Today’s Blog Post

Jump Steven JUMP!
Steven Slater’s story has been rolling around in my mind this past week after I heard what happened. Steven has become a kind of folk hero in his world… and maybe the world of many that would just like to tell everyone around them to. “Take this job and shove it!”

In the Yahoo News (by Holly Bailey) account I read… quote…
“It all happened as the plane pulled into the gate at JFK after what had been a routine flight from Pittsburgh. But shortly after landing, a passenger stood up as the plane was taxiing to the gate and began removing his bags from the overhead bin. According to the Wall Street Journal's Sean Gardiner, the flight attendant, identified as Steven Slater, asked the passenger to return to his seat.

A "heated" exchange ensued, which culminated in Slater walking to the rear of the plane, where he grabbed the intercom. "To the passenger who called me a motherf***er, f*** you!" Slater yelled, passengers tell the New York Daily News. "I've been in the business 28 years. I've had it. That's it." He activated the emergency chute and slid away.

Slater then walked along the jetway into the terminal, where he took a shuttle to the employee parking lot. Observers watched as he ripped off his JetBlue tie and threw it to the ground. Slater got into his vehicle and drove to his home in Queens. According to the New York Times' Ray Rivera, he was arrested shortly afterward and faces charges of criminal mischief and trespassing.”
End quote

Steven made his mark no doubt. And there are many that would like to do the same in their particular jobs.

As a Minister for 35 years there were a few times that my fellow ministers and I discussed the possibilities of going on strike as well… or walking out on the congregation. Being the filled with too much of Swiss Chalet or Kentucky Fried Chicken – we never did do anything about it.

When people in church were acting out and hating each other – or the minister(which would be me at times…) we all considered walking away from the nightmares. I mean, in church, they are supposed to be loving each other… they put on a show of love and newness… but even the suit they wore wouldn’t fool anyone. At times they hate each other – royally! But that is for another blog or the book that is being written. Ahem.

When the acting out took place I threatened to make picket signs and parade in front of the church building telling people that I would not preach again until they got their act together. If they wanted me to be a Christian Minister, then they better start acting like Christians, not Terrorists from another Faith Group!

I never had the guts to do a “Steven Slater” thing, instead it was easier to let them keep acting out the way they did to each other. But I do wish that I could have stomped to the back of the Aircraft and pulled the door open and jumped out… walked to the bus and went home.

The really stupid passenger that would not cooperate for their own safety, could just get their luggage and leave. The really silly “christian” could simply live stupidly and leave as well.

Steven has my respect.

But another man also has that respect as well. His story I have told many times over but is worthy of note again when Steven Slater did his thing.

This “Dude” has no name. He was a worker that did a job for the Town of Melville, Saskatchewan. A kind of Town Employee that did the dirty work and jobs assigned to him in that small Saskatchewan town.

Melville has a fairly large population of German folk that can be at times – stubborn, bull headed, unmoving and maybe even a little hard to work for.

“Dude” had a problem one day as he worked for the Town and the Management so he took steps to let them know what he thought of them. Something like Steven Slater did.

Now I pause for a moment here and must tell a little background that will help you fully appreciate the full story.

Germans are proud. They love to tell you what they do best and what they have as the best.

One family that my wife and I knew were just that way. German and Proud. They were kind of related at one stage in my life and because of that we would stop by to visit them when we lived in the next town – Yorkton, Saskatchewan.

While we were in the proud German home, they told us of all the canning and preserving that “the wife” had done. They told us how good the water was and then great benefits of living in Melville. Very Proud of it all. We had coffee and tea with them often.

Now back to the “Dude” that had worked for Melville. He had been fired. He didn’t like or couldn’t take the abuse any longer from the people of Melville… or the Boss… or the Mayor… of maybe just everybody. And he told them so. So… they fired him!

The “Dude” did something that was maybe the ultimate “in your face” kind of thing to do to people that bug you.

“Dude” climbed the Town of Melville’s main water tower, undid the hatch and jumped into the water. The lid slammed shut and he was left inside. It was kind of a nasty way to commit suicide but he managed to do it very well.

No one knew he had done this until much later. Much later was long enough for the folk of Melville to find only his bones. He had dissolved into in their pure clean water supply and they had drank all of him for a few years.

Sorry that was a wee bit gross… My former, proud, German friends threw out all her canning and preserving over the former years.

Looking at the Steven Slater action and stories of last week, then thinking of the Melville “Dude” in the water tower… I think of all the folk that endure the abuse of ignorant people around them.
YES – it is ABUSE – nothing short of stupid abuse that causes people to go off the deep end and jump into Water Towers, or out of the airplane’s emergency door… or even to consider picketing a silly bunch of so called “christians”!

