit in the very same way for 450 years of Mission Work in China... but had not changed at all... and really refused to change.
Thailand heard what I was doing in Hong Kong. A progressive Missionary that was also a little off the wall asked if I would come and help their church do something the same. They were working at the edge of huge slum area. People had come to work in Bangkok from way up country... there were no jobs and they ended up in the slums... the Klong Toi - a city built over the ocean's edge with stilted houses... There was no escape.
This Missionary was able to get some CIDA Money from Canada... and with it we launched the Classes.
In one class I taught Quilting... something I knew since my boyhood days - had perfected in the last few years and then adapted to the Hong Kong scene where few people had personal sewing machines...and we did it all by hand to produce amazing things. Some sewing was necessary and our students did it at work on the factor machines if they could.
The Thia Missionaries made contact with the folks that were interested... these folks did the class with us... then the Missionaries loaned the new students the money from the CIDA Fund... to rent a shop... buy a sewing machine and set up a business. As the new entrepreneur started making money they paid the money back to CIDA Fund... then it was loaned out to another person - revolving out over and over again producing a number of new successful businesses... and setting people free from the slums.
The funny thing that happened was the market that was developed from one Quilting Class that I taught... they sold their hand made Quilted products to Canadian and American Tourists who did quilting back home ... and couldn't believe that the Thai people knew how to do the same kind of Quilting that they did back home in North America.... and the quality that the Thai people put out was just amazing... everyone wanted it!
That was only one story from somewhere inside the Dark Wall...
I came home to Canada... and did the same thing over and over here. In Regina you may remember my carving in my garage with Tim Caswell.... that started a Thursday night happening that eventually turned into the First Church of the Garage with Communion every Thursday night - coffee and chocolate ship cookies. You will also remember that when I left there.. I sold the house and garage... Tim and Debbie decided that it should stop and then built their new garage. The last time I was back home... i dropped by.... and the Guys (new ones) still carve with Tim on Thursday nights....!!!!
That was 12 years ago now.
Rod this is an essay now... sorry for the length.
I needed to share that today after reading about what you are launching. I am so excited for you... and proud too.
Each time I see an email from you... I am reminded of that one link we have... the day that we created the email for you... "explosif" - named because of bike you were riding... but in a prophetic way - DESCRIPTIVE of YOUR MINISTRY. I remember hearing you tell me the word and my thinking - this really describes this guy!!!!
That's the way this Old Man remembers it all anyway...
BTW - I just started another new ministry... there was this Big Black Dark Wall... and it scared me skinny... I talked with some others about the problems at hand... we are retiring... and for some it is a nightmare... these fellow ministers are in trouble... the PAOC is busy doing Missions and Ministry the way they have to... and these folks are in need of help...
So with God's nudging... and lots of conversations with some early retired and soon to be retired ministers... we have launched something titled the "Moses Factor"... it has two tools developing now...
http://mosesfactor.blogspot.com/
http://mosesfactor.proboards.com/
There are three members so far... and you are welcome to join in... young but valuable... and you need to hear what the others are saying about the future. I know - I know... I have preached that sermon to you already!
Praying for you!!!
Murray

There are three members so far... and you are welcome to join in... young but valuable... and you need to hear what the others are saying about the future. I know - I know... I have preached that sermon to you already!
Praying for you!!!

Today’s Blog Post
Hope for Retired and Soon-to-be Retired Ministers
For two years now I have been retiring. No kidding. It has been two years of sifting through all that needs to be done and then trying to do it. In some ways I have been successful… well almost successful… and in other ways I have failed terribly. But no one really knows about the failure – only me and maybe my wife.
I can’t talk about my failure yet. It hurts too much. It is almost like a death in our family… and I am dealing with the emotions afterward. My friends all moved on with their lives and I am left with the feelings after every one is gone.
But mixed with these emotions of dark stuff… there has been the great stuff… the new mountain top stuff… the seeing into a future stuff… WOW!
To say that I have been confused at times as I deal with these two issues is putting it mildly.
Now some of my dear friends will have already started the process of analysis on me. They knew that I had some problems and now this confession confirms their suspicion of all these years! Oh Boy!
After what seems as a long time of dealing with the issues personally I was thunder struck when sitting with another minister and his wife at a coffee shop. Carefully he began to open up and tell us what they faced just around the corner… retirement was coming and the future looked very bleak. Their financial support that they were about to receive is not enough to live on. They may have to work on and on… with no end ever. After years of “serving God and the Church” there will be little pension to look forward to.
As we listened to this man share and watched as his wife sat thinking deeply what it would mean for them… I felt a deep sadness.
I thought back to the darker moments in these last two years when I thought of my own financial worries. The income each month had been greatly reduced and now we faced the realities that were very scary.
As I listened to my friend speak… I couldn’t help but feel a deep pain with him. How could this happen to someone that had been so faithful in serving churches wherever he had been? What could he do now? What will he do in the near future?
