Kendra Louise Soles Feb 4, 1977 – Feb 10, 2010 – “WHEN YOU THOUGHT I WASN'T LOOKING”
I have just returned from conducting a funeral/memorial service for a brilliant young lady by the name of Kendra Louise Soles. Kendra just turned 33 years old. Six days later she passed away.
Twelve years ago Kendra’s dad, Ken, and I became friends. The Soles family lives right across the street from us. A few years ago Ken passed away and I help conduct his funeral.
Now today we said goodbye to Kendra.
Kendra is far too young to die… people don’t/shouldn’t die at 33!
Kendra arrived to begin blessing her family on February 4, 1977. She had a condition known as “spinal bifida” and has been in a wheel chair most of her life.
In Peterborough she was our Easter Seal “Tammy” a few years ago – among many other things she did along the way.
Today, Nisbett Funeral Chapel was filled to over flowing for a young lady that blessed so many from her ability in a wheel chair. With Kendra there was no disability.
I gave the guests some home work to do following the memorial service today. This week, each time they think of Kendra, they are to do something good for some one else in memory of their friend.

WHEN YOU THOUGHT I WASN'T LOOKING
A message every adult should read because children
are watching you and doing as you do, not as you say.
When you thought I wasn't looking I saw you hang my
first painting on the refrigerator, and I immediately
wanted to paint another one.
When you thought I wasn't looking I saw you feed a
stray cat, and I learned that it was good to be kind
to animals.
When you thought I wasn't looking I saw you make my
favorite cake for me, and I learned that the little
things can be the special things in life.
When you thought I wasn't looking I heard you say a
prayer, and I knew that there is a God I could always
talk to, and I learned to trust in Him.
When you thought I wasn't looking I saw you make a
meal and take it to a friend who was sick, and I
learned that we all have to help take care of each other.
When you thought I wasn't looking I saw you take care
of our house and everyone in it, and I learned we have
to take care of what we are given.
When you thought I wasn't looking I saw how you
handled your responsibilities, even when you didn't
feel good, and I learned that I would have to be
responsible when I grow up.
When you thought I wasn't looking I saw tears come
from your eyes, and I learned that sometimes things
hurt, but it's all right to cry.
When you thought I wasn't looking I saw that you
cared, and I wanted to be everything that I could be..
When you thought I wasn't looking I learned most of
life's lessons that I need to know to be a good and
productive person when I grow up.
When you thought I wasn't looking I looked at you and
wanted to say, 'Thanks for all the things I saw when
you thought I wasn't looking.'
I AM SENDING THIS TO ALL OF THE PEOPLE I KNOW
WHO DO SO MUCH FOR OTHERS,
BUT THINK THAT NO ONE EVER SEES.
LITTLE EYES SEE A LOT .
Each of us (parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, teacher, friend)
influences the life of a child.

Caught on a Bicycle – Wow!
I feel like a discovered North America! Kind of the way that the early explorers did when they first saw this land. But I have not come to conquer but rather to see all the newness around me.
Today I looked at my house of 925 Western Ave in Peterborough, Onatrio on Google Maps. It was the coolest thing to see our home from different angles…moving up and down our street with ease.(Try the Link below to come to my home!)
It appears that at about 9 AM the Google Maps – Street View vehicle drove by at that time. There is my red trailer out front and the flag is on the house. It is warm and sunny that day.
I then checked out my daughter and son-in-law’s home. Guess what there house was shot on Garbage Day – which is Thursday. And in their case – there is no stuff in their driveway – across the street from them is different!!!!
Am I ever glad that my garage door was closed!
I remember last year traveling on my bicycle towards down town and cutting through a few streets as I was on my short cut run to get there faster. As I rode along I saw a funny little vehicle with a kind of bubble on top… drive by me. It was weird. I happened to hear later that day that the Google Folks were in town doing their video work on our city.
I searched a little the familiar streets that I do my short cuts on…. And BINGO… there is a dude on his bicycle traveling down the similar area that I was on. I am sure that it is ME!
Trying to get closer to actually see me… didn’t happen. I must have scurried down another short cut and away from the camera’s view.
It really is too weird seeing your city this way!
To try it further… I asked Google Maps to go to 1422 Elliott Street, Regina, SK. – the house we lived in when I was a young boy. Zoom… the map appeared to show me the street that I used to live on. I pulled the small yellow man to the end of the street – in front of where the house was… turned to my left… and WOW… IT WAS GONE!