I look on now and watch it happen in my world. I hear of marital abuse. I hear of physical abuse. I hear of child abuse. I hear of abuse around me all the time. Makes me sick but I can do nothing about it. BUT I do not have to agree with it… and I am out of here (or there).

You go Steven Slater! You have done something that the rest of us only dream of doing. Hey “Dude” in the water tower… you are remembered for along time!

Jump Steven JUMP! Jump for me and the many others that wished they could have – but didn’t.

Oops! Opportunity
Two years ago as I entered my first classes for the building of my new business we received specific suggestions as to answering the Telephone. We were told, start immediately to answer with your business name. In my case, that would be, “Good afternoon, Misty Hollow Carving”.

The second most important thing was to not let children or older people in the household answer the phone. The children tend to be too honest by saying things like, “Daddy can’t come to the phone right now, he is fighting with mommy – or maybe in the bathroom… oh I don’t know…”

Or if the older person answers, as in my case with my mom, she will say, “I can’t hear you because I don’t have my hearing aids in and my daughter-in-law has already gone out. Call back later..!” Click, she hangs up… the call is over.

It took a while to get mom to look at the number on the phone, if it was someone she knew, she then answered it, otherwise she let it go to the answering service.”

Two days ago it was an Ooops on my part, big time. Can’t lay blame on the “old people” or the kids in our household. It was solely my fault. I did it and nearly lost it. DUMB – real DUMB!

The telephone rang and I picked it up saying “Hello”, rather chirping it out. I was kind of expecting a call from a friend… and thought this might be him.

The voice asked, “Is this Misty Hollow? And do you have any speciality wood?”

I chirped back in my ‘funny voice’ – “You betcha on both counts!”

There was a pause and the voice asked again, “Are you the wood carver?”

By this time the fun in his voice was matching mine… “Do you have any exotic wood?”

I paused for a minute and asked how exotic he wanted it… thinking this definitely was one of my crazy friends calling to bug me…

I was going to say something even funnier that the “friend” I was waiting to hear from would have roared in laughter to… but for some reason instead I said, “What kind are you looking for and what is it going to be used for?” Let’s string it out a little more…

He then said, “I have two century old ‘Hawk’ – a ‘Tomahawk’ that I am trying to make a new handle for… and I would like to get some special wood for it…. Would you be able to help me? It is for a special friend of mine that is trying to do a very important deal within Canada.”

I asked the man what his name was… and He replied “John..”

Nope it wasn’t my friend that I thought was calling. I scampered to collect my thoughts. Then I asked, “Would you like to drop over and we can talk about it some more. I do have some interesting wood that you might like…?”

Within 30 minutes he was at my Wood Shop.

He owns a very good summer resort. Someone had given him my name and number with a wee bit of info about what I do.

The Tomahawk is a gift that will be given to a multi-millionaire to try and impress her so that she will buy into an idea – a really big idea that will affect many lives in the future. The Tomahawk is potentially worth a lot of money and is a special one from a long time ago… from $4000 to $7000 – yikes!
Oh boy. It arrived today and it is a treasure from long ago. The handle that is on it now is not very good – someone tried to put an old stick in place of what should or might have been there.

I am reconsidering the chirping voice on the phone… yikes… I shudder with the thoughts of what almost happened. Ooops – that was dumb.

It looks now that I may have witnessed another really important door just swing wide open to a market place that I had no idea that it even existed!

But, tell me, how many people have very wealthy people call, about a Tomahawk for a Millionaire… I mean how many Millionaires will need a Tomahawk…??? How could I ever know… ?

I am so thankful to whichever person picked up my Misty Hollow Business card and passed it on to John! Whoa! Opportunity!

Say… I remember that vice nice looking lady last week at the Mall. She stopped and asked questions about carvings… and asked for a card… I’ll bet you that was the card… WOW!

And it all finalized today – Friday the 13th! Wahoo!

PS - If you read this later "John" - you will see that this is your 'Hawk'... and now you will know why I acted a little weird on the Telephone! Sorry!

Today’s Blog Post

Our Amazing Brugmansias
Our driveway is about as far from the section of the Andes between Ecuador and Chile as you can get. Yet each night we are reminded of the area by way of our two magnificent Brugmansia that stand tall in front of our garage. Now at just about 6 feet tall – the tallest and the other just under that height and almost that wide – they have almost taken over.

Now the plants have finally opened their amazing Trumpet Flower.