I couldn’t help notice the depth of exasperation that he felt as he told his story.
“What is worse Murray… no one seems to care. I am all on my own on this one. You can’t tell anyone this story. No one wants to hear a bad story… we all want it to be positive all the time. My story isn’t very positive right now…”
I listened closely and thought deeply. I didn’t have any words to share then. I could glibly tell him that I would be praying for him… but even that didn’t make sense to either of us.
Other than praying that he would buy/win a lottery ticket… right now not much is going to happen for him.
As I sat and thought about this situation and then reflected on my own… I started hearing of other ministers that had traveled this similar path. The stories started to come my way – over and over again. Some were successful, others were not so good. Most didn’t know here to turn for help.
I prayed about all that was happening around me. Glib reaction – I know… but after all these years it is about all I know how to do.
It was during these times of listening… and thinking… and carving… and tatting… and doing all the stuff that has surrounded me in the last months… an idea started to form. It grew and grew… it started to take on new life. It developed through the “What if…” stages to the “Why not…?” stage. Then it came to the “We have to do something now…” stage. Then finally it hatched as “I will do something NOW!” and the idea became a reality.
This idea was conceived over these past two years for myself… and yesterday it gave birth to a possibility that will help others and myself.
As I have been thinking through the stages of what has happened… I have thought that this was a good idea… but that it was my own idea.
As I look back now I can see a huge hand of help in my life… and guess what when I looked up… that Hand is very BIG. All along God has been guiding what has happened. He has guided even the meetings with certain people that became turning points for the idea.
This BIG Hand has brought some old guys together to start talking about the issues at hand. These old guys are ministers like myself and there is a common thread between us. We are either retired or about to retire. We face similar situations with the emotional and sometimes physical bumps in the road. And as we began speaking with each other about what we feel and know and are facing… we discovered the relief that we needed.
As one of the men pointed out, “These next few years our churches are going to see a huge number of men retire with the Baby Boomers reaching this age. And these Baby Boomer Ministers are not really ready for what they will face. Many have been working at places where the income has been low for a long time. They are going to have huge problems… and there is no place to turn for help…”
We both thought of that for a long time.
There is no place to ask for help. There are few people that will listen. Note – to self - you cannot have a note placed in the church bulleting that states, “Your former minister is in terrible shape and needs prayer. He has nothing left now… and death is looking like the only option… please pray for him.”
Pride keeps most of these men from saying anything at all. God knows and He will take care of it.
Personally if I am asked on Sunday morning in the local church(which ever one I attend…) “How are you Pastor Murray…? How are you doing?” I cannot tell the truth. They couldn’t handle the truth. So when they ask the questions… I smile and say, “Great…” then walk away in a hurry. Most don’t want to know and I can’t tell them.
So what was birthed yesterday?
It is the first stages of a new support network that will help pastors that have retired or are about to retire.
Through the use of the Internet, Telephone and Personal meetings a group of Ministers are being mustered into a new group to support one another. It is a safe place to come for help. Almost everyone that is coming has struggled in some way or other. Most have not had anyone to speak to.
Yes it has a name as well. It is the “Moses Factor”. Moses Factor? Why?
An excerpt from one of the short articles that explain the group to Pastors and Leaders simply says it all… quote…
“Moses was a great leader of his people. In the Scripture we watched him through his Calling, Leading, Mentoring, Retiring, and dare we say - Dieing.
In your ministry to date, you have likely experienced the first three eras of Moses life. Now you are about to enter or perhaps have already entered the fourth – Retiring.
The “Moses Factor” discussion is a new group that was born from conversations that are ongoing between concerned pastors that have either retired or about to. They have experienced some of the highs and lows of this era of their ministry.”
End Quote
The Moses Factor involves a New Blog and a ProBoard Discussion Group. Both of these will support the Retiree and the Soon-to-be Retiree. Following that evidence already is showing that small groups of Retired Pastors are being drawn together in certain areas of Canada.
It is Cross Denominational – not just my kind. The evidence shows that some church organizations and regions have been supplying support for these men. Other areas for one reason or another do not and cannot.
The Dream is that we will support each other.
If you area Retired Pastor or Soon-to-be Retired Pastor you may like to follow along to these addresses. They are both new, only one day old… and there are not a lot of posts as of December 16… but in days to come we hope that you will see growth.

Today’s Blog Post
The Facts that Warm You
Just back from putting the garbage out. WOW – is it ever cold in our city! I need something to warm my world up… even if it is just inside my mind.
I need Facts… lots and lots of facts… and when I went looking did I ever find them.(thanks to fellow Blogger – Taryn)
Did you know about Cold Nosed Rabitts…?
“The Himalayan rabbit has white body fur and it's nose, tail, feet and ears have black fur. Yet Himalayan rabbits have a genotype for black fur all over their body! Genotype is the genetic composition of an organism, what is encoded in their genes. Phenotype is the visible or physical result of a genotype. So a rabbit with a genotype for black fur, should have a phenotype of black fur, but instead, the Himalayan rabbit has a phenotype of white fur with black accents - why?