In 2008 it was still there… but now it is gone.
What a strange feeling. It was like getting kicked in the mid section. The last time I was there I took photos of it. In fact the door was open and no one was there with the house being completely empty. There had been a fire and it was a mess. Now it is gone.
To the side of where the house was is the large open field where we used to play. That was still the same. Talk about a rush of feelings.
Address after address that we were familiar with or have lived in came on to the monitor!
Amazing!
I have spent more than enough time today zooming around the world looking at old places that I once travelled to or have lived in.
I offer this simple exercise as a possible entertainment for this cold winter day. Go for it!
I have a ton of feelings to deal with now… imagine the old house is gone…. Gotta run…!!!!

Which Way is Down?

Which Way is Down?
Now I know that some of the readers of this question are going to think that I am right off my rocker now! I just know it.
Down is… well Down! Right?
Now consider this.
If you are on the Moon and look out over the horizon at Earth... Earth is over there… not down. The Moon surface that you are standing on is Down. Right? But when you were traveling to the Moon it was up and then out there. Not Down. Right?
When you climb back on to the shuttle craft to shuttle back to the earth – it is up ahead. You come closer and closer to the earth until becomes a bigger and bigger ball. Now you are close enough that it is almost filling your entire vision – yet it is still a ball. You are able to now see the oceans and land on the surface of the earth. The earth is out there – still.
At what point would you consider it then to be “Down” there?
It was up there – or out there – now it is down there. Why?
At what point did your thoughts turn to the fact that it is now down there… and why did you start thinking that way?
Now I know you have not had enough coffee to be able to process this yet.
Before I offer more thinking on the Earth – try this one.
Some people go “up town”…. Others go “down town”. How can that place in our city be both up and down at the same time? And if I really pick this one apart a little further… why the dickens do they use the word “town” – when it is in a City? Shouldn’t it be “up city” and ‘down city”.
When I first heard “up town” and “down town” – it was in a prairie town that was flat. Which didn’t make any sense in that there was only directions – and no height at all. You could argue that the town was at an elevation of 1,150 feet above sea level. This then made it higher than Toronto and Vancouver by 700 to 1150 feet above these to cities. No one ever said they are going down to either of these cities… or going up to Regina!!!
In both of the cases above – we either go “out” to or “over” to – never Down or Up!
Back to the Earth thing.
There is no actual Down… or Up for that matter… it is positional.
Down and Up are influenced by Gravity for sure. But it is partly physiological, partly psychological and partly logical. And with that in mind only one third is affected by the reality of gravity.
So in fact there is no definite Up or Down.
When I have been viewing the results that the Hubble Space station is collecting it has blown my mind quite simply. There is no up or down – anywhere. There is no over or out or under or beside. There is only infinite – or infinity.
And the infinite and infinity is limited altogether by the ability to see just so far and no more… which does not change the extent of the absolute distance. There is no edge of space. There is no limit to it at all.
I have a GPS Unit that talks to me when I turn it on in the Van. Immediately it tells me that it is searching for the necessary satellites above my head – or some where out there now. Then when I turn a different way the talking GPS Unit says… “Recalculating, Recalculating…”
Maybe I need to do that in my own life too.
Yesterday I met with lots of people that thought they were the centre of the Universe. Everything in relation to them is up, down, over and under… duh! But most important they are the centre of everything. It as quite funny to witness a whole host of people in the same room that all thought they were the centre of the whole Universe.
I need to refocus big time… Oh boy!

Dear Mr. Todd Richardson
I received your email and invitation this morning early. I am replying to the excellent opportunity that your company has extended to people like myself. I believe that I do qualify for the position that you have outlined in your description the task with the EWEA.
(I have included the original email at the end of this letter so you will know which email I am referring to.)
I am making this reply by email first to demonstrate my eagerness to get involved IMMEDIATELY. I will be sending the important personal contact mail via snail mail in that I do not trust placing this kind of information in an electronic form that may go to some one else other than your company.
There are some concerns right off the bat that I need to address here before I go further. But please note because I have concerns it doesn’t mean that I am not interested. I want the JOB!