At night the smell is totally over powering… it fills the entire driveway with only five Trumpets open now. At last count we may have another dozen or so that will come on one plant and perhaps one on the tall plant. Our yard will smell powerfully.

As I sat last evening in the garage carving I noticed something odd. There was not one mosquito in the garage! The smell was there and it appears that the mosquitoes in our area don’t like the smell… or maybe cannot smell me with these things blooming now.

There is a small problem with this “Angel Trumpet” (another name for the Brugmansia…) EVERY Single part of this plant is highly toxic and can kill a person and pets if ingested. That… we didn’t know when we bought it…but have no idea of eating it.

Last year it was small and never got very big in the pot. I did what was suggested at the end of the year in the fall season and simply put them inside the garage and stopped watering them. I did give them a little drink about once a month as the stem was green and producing new leaves in the cool garage.

The minute that we put them out in the warmer weather they took off and did they ever grow!

On the really hot days, whether it is humid of dry, the Brugmansia needs water. It is huge and must need lots of water… so a squirt in the morning does the job…. Then at evening time after a real hot day another watering seems to be appreciated.

At night as the smell comes, especially after dark, the top leaves on every branch suddenly begin to reach up and kind of clump together like praying hands. This seems to open up the while plant to allow more access of the critters that should be coming our way and into the trumpet.

I think the needed critters in the Andes can’t fly that far… so it is to no avail that it makes it self available.

As our fall comes and the weather changes it will be back into the garage again for another winter inside away from the snow and ice. Just the pot and the stem sticking out of the soil will do.

Apparently we have a Brugmansia arborea. The article from Wikipedia is great to know more.

Yes it starts from a clipping too. Let me know – we have enough to cover most Peterborough yards and driveways – forever.

Sore Feet and Fat People at The Mall

Today at the Mall demonstrating Tatting and talking about Lace Making was another eye opener. Actually it is not something I haven’t seen before.. its just that today I can talk about it.

I will start this way.

A 58 year old lady, that has lost her job last November, has struck up a friendship with me. We have talked about four times now. Today – after speaking for about a half hour… she suddenly said, “Wow! Have noticed how many Fat People are in this Mall?”

She rocked me back a little with that statement. What do you say to that factual truth?

Each Wednesday I sit and watch people – hundreds of them walking by me. And yes it is quite notable – there are many Fat People at the Mall. They are not just a little over weight they are Obese in most cases. Most work in the general area of the Mall and come there for their lunch breaks and coffee breaks. Many are my potential customers… and I have spoken to almost all of them – one to one.

They are nice people – happy people – but Fat People.

Now as I watch them I have come to not look directly at them as they would notice me doing that. Tatting away, I look up just a bit and then notice their feet… and the way that they walk. Oh my goodness… that is the part of the Fat People that I actually see first… their poor feet.

This time of year they are usually wearing sandals (both men and women). Their feet are red… swollen and looking very painful. Ankles are screaming as they keep the foot’s connection.

The feet are small in comparison to what is above. Very small, to say the least in comparison to the tremendous weight they are supporting. The feet that were made and designed to support a woman of 5 foot, 5 inches and about 135 pounds. Instead they were holding up around 350 pounds of shifting weight that was now coming down her calf and filling her poor ankles with excess. The two feet are caring three people!

Her feet were terrible and her gate was very difficult.

She was carring a Large Coke from McDonalds and a chocolate bar that was half eaten. It was about 10:15 AM.

Now I know there are people with weight problems that feel that I have attacked them personally. Sorry. I am just telling you what I see. And I see a lot of it in the Mall.

I have thought about starting a weight loss counselling service… and as I sit and Tat… and big person comes by… I can ask them if they would like to lose weight… Hmmm? Do you think it would work?

I noticed that as I stepped on the scale today… the numbers increased slightly in the last year… ever so slightly… but with some more work I can surely knock it down.

I never bought the chocolate bar that was sitting at the edge of the coffee shop counter… I drank water instead… but did it ever look good!

Tonight my feet are sore… Oh boy!

Today’s Blog Post

Stupid Emails – I mean really Stupid Emails!

The text of the email that my friend forwarded to me reads as follows…
Quote…
“This is not sent for discussion. If you agree, forward it... If you don't, delete it.

I don't want to know one way or the other. By me forwarding it, you know how I feel.

Seen at a NASCAR race. Enough said!”
End quote

Now my friend does this to me to get me going I am sure… and this one was too good (too bad) to not catch. I just had to do something with it. Thanks Terry – I told I would.