The Himalayan rabbit is an example of the environment influencing gene expression. Its genotype says that all the fur should be black, but the enzyme that produces black pigment only functions at temperatures below 93°F. At normal climates, extremities of a Himalayan rabbit, such as the nose, ears, tail, and feet, are cool enough for the black pigment to produce black fur. The rest of the rabbit's body is warmer than 93°F and thus has pale fur instead!
Siamese cats are the same. Their fur color is influenced by the surrounding environment.”
Did you know about Origen of Alexander….?
Origen was a Christian scholar and theologian who was the head of Alexandria's Catechetical School during the second century AD.
Today, Origen is considered one of the father's of the Christian church, though in his time he was labeled a heretic for his controversial beliefs. Origen believed in the eternal pre-existance of the human soul and the ultimate salvation of all beings - even Satan himself would be redeemed at the end of the world.
Rumor has it that at age twenty Origen had himself surgically castrated so that he could tutor women without suspicion. Of course, there is dispute as to whether or not this is true as he never wrote about it, but in his time castration was considered an acceptable (though drastic) action against sexuality and "the sins of the flesh." It is likely that Patriarch Demetrius of Alexandria maliciously started the rumor. Originally was one of Origen’s supporters, Demetrius eventually became enemies with Origen and had him banished from Alexandria.
Did you know about the Pilots that tried to shoot Venus…?
“During World War II, a squadron of B-29 pilots mistook the planet Venus for a Japanese plane and tried to shoot it from the sky.”
Did you know…?
“Outer space does some crazy things to your inner ears. The confusing information reaching the inner ears causes nearly every astronaut to experience space sickness. Symptoms include but are not limited to: nausea, headaches, and trouble locating your own limbs. Pregnant rats that were sent into space gave birth to tipsy topsy baby rats whose inner ears were still developing while in outer space.
Another symptom of weightlessness: fluids move upward causing nasal congestion and a puffy face; bones lose calcium, forming kidney stones; and muscles atrophy, slowing the bowels and shrinking the heart.
Zero gravity does make you taller though. The decreased pressure on the spine causes most space travelers to grow about two inches.
If you are ever exposed to the vacuum of space without a suit on, don’t hold your breath: Sudden decompression would cause your lungs to rupture. In addition, water on the tongue, in the nose, and in the eyes would boil away. This actually happened in 1965, when a space suit failed during a NASA experiment and the tester was exposed to a near vacuum for 15 seconds.
Contrary to Hollywood, though, you wouldn’t explode. Lack of oxygen in the blood is what would kill you, but it would take about two minutes.
More explosion paranoia: Virgin Galactic, Richard Branson’s space-tourism company, reportedly considered barring women with breast implants due to fears that they might blow up.
If astronauts tried to sprinkle salt and pepper on their food it would float away, and likely cause some serious issues. Instead astronauts add salt and pepper to their meals in liquid form.
Returning astronauts report extreme difficulty moving their arms and legs right after touchdown, one reason why they call landing “the second birth.” Long-duration cosmonauts report that the hardest thing to readjust to about life on Earth is that when you let go of objects, they fall.
So after all of this? A total of eighteen people have died on space missions, but never in space—always on the way up or the way down.”
Now you are warmed up and so am I… gotta go shovel soon.

Today’s Blog Post
Slowing Down in a Hurry Up World
Have you noticed how fast time has gone by this past 12 months? I have – it was just yesterday I was looking for wrapping paper. I am sure that it was!
It was just yesterday that I was looking for the special gift that we needed for that special one. It was just yesterday… I am sure of it.
When I was only 12 it seemed like an eternity before the 25th of December arrived. When we went to bed on the 24th – we were sure that the 25th was way too long away. I was sure that I couldn’t wait for whatever was about to happen.
Now in the 6th decade of waiting… waiting is way to easy… in fact a slow down, a strong breaking method, a whoa – hold on boy – would be very good right now. Some way to slow each day would be fantastic!
When I pick up my Wood Carving, my Pyrography or my Tatting – times seems to stand absolutely still. The concentration on the small movements and the many small decisions that are made are the key to the slowing down.
My friend plays golf and finds it slows him down as well. He joked about it the other day. Now the golf courses he plays on insist that he use a cart so he can keep up to the pace that the other golfers are playing at. His whole idea of taking up golfing was to be able to slow down and enjoy the outdoors, enjoy the walk and enjoy the talking with his friends… but now they want him to speed it up… get going.
He wondered about wood carving and if you had to be in a hurry if you carved.
Nope – not at all.
I just finished removing the ice chunks piled in front of our driveway. I chopped a little… then scooped up the chunks. Just a little at a time – slowly… then in between I would lean on my shovel. There is no hurry here anymore.
This post to my Blog is normally up by about 7 AM… today it will be close to 1 PM.
You know… it is now time for a nap. Oh Boy…