Concern One -
When I Googled your name and company I found the following. You are a Lawyer that works as Vice President, Strategic Human Resources and Risk Management. But you are part of the Exact Target Company which does considerable work with email. In fact the description offered on the Exact Target Web Site states, “On Demand email marketing and one to one digital communication platform”. It does not list you as part of the EWEA.
Can you explain that for me? I have had a problem trusting Lawyers over my 66 years of living. It has come quite easily this mistrust in that I do volunteer work inside of Prisons – in fact I am going to be in Prison for a few hours today. And every one of the men in prison were represented by a Lawyer before they went there – yet they were still found guilty and the Lawyer walked away with a bundle of cash that he was paid for doing nothing.
Concern Two –
I am NOT A LAWYER and I cannot justify collecting money for doing nothing without that qualification behind my name. I had looked at getting one from the Internet site dealing with Granting Degrees etc. An old friend of mine, that was a car salesman, is now an Ordained Minister after he looked into getting the qualification from that site. He never had to study one book – just paid the money!!! No kidding!
If I sit on my duff and wait for the mailman to bring me the collection checks that will be sent to me I really am acting as a Lawyer – am I not? And without the proper qualifications and necessary degrees – would I not get in trouble?
Concern Three –
If you get the people that are owing your company money to send there money to me directly as your collection agent…. Will they trust me? I can see that I need some forms and letters with letter head printed on it. I will need these for the Bank that I am setting up the account with. The pretty teller told me that at my Bank.
I would also like to have some Business Cards printed with my new Title on it… and if I can afford the Internet degree I will include that. This will impress my Coffee Clan that I meet with each morning. These guys are sharp. I don’t want them to be saying that this is just a scam. With a proper and beautiful Business Card they will know that this is real.
Concern Four –
The EWEA is a company that is dealing with renewable energy. It deals with Wind and Water and Waves and a whole lot of interesting things all over Europe. I have only been to London for about 6 hours one day on my way to Africa. They made me stay in the airport for that time. I heard some people speaking English with a British accent. One of them was a very angry security guard that yelled at me when I took a photo of the funny telephone booth near the Immigration entrance.
I am qualified as some one that knows something about Wind and Water and Waves. I have been a minister in a church for 35 years and have preached some Long Sermons. Many people thought that I was full of hot air – at least that is what they told me. I have also Baptized People in Water that often makes Waves. And the things I said in those sermons really caused Waves in the community. My friends told me that many other folk used to talk about me after church in ways that were not very nice – definitely I caused waves!
Will all that I did as a Minister in church be enough Hot Air to fill the requirements that EWEA might have?
Needless to say for 35 years I kept the dear folk in a church building for 52 times a year and one hour and a half at a time. All the time they were there – they were not polluting. Some of the older ones occasionally passed gas – but that was pretty normal in an audience of that kind.
Finally Todd… I am more than excited and will work very well within your company organization. I have been a little short on cash since leaving the full time work at the church. This retirement mode and unemployed mode doesn’t exactly match my style of living as a minister and the impression that I used to leave on everyone.
Back in those good old days – oh how I miss them… Believe it or not – it took at least four strong men and women to pick up all the loot that we took in each Sunday Morning! Some Sundays were so good it took six people to pick up all the cash.
Now I have to check the mail box for one check each month. It isn’t quite the same. But with your company I can expect at least a few hundred checks per day – right? And if all goes well I will be rolling in the cash soon.
AND your email stated that “Benefits, including medical, dental insurance, and transportation compensation are also available to those who qualify.” Oh do I ever qualify!
I especially want to thank you and my lucky stars for being chosen for this potentially, wonderful task of representing the EWEA.

Dear Mr. Todd Richardson
I received your email and invitation this morning early. I am replying to the excellent opportunity that your company has extended to people like myself. I believe that I do qualify for the position that you have outlined in your description the task with the EWEA.
(I have included the original email at the end of this letter so you will know which email I am referring to.)
I am making this reply by email first to demonstrate my eagerness to get involved IMMEDIATELY. I will be sending the important personal contact mail via snail mail in that I do not trust placing this kind of information in an electronic form that may go to some one else other than your company.
There are some concerns right off the bat that I need to address here before I go further. But please note because I have concerns it doesn’t mean that I am not interested. I want the JOB!
Concern One -
When I Googled your name and company I found the following. You are a Lawyer that works as Vice President, Strategic Human Resources and Risk Management. But you are part of the Exact Target Company which does considerable work with email. In fact the description offered on the Exact Target Web Site states, “On Demand email marketing and one to one digital communication platform”. It does not list you as part of the EWEA.