Along with the statement made by the email came this photo…
Now you will see the hatred that is felt by the owner of the truck. Not sure if the good old boy that owns the truck at the NASCAR race is a down home, church attending, bible thumper… maybe not. But he sure hates Islamic people and Islam.

Can you imagine this Trucker making it into Canada with the Border Guards we have on duty. That would be a site to behold to say the least.

Using the same logic and basic hatred for another person we need to be fair about it all. Here is another Tailgate that was seen not far from the Islam hating one… in my mind at least. I mean fair is fair – isn’t it?
How does that sit with you as a God Fearing, Regular Church Attending, Bible Thumping, Faithful, Down Home Christian?

Kind of stings doesn’t it?

In my two years of retirement I have seen a lot of things and heard a lot of things that make me shake my head. And this tailgate is not one of them.

What really knocks me off kilter is the things that are touted as Christian. They are not Christ like – so they cannot be Christian in my mind.

Each time I have witnessed one of these non Christian things… I go back to the Basic Manual for Christians – the Bible – and I cannot find references to what is suggested.

Emails and emails forwarded are a great snapshot of society. It is almost like an archaeological dig… you can see what was really there – long ago… of just a few minutes ago. I love the ones that come my way… but I know people are careful what they send… because I use them for my fodder to write.

Today that happened with the Tailgate about Islam.

Today my thinking is for every Islamic Person and how much God loves them. That kind of blows most people in the Western World.

Thanks Terry… you got me thinking!

Today’s Blog Post

The Ultimate Family Feud - UFF
Over the years I have watched some strange feuds.

Some happen at the Funeral Chapel as mom(or dad) is being prepared for her final resting place. While the funeral directors are preparing her remains the kids begin to fight over what remains.

The really guilty children that caused her all the stress will demand that they have the Best Casket Possible. Others that have been faithful to the parent want to not spend all the money at one shot. “Mom deserves the best” vs “We deserve the best… and we want that money!”

Oh there are all kinds of fights at funerals. Believe me!!

But the very best one that I have been following is the Classic Family Feud where Shirley Anderson is suing her kids, Brian, Donna, Keith and Ken for monthly support. I believe she wants them to each give her $750 per month – because she is their mother… and an archaic BC Law states that the children must look after an elderly Senior – especially in their family.

The complication from what I understand is that Shirley abandoned her kids when they were young. She ran away and they were raised entirely away from their Mom. In fact I am not sure that they even know their Mom… or rather this lady that makes these demands.

It is in adjournment at this time. No one is sure what could happen if this lady was to win this case – forcing her kids to pay up.

I started to think about this and realized that with two daughters I should be pulling in another $1500 each month. I think this idea has some merit.

Now adding to this thought we have fed their families a lot of meals over these years. There should be a consumption amount added to the $1500 and let’s round it off at $2500 per month.

I could live a lot better on that!

And a second thought is – we should not have stopped at Two Girls… we should have had the 12 that I wanted in the first place! That would have made it much better bringing in a about $9000 per month! I definitely could have lived on that much!

Now my mom is living with us. She shares in our expenses. I don’t think she will think of suing us… at least I hope not!

If you think of this new legal problem and the possible problems for others around us… the landscape of family could well be changing – big time!

How does it affect you? What would you do with this information? Who will you sue? Or who will sue you?

Monday morning musings are plain silly.

Gotta run with some more wood for a friend.

Today’s Blog Post
Tatting and the Spring Pole Lathe - at the Barnum House – Grafton, Ontario

Hey ‘Kathryn Wiltshire’ (Facebook Friend of mine) – good question! Your note asked the question after my posting yesterday, “Tatting what is tatting?”

Tatting is a very old and very fine method of Lace Making. It is made with a Tatting shuttle which is a small apparatus wound with fine cotton. I hold the thread in my left hand and move the shuttle in such a way, as I hold it in my right hand, that it ties a very small knot between my fingers on my left hand.

Now I know that is about as clear as MUD! Poor description for your bright mind…the flowers on the greeting card are Tatted.

Let me try another way.

In the early 1800s there was no TV, no Internet, no complication of the massive attack on the minds of folks that lived along the King’s Highway just east of Cobourg and a little way out of Grafton, Ontario.

The Barnum Family lived in a stately old house they had built for their family. Wikipedia states the following of Barnum House… quote…. “Eliakim Barnum was in his early twenties when he emigrated from the United States in 1807. He chose to settle in Haldimand Township near the village of Grafton (then called Haldimand) on the north shore of Lake Ontario, a few miles east of present-day Cobourg. By 1819, Barnum owned over 900 acres (364 hectares) of land, a thriving milling business, a tavern and a distillery. His business success made him an influential citizen in early Haldimand Township. A loyal Tory, Barnum was a Justice of the Peace, a founder of St. George's Anglican Church in Grafton and Lieutenant-Colonel of the local militia. He also helped start the first school in the township in 1820 – perhaps because he and his wife Hannah had five children. His oldest son, Smith Barnum, would become the first Warden of the United Counties of Northumberland and Durham in 1849.