Can you explain that for me? I have had a problem trusting Lawyers over my 66 years of living. It has come quite easily this mistrust in that I do volunteer work inside of Prisons – in fact I am going to be in Prison for a few hours today. And every one of the men in prison were represented by a Lawyer before they went there – yet they were still found guilty and the Lawyer walked away with a bundle of cash that he was paid for doing nothing.
Concern Two –
I am NOT A LAWYER and I cannot justify collecting money for doing nothing without that qualification behind my name. I had looked at getting one from the Internet site dealing with Granting Degrees etc. An old friend of mine, that was a car salesman, is now an Ordained Minister after he looked into getting the qualification from that site. He never had to study one book – just paid the money!!! No kidding!
If I sit on my duff and wait for the mailman to bring me the collection checks that will be sent to me I really am acting as a Lawyer – am I not? And without the proper qualifications and necessary degrees – would I not get in trouble?
Concern Three –
If you get the people that are owing your company money to send there money to me directly as your collection agent…. Will they trust me? I can see that I need some forms and letters with letter head printed on it. I will need these for the Bank that I am setting up the account with. The pretty teller told me that at my Bank.
I would also like to have some Business Cards printed with my new Title on it… and if I can afford the Internet degree I will include that. This will impress my Coffee Clan that I meet with each morning. These guys are sharp. I don’t want them to be saying that this is just a scam. With a proper and beautiful Business Card they will know that this is real.
Concern Four –
The EWEA is a company that is dealing with renewable energy. It deals with Wind and Water and Waves and a whole lot of interesting things all over Europe. I have only been to London for about 6 hours one day on my way to Africa. They made me stay in the airport for that time. I heard some people speaking English with a British accent. One of them was a very angry security guard that yelled at me when I took a photo of the funny telephone booth near the Immigration entrance.
I am qualified as some one that knows something about Wind and Water and Waves. I have been a minister in a church for 35 years and have preached some Long Sermons. Many people thought that I was full of hot air – at least that is what they told me. I have also Baptized People in Water that often makes Waves. And the things I said in those sermons really caused Waves in the community. My friends told me that many other folk used to talk about me after church in ways that were not very nice – definitely I caused waves!
Will all that I did as a Minister in church be enough Hot Air to fill the requirements that EWEA might have?
Needless to say for 35 years I kept the dear folk in a church building for 52 times a year and one hour and a half at a time. All the time they were there – they were not polluting. Some of the older ones occasionally passed gas – but that was pretty normal in an audience of that kind.
Finally Todd… I am more than excited and will work very well within your company organization. I have been a little short on cash since leaving the full time work at the church. This retirement mode and unemployed mode doesn’t exactly match my style of living as a minister and the impression that I used to leave on everyone.
Back in those good old days – oh how I miss them… Believe it or not – it took at least four strong men and women to pick up all the loot that we took in each Sunday Morning! Some Sundays were so good it took six people to pick up all the cash.
Now I have to check the mail box for one check each month. It isn’t quite the same. But with your company I can expect at least a few hundred checks per day – right? And if all goes well I will be rolling in the cash soon.
AND your email stated that “Benefits, including medical, dental insurance, and transportation compensation are also available to those who qualify.” Oh do I ever qualify!

Stop the world! We have the answer to all major problems that our local coffee crowd is facing. Really!
We know that Nortel Pensions were and maybe are still in trouble, In Israel there are still problems, in Iran the same, and Afghanistan is a mess… the there is trouble almost every where. Our Government and all its elected members still oppose everything that anyone does… and it is a wonder that they get anything done at all!
But locally it is not so. We have the answer to what most of us face.
Before I give away a secret this great let me give you some back ground.
A group of folk that range from early retirement through to many years retired but very active, meet each morning at the Gym. Their goal is to walk, run, push up, push down, stretch and be stretched until they puff up to a coffee table around 8 AM.
They started their exercise routine any where from 6:30 AM to 7:00 AM.
Now here is the problem. The weigh scale that is available is not appearing to work correctly. Something is wrong with the calibration. Goodness gracious… it doesn’t show that anyone has lost weight – at all!
After a lengthy discussion it was reported that when one man climbed on to the scale the scale grunted, sputtered and then said out loud that, “This scale only allows one person at a time for a weigh-in!”
The man that reported that was thoroughly frustrated, “I was the only one that was standing there! Sheesh!”
Another volunteered an answer that all around the table heartily agreed to. “I weigh more now after these weeks of exercise because of the muscle mass that I have gained. Muscle weighs more than fat.”
Some one then asked him how much he weighed when he was married a number of years ago…
He said, “I think it was around 175 pounds.”
We all looked at him a snickered, thinking to ourselves, “Your wife got a bargain… She married two men, not just one!”
Yes the world is turning and is filled with problems of all kinds. But the early morning Coffee Clan has an answer to almost everything.
The best part is the camaraderie around the table. We meet together as friends.
So if you are in need of an exercise program, maybe some weight loss, and definitely a good work out… join us at the Wellness Centre on Breally Drive, just south of Lansdowne Street.
Of if you just need some great fellowship and a hearty laugh you can join us for the Coffee Clan – ooops I should say that it is the “Wisdom Club” as some one generously named them.
Remember it is the muscle you have gained – not the fat.

Attracters – I have had more than a few
Okay, Okay… I need to balance what I say. I know it comes out wrong sometimes… at least to some who feel that perhaps I have lost it with “Distracters” in my life. Sorry that is not true. (Referring to yesterday’s posting about “Distracters”.)
As I reflected yesterday on the 6 folk that tended to Distract the whole church – I can’t forget the wonderful things and the wonderful people that flooded my life over the last 10 years of my working career. They are almost too many to write about. If I did there would be so many chapters that it would be more than just one book… in fact it would be volumes upon volumes.
With the thought that Distracters are kind of like slivers that you get in a finger or toe causing the limb to not work so good. By plucking it out simply frees that limb to do better than ever before.
In order to really look at the whole and catch the magic moments that took place I have a simple method to looking back. I call it the “What if Test” Or “WIT”.
As I applied it to the last 10 years and actually the whole of the 35 years as a minister and the 10 years prior to that in the business world I am blown away I have come to see and remember better the people in my life. WIT asks what if so and so had not come into my life?
On Friday I walked through the Transition House on Clonsilla in Peterborough. I had the wonderful task of sharing the story of the home for ex-offenders with a Government CSC official. The person was more than impressed with what has taken place and with the men that we met together.
As we shared together I told her of the time that Dan Haley walked into to my life (actually into my office), slumped down on the couch and shared his extreme frustration with me. I told the story how he was ready to ‘kill’ or do great damage to a business man in Peterborough that had attended the same church as his family. While Dan had been working to help men coming from prison and getting settled in the community, the Christian man in his former church, had molested his son – right under his wife and his nose.
The other church leadership refused to help Dan and his family. The man was charged and convicted, given a very light sentence and lived easily in the community – still attending church.
Dan and his family stopped attending church – until that day he walked into my office.
Fast forward to now. Dan’s life and ministry has flourished. Today along with the Transition House and its work with men coming from prison – Dan has about 100 volunteers in our community.
See I told you that the story is almost too long to tell. The above paragraphs sum up 10 years of Dan and I working together.
Then there is ….
As I look back over the years, either in Peterborough or in all the other areas that we have served in, the young leaders stand out. They came to me as young men and women, sometimes even children. And today they are amazing leaders all over the world.
I think of Jamie that is now the Minister in a Brampton church. Recently he told me that the church has grown by 1000 people since he has taken the leadership. Jamie came into my life as a 12 year old. His wife came into my life as an Intern when we lived in Hong Kong, not knowing what might happen in her life in the years to come – unsure.
I think of John who was about 7 years old when he came into my life. He was a complete rascal and full of mischief. Now he is a Pastor and a very capable executive member of a huge district in Canada.
I think of Scott who is now a leader in the Peterborough area. He came into my life as very needy young boy in Oakville. He hated everyone and was angry with his world. His single mother tried hard to look after her kids… but Scott pushed her to the wall – the same way that he nearly drove my fellow Boy’s club leaders crazy. Scott is amazing and leads a large outreach of over 300 people.
I need to mention another Scott, who is now serving as a teacher in Korea. He loved working with the Youth. He loved teaching and sharing his ideas. Now he is doing that with the next generation of Korean Leadership coming up. When he came into my life he had experienced a confusing family up bringing and didn’t really have a father. I not only hired him but also adopted him.