In 1819, Barnum built a stylish house that stands today as one of Ontario's finest examples of Neo-Classical architecture. The building's composition is formal, with two symmetrical wings flanking a central temple structure. The façade of Barnum House is articulated with pilasters linked by elliptical arches. Its architectural detail is extensive and delicately scaled. Neo-Classical houses were popular in New England in the early 19th century. American experiments with the style were, in turn, inspired by British examples, particularly the work of the leading proponents of Neo-Classical architects Robert and James Adam.”
End quote
When I read more I found that the original house built near this spot was burned down accidentally by British Soldiers that had been billeting there.

Eliakim Barnum and his family lived in a different time. Work and the family business were of the utmost importance. Quiet time for both men and women was a treasure as they say around the parlour table and room. Simple games might have been played but more often than not, the simple activity of hand work mused most.

Tatting was one kind of hand work that people entertained themselves with. In many places the men, as well as the women, did tatting. It was not “un-man-like” to pick up a fine hand craft and take part with your children.

My Great Grandfather, Benjamin Franklin Philips who lived in the later 1800s, was that kind of man. He was a Tatter and taught his three daughters how to Tat as well. He was also wood carver and carved them each a Tatting Shuttle.

At one time, a long time ago, things were slower and more peaceful. For me… the Barnum House represents that kind of stately peace.

Yesterday, as I mentioned in the August 7th posting, I was demonstrating my Tatting along with some of the wood work that I do. In particular I was showing the Spring Pole Lathe that works so smoothly.

In the photos below you will see the Young Adults with me, actually very sharp University Students, totally immersed in the operation of the Spring Pole Lathe. The best part is that we have kept Demo from being a boring talk about the Spring Pole Lathe – instead it is a hands on experience where the participants actually use this wonderful tool.

Not only did the young folk try as you can see in the photos… the older folk were there as well. The man pictured below is “Gordon”, a retired United Church Minister that stayed the entire afternoon with us. Gordon is 91 years old and still is spry enough to spend the day under the giant Maple Tree shade in Barnum House front yard.
Gordon tried the Lathe too.

Demonstrating these old ideas brings people together. Yesterday the Barnum House came to life again… just the way that it must have been in 1820 – shortly after it was opened.

As I stood watching Gordon interact with the about-to-graduate University Students I smiled. Here was a man that holds a few degrees behind his name, one of them being a Masters Degree, speaking to the next generation so kindly and with great interest. There should have been a 72 year spread of difference between them – but with the Lathe – all that generational, societal difference of opinions and all that the 2010, Facebooked, Twitterized, complicated, fast pace life should offer to keep them apart… simply vanished.

In my imagination that is what happened in 1820. There was a lot less separation of generations… and more coming together under a giant shade tree… to share a Saturday or Sunday afternoon.

Kathryn… my words will never explain the total experience of yesterday.

Ooops… got carried away.

My wife, Alida, offered information on the Tatting Table. Her wonderful way with people gives my Demos the charm that is lacking with my saw dust covered personage.
For the presentation I had invited many people personally to attend. These many people ranged from Cobourg through to Brighton. Only one showed up… for which I am so thankful! No problem. I know everyone is busy… very busy… so busy that stopping for awhile is just too complicated for their lives… even for one hour.

Their absence was declarative of their world.

As the Spring Pole Lathe whirred away and the simple little vase appeared at the end of the old chisel, the vehicles roared by… trucks and cars rushing somewhere… ATVs flying down the road… and motorcycles zipping by… all too busy to stop at the old house… too busy to go back.

Later as we pulled out of the Barnum House heading west to Cobourg, an Ambulance rushed up behind us with the latest victim of the Panic and Rushing World. Someone likely had a heart attach as they rushed through their complicated life. Sad.

Finally, one of the visitors of yesterday showed up late. He was a grandpa, like me. Retired for a lot of years now. He statement was comical but poignant and very fitting for the day.

He said, “My wife came home from this show a little whole ago and got after me… she dragged me off the couch and told me to get over here and take a look at what was going on…!”

Both Alida and I spent a delightful time speaking with this gentleman. Another brand new friend… that may come to see us in Peterborough. I am glad his wife got him off the couch!