Next is Mike. I talked to Mike the other day. He is now an amazing leader affecting and influencing a large part of Northern Ontario with his work. He referred back to what he did with me as one of my assistants. He talked about how he had picked up the graces to work with the Distracters in his life. He said, “I remember how you dealt with that problem and thought to myself maybe I can too. Thank you!”
I adopted Mike too and share him with his own parents.
Yesterday I met with Tracy that had come to me as an assistant as well. She now has two kids and a wonderful husband. They are doing very well.
Then there is “G” who entered my life shortly after I came home from Hong Kong. We had shared all the creative ways to help people in the community. I told him how we had used all the creative things that we do such as wood carving, tatting, and quilt making to help people living in the squalid conditions of slums in South East Asia.
I read an email from “G” this morning early. He and his family now live in China and are helping the very poor of Northern China and the people that cross over to China from North Korea. They are using a creative way through music and another way that I can’t mention here to help people. They distribute food such as rice and hand cranking lights – where no batteries are available.
“G” is amazing to say the least – very thankful for our short times together.
What about Joy? She came to Hong Kong to work with me between 1980 and 1985. She was only there about two weeks. She listened to everything I said intently. She was quiet and kind of stood off to the side – but participated in all that we did.
Today Joy is an International Speaker that works all over Africa. Thousands upon thousands of future African leaders from many different countries make their way into her sessions. Joy is not so quiet anymore she is dynamic and a motivator as a speaker. And she is a perfect example to woman that had found herself and life work by helping others.
She contacted me lately and told me of a letter that she had from me. I had written it to her when she was in Hong Kong. It was given to her as Thank You Note when she was getting on to the airplane to fly back to Canada. I had added words of encouragement to this shy young lady. She said, “Murray I still have the note that you wrote to me. I read it again the other day. All that you said in the note has come true.”
Wow. I can’t remember the note, but I can remember her smile as she received it.
Then there is Sherri, Elizabeth, Rachel, Louise, Mary-lynn, Jason, George, Heather, John, Jake, Peter, Liz, Lucy, Abe, Sheldon, Shawn, and about 1000 other young folk that walked into my life… left a deep impression on me… and perhaps me on them… and today are doing amazing things around the world. And this list no where nearly covers the ones that call and write now.
There have been seniors that have been great. But most are gone now. And that is why the youth have so deeply impressed me. They don’t die nearly so soon but rather go on to do stunning things with there lives – and I get to see it or hear about it!!!!
There have been Distracters for sure. But the Attracters are far greater in number… and have made it all worthwhile.
Sheesh I have a warm glow all around my body as I write this.
I gotta go… gotta run. I have group of Teenagers to meet this AM. I can’t wait!!!!

Distracters – Stephen Harper and I have had them
I learned a lesson in leadership a long time ago. It was valuable to say the least. You might need it – I hope you read on – especially if you are a Government Leader in Canada – and your name happens to be Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
For myself it has happened a number of times. It is usually the “distracters” that situate themselves around me that bring this valuable lesson to me. I was not always aware of them until it was too late. I did not know their message until after it was delivered – then it was too late.
Some will know that I have served a number of years as a Minister in churches and leadership positions across Canada and some parts of the World out there. And in that Leadership role you do not always have every one following you nor do all the people love you. Instead of naming them “enemies” – I call them “distracters”. Their purpose is not the same as yours. In fact if they were ever caught and enough evidence was drawn in… they are absolutely against what you are, what you do, and the fact that you are even still alive.
Now you may gasp at the fact that within good Christian Communities there are people that can Distract that well… or could be classified as enemies…. Well it is true.
The simple fact that they exist is kind of a “job security” for a Pastor. And if you don’t remember… the word Pastor in Spanish is Shepherd… and Shepherds guard their sheep – protecting them from Distracters.
I will point to one Distracter in Peterborough that came into my life in 1998. For some reason he was easily infected by attitudes. Notice I didn’t say effected or affected. It was infected. He easily took in the disease that others offered.
The key moment of realization happened in a Church Board meeting about 4 months into my new stint as Pastor. The agenda was on the table in front of the folk sitting in the Board. It was going to be a fairly light meeting and I was excited to have the group that was working with me.
We sailed through the meeting and were approaching the adjournment when it happened. It came completely out of the left field and hit me like a Ton of Bricks.
One dear brother carefully began his comment/question with well chosen words. “Pastor, I don’t know if you are aware of the rumour that is been circulating through the church? It is being said that you have been teaching the Youth from the Satanic Bible… and I wasn’t sure what to say to the person that told me that???”
Before I could respond and in my total shock to such a statement, another Board Member responded, “I have heard that too from about three very different people. I didn’t know what to say either.” Others in the room had heard it as well.
So the Board Meeting that we had sailed through was not over. For two more hours we went over and over the very silly statement – but the very damaging statement that was circulating like wild fire in our church.
For non church people this will look like a really big non issue for people that you have nothing to do with. But for a Church Person this is something that is terrible. How could a MINISTER in a CHURCH teach from the Enemy’s book!!!!? God help us… what has this man done!!???
Yep these were the thoughts of many dear folks that believed Brother Babble and Sister Squabble… they were married to each other.
Now to help you understand how wild this statement was to everyone in attendance… it was equivalent to telling us that the Fire Chief was playing with matches in the Fire Hall… and teaching the Teenagers how to burn it down!
You see the Pastor of a Christian church is not to teach from a Satanic Bible. But making that statement was tantamount to a heresy charge. I could have been burned at a stake in the old days with even a small suggestion that this “might have happened”. The desire for purity in the Body of the Church will do almost anything to keep it clean… including the burning and destruction of people deemed UnHoly!
A Pastor with that kind of label is as good as dead. I knew it. This was terrible and as it was questioned in that Board Meeting I nearly died.
At that point there was no way to trace it back to a source – or even begin to imagine why it was started.
I had spoken to the Youth Group one night about the power or control that the Enemy has over you if you are not careful. I shared a story or two that demonstrated how dangerous the Enemy can be… and in the meeting were two Youth that had been deeply involved in Satanic Worship.
Linking that all together and catching only some of the account, mixed together with a few nasty Adults that had made it known they were out to get the Pastor and have him removed from the church… and you have a problem.
I had entered the Church leadership role with a 97% confidence vote. Now 4 months later I was being grilled by people that were supporters but didn’t understand how bad this was. They were floored by the anger that had already surfaced. Now the new Pastor was faltering at about a 51% vote… or less… with all the questions generated by the Distracters.
Mr. Nasty had left the church in a big huff at the 3 month mark… with him went Ornery and Feisty along with Miserable – 4 people that had the power and the ability to infect others. Mr. Nasty had contacted Brother Babble and Sister Squabble and told them the basic story. B&S then bolted with it. Within days they had told 90% of the congregants what a rotten Pastor they had.
We didn’t know all that in the first very long Board Meeting dealing with this statement. It never came out until about three Board Meetings later when the truth was revealed about Mr. Nasty, Brother Babble and Sister Squabble together with Ornery and Feisty along with Miserable.
Was it over at the 7th Board Meeting? Nope. The same stupid rumour was still circulating 10 years later when I retired. In fact it was still there one year later just before Brother Babble died.
Distracters are there for one reason… to Distract whoever will listen.
I stated at the beginning of this piece that our Prime Minister Stephen Harper needed to hear this. Maybe he will or maybe he won’t. I don’t know.
This week one of his Distracters surfaced again asking for clarification of the Prime Ministers stand on his stand on Abortion and the women’s health issues in the developing world.
Now his Distracter, Michael Ignatieff, never used the word Abortion, but the Newspapers easily interpreted his words. Newspaper headlines blared the raw fact of Doubt for the Religious Freak of a Prime Minister and his weird followers….
Now no one ever said that… or those words… but the feeling was there.
The Distracter has worked well again. And for days to come the opposition can ride the rails on this one. They have an audience – and that is all that they really want.
In Canada we do abortions. We have fought over this fact and tried hard to settle how we deal with this – whether we are against it or for it. It is an unsettling issues when it rears it head again.
Michael Ignatieff, grabbed it by the hair and dragged it up again. Thanks Mikey… good job. In my mind you’re right up there with the best of the Mr. Nasty, Brother Babble and Sister Squabble together with Ornery and Feisty along with Miserable.
I almost believed in what you were saying… but now I simply avoid you. You are a Distracter that has one thing in mind – YOU!
I think that I am like a lot of other Canadians. We are tired of self serving and very stupid leaders that keep trying to be the best Distracter ever!
Come on – get your act together!
